BPSC Assistant Professor Syllabus: What to Study by Post

The BPSC Assistant Professor syllabus is not a single document. The Bihar Public Service Commission recruits Assistant Professors for state medical colleges, Ayurvedic and homoeopathic colleges, and government engineering colleges, and each department follows its own selection method. Medical and AYUSH posts have recently been filled through marks-based merit and an interview, with no written exam. Engineering posts have used a written objective exam in the subject of the post, followed by an interview.

This page explains what you actually need to study for each type of post. BPSC names the stages in its advertisements but has not published a common, topic-wise Assistant Professor syllabus that we could verify. The topic lists below are built from the subject of each post, the level expected of a postgraduate teacher, and the way recent selections were run. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.

Key Points to Know Before You Start

  • One advertisement, one subject: BPSC issues a separate advertisement number for each subject or speciality. Your syllabus is the subject of your own advertisement.

  • No common general studies paper: Recent Assistant Professor cycles have not used a general studies or Bihar GK paper. Do not spend early weeks on general competitive exam topics.

  • Rules change with each notice: The 2025 medical college advertisements (Advt. Nos. 04/2025 to 28/2025) were withdrawn in October 2026, and fresh advertisements are awaited. The new notice may change the selection method, so read it in full when it is released.

  • Do not confuse with BSUSC: Many pages show a written paper based on the UGC NET syllabus. That relates to university Assistant Professor recruitment by the Bihar State University Service Commission, not to BPSC posts.

Older pages may still show a common BPSC Assistant Professor written syllabus, so follow the official advertisement for your subject.

Engineering College Posts: Written Exam Syllabus

For the 2022 Computer Science and Engineering advertisement (208 posts), BPSC held a two-hour written objective exam on 26 May 2023. The exam was in the subject of the post. The checklist below uses Computer Science and Engineering as the worked example, because it is the most recent engineering cycle with a written exam. For other branches, build the same kind of list from the core subjects of your degree.

Computer Science and Engineering: working checklist

High-weight areas in a subject paper of this kind are usually the ones that run through the whole degree: data structures, algorithms, operating systems and databases. Begin there, then add theory of computation and architecture, which need more practice to answer quickly.

Using previous papers for your branch

BPSC released provisional and final answer keys after the May 2023 Computer Science and Engineering written exam. Use past papers and keys from BPSC and similar state commission recruitments in your branch to judge the depth of questions. Mark the topics that appear often and move them up your study order. This turns the working checklist above into a plan that fits the real paper.

Applied science posts in engineering colleges

BPSC also recruits Assistant Professors in applied subjects such as Physics for government engineering colleges (for example Advt. No. 63/2020). For these posts, prepare the postgraduate syllabus of the subject, with extra attention to topics taught to first-year engineering students. Check your advertisement to see whether a written exam applies to your subject.

Subject

Core areas to revise

Engineering-relevant focus

Physics

Classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetic theory, thermodynamics and statistical physics, solid state, optics, electronics

Lasers, fibre optics, semiconductors, wave optics

Chemistry

Physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry

Water treatment, corrosion, polymers, fuels

Mathematics

Real and complex analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, numerical methods, probability and statistics

Transforms, vector calculus, numerical methods

Treat these lists as a guide. The exact scope for your branch is set by your advertisement, and the level is that of a postgraduate in the subject.

Medical College Posts: What the Interview Covers

Recent medical college advertisements had no written exam. Most of your score came from your academic record, PG and super-speciality qualifications, experience and publications. The interview carried a small share of marks (6 marks in recent reports), but in a tight merit list those marks can decide the outcome.

There is no official interview syllabus. Based on how teaching posts are assessed, prepare these areas in your speciality:

  • Core speciality knowledge: Common and important conditions, investigations and management in your subject, at the level you would teach to MBBS students.

  • Recent guidelines: National programmes, updated clinical guidelines and recent changes relevant to your subject.

  • Medical education: Competency-based medical education, teaching-learning methods, assessment methods, and how you would plan a lecture or practical.

  • Research: Study designs, basic biostatistics and ethics, and a clear account of your own publications and thesis.

  • Hospital and departmental work: Patient safety, infection control, record keeping and your role in departmental duties.

Be ready to explain every entry in your application form. Experience periods, publications and qualifications that earn marks are also likely topics of questions.

Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic College Posts: What to Prepare

The 2025 Ayurveda (88 posts) and Homoeopathy (13 posts) advertisements were reported as merit-based with an interview and no written exam. Your preparation therefore centres on the subject of your advertisement and on your teaching and research profile.

How to Cover the Syllabus: A Phased Plan

For engineering posts with a written exam

  1. Weeks 1 to 6, core concepts: Cover data structures, algorithms, operating systems and databases (or the core subjects of your branch). Make short notes for each topic.

  2. Weeks 4 to 8, topic tests: Begin 20 to 30 question topic-wise tests as each subject is completed.

  3. Weeks 7 to 10, remaining subjects: Add theory-heavy and numerical subjects and revise weak topics from your test results.

  4. Final phase, full-length practice: Take timed two-hour practice papers, analyse them the same day, and revise from an error log.

For timed subject practice, you can attempt online tests on Testkart and use the topic-wise analysis to plan revision. Pair them with previous year questions in your subject to judge the real level.

For medical and AYUSH posts

  1. Now, document readiness: Collect mark sheets, degrees, experience letters, registration and publication proofs, so you can apply as soon as the fresh advertisement opens.

  2. Four to six weeks before interview, subject revision: Revise core topics and recent guidelines in your speciality.

  3. Two to three weeks before interview, teaching and research: Prepare short explanations of key topics and summaries of your publications.

  4. Final week, mock interviews: Practise with seniors and refine answers on your experience and career plans.

Short subject quizzes on Testkart can also help medical and AYUSH candidates revise core topics in the weeks before the interview.
