BPSC Assistant Professor Exam Pattern and Selection Process
The BPSC Assistant Professor exam pattern is different for each type of post. The Bihar Public Service Commission does not run one common Assistant Professor exam. It issues subject-wise advertisements on behalf of state departments, and each advertisement states its own selection method. For medical college and AYUSH college posts, recent selections used marks-based merit and an interview, with no written exam. For engineering college posts, BPSC has used a written objective exam followed by document verification and an interview.
This page sets out each selection method, how marks are awarded where this has been reported, and how a final merit list is built. It also explains what each pattern means for your preparation. Note that the 2025 medical college advertisements (Advt. Nos. 04/2025 to 28/2025) were withdrawn in October 2026, and the fresh advertisements may change the scheme. Marks below are as reported for recent cycles and are indicative.

Key Changes to Know
Medical college cycle withdrawn: BPSC withdrew Advt. Nos. 04/2025 to 28/2025 (1,711 posts) in October 2026 after the Health Department withdrew its requisition. Fresh advertisements are being prepared, and their selection scheme has not been published yet.
An earlier medical cycle was also stopped: Advt. Nos. 34/2024 to 56/2024 (1,339 posts) were postponed in July 2024, shortly after release.
Different pages, different numbers: Secondary sources report the 2025 medical marks scheme with conflicting slabs and totals. We give the heads that most reports agree on and flag the rest.
University pattern is not BPSC pattern: A 175-mark written test plus 25-mark interview often shown online relates to university Assistant Professor recruitment by the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC), not to BPSC posts.
Older pages may still show a single written exam pattern for BPSC Assistant Professor, so follow the official advertisement for your subject.
Medical College Posts: Marks-Based Merit
In recent medical college advertisements, there was no written exam. BPSC awarded marks under fixed heads from your application and documents, then added interview marks. The table below lists the heads reported for the 2025 advertisements. Treat the figures as indicative until the fresh advertisement confirms them.
Head | How marks were reported to be awarded | Maximum (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
MBBS or BDS aggregate | Slab-based on percentage; 70% and above earned the top slab | 5 |
Marks in the speciality subject | Slab-based on percentage in the subject of the post | 5 |
MD, MS, MDS or equivalent PG qualification | Fixed marks for the required PG degree | 10 |
DM, MCh, PhD or DNB (super-speciality) | Fixed marks for a higher qualification in the same speciality | 10 |
Government service experience | 2 marks for each completed year | 10 |
Research publications | Reported in some summaries as 2 marks per qualifying paper in indexed journals | Not confirmed |
Interview | Assessed by the interview board | 6 |
Reports also mention deductions for failed attempts in the MBBS or BDS course and special rules for foreign degree holders. The exact slab boundaries below 65% differ between sources. Check these rules in the fresh advertisement, because they can shift your score by several marks.
Why the interview still matters
The interview is only a small part of the total. But most candidates for a speciality share the same PG marks, and many have similar experience. In that situation, a 2 to 3 mark difference in the interview can move you above or below the last selected candidate.
Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic College Posts
Ayurveda (2025 advertisements, 88 posts)
The 2025 Ayurveda advertisements for Government Ayurvedic Colleges at Patna and Begusarai were reported as having no written or computer-based exam. The marks heads below come from secondary reports, which also show inconsistent totals, so treat them as indicative.
Head | Basis reported | Maximum (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
BAMS marks | Slab-based on BAMS percentage | 20 |
PG degree in Ayurveda | MD or MS (Ayurveda) in the subject | 10 |
Work experience | 2 marks per year in government institutions | 10 |
Research publications | 2 marks per paper as main author in recognised journals | 4 |
Interview | Assessed by the interview board | 6 |
Total | As reported | 50 |
Homoeopathy (2025 advertisement, 13 posts)
For the 13 posts at the government homoeopathic medical college in Muzaffarpur, reports said there would be no written exam. Merit was to be based on academic scores, work experience, research papers and interview performance. The marks for each head were not available in the sources we could check, so read the advertisement for the exact scheme.
Engineering College Posts: Written Exam and Interview
Engineering college posts are where BPSC has used a written exam. The most recent example is the Computer Science and Engineering cycle for 208 posts (71 reserved for women) in government engineering colleges.
Stage | Details reported for the Computer Science and Engineering cycle |
|---|---|
Written exam | Written (objective) competitive examination on 26 May 2023, 12 noon to 2 pm |
Candidates | 1,093 appeared in the written exam |
Document verification | 504 candidates qualified; verification held from 6 to 9 November 2023 |
Interview | 27 to 30 November 2023 |
The number of questions, marks per question, negative marking and the weightage between the written exam and interview were not available in the sources we could verify. These are set out in each advertisement and admit card notice. If your branch is advertised, read those sections first, because negative marking changes how much you should guess.
Answer key and objections
BPSC published a provisional answer key after the May 2023 written exam and later a final answer key. Use the objection window if you are confident a key is wrong, because one or two marks can change the document verification list.
Interview and Document Verification
All recent BPSC Assistant Professor selections end with document verification and an interview. For medical college posts in 2025, document verification for 13 of the advertisements was held from 7 to 24 July 2025, before the cycle was later withdrawn.
Document verification: Original degrees, mark sheets, experience certificates with appointment and joining records, registration, caste and residence certificates, and publication proofs are checked against what you entered online.
Interview: A board assesses subject knowledge, teaching ability, research understanding and suitability for a faculty role.
Mismatch risk: Marks claimed in the form but not supported by documents are not counted, and a false claim can lead to rejection.
How the Final Merit List Is Prepared
For merit-based posts, the final score is the total of all heads plus the interview. Category-wise merit lists are then drawn up against the vacancies for each category. Tie-break rules are stated in each advertisement.
Illustrative example (medical college post)
The example below uses the indicative heads above. It is illustrative only and not an official calculation.
Head | Candidate profile | Marks (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
MBBS aggregate | 72% | 5 |
Speciality subject marks | 66% | 4 |
MD in the subject | Held | 10 |
Super-speciality | Not held | 0 |
Government experience | 3 completed years | 6 |
Interview | Scored 4 out of 6 | 4 |
Total | Excluding publications | 29 |
One more completed year of government experience would add 2 marks, the same as a strong interview over an average one. This is why experience planning matters as much as interview preparation.
Comparing the Selection Methods
The three types of post reward different strengths. Use this comparison to decide where your preparation time goes.
Factor | Medical college | AYUSH college | Engineering college |
|---|---|---|---|
Weight of academic record | High: MBBS or BDS and speciality marks feed slabs | High: BAMS or BHMS marks carry the largest single head as reported for Ayurveda | Eligibility only, unless the advertisement awards marks |
Weight of experience | Up to 10 marks reported | Up to 10 marks reported for Ayurveda | As stated in the advertisement |
Weight of research | Reported in some versions; not confirmed | Up to 4 marks reported for Ayurveda | As stated in the advertisement |
Written exam | None in recent cycles | None as reported for 2025 | Objective screening used |
Interview | 6 marks reported | 6 marks reported for Ayurveda | After document verification |
What you can still improve | Experience years, publications, interview | Experience years, publications, interview | Subject knowledge, speed, accuracy, interview |
If you are a medical or AYUSH candidate, the fresh advertisement may revise these heads. Recalculate your expected score as soon as it is out, using the exact slabs it publishes.
What the Pattern Means for You
Most marks are earned before you apply: In medical and AYUSH posts, degrees and experience decide the bulk of your score. Make sure every eligible year of experience is properly documented.
Read the experience clause closely: Reported schemes give marks for government service experience. Private experience may count for eligibility but not for marks.
Publications can be a tie-breaker: Where publication marks apply, one or two indexed papers can lift you above candidates with an identical academic record.
Engineering candidates face a real screening: With 504 of 1,093 candidates moving forward in the last Computer Science and Engineering cycle, less than half cleared the written stage. Subject preparation is essential.
Exam-Day and Interview-Day Strategy
For the written exam
First pass for sure answers: Answer all questions you know in the first 60 to 70 minutes.
Second pass for working questions: Return to numericals and longer questions with the time left.
Guess with the rule in mind: Guess only if the advertisement shows no negative marking, or if you can eliminate at least two options.
For timed practice in a two-hour objective format, you can attempt subject-wise online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see where you lose time. Explore BPSC Assistant Professor mock tests and practice sets to build a routine.
For the interview
Carry a clean document set: Arrange originals and copies in the order the notice lists them.
Prepare a short introduction: Cover qualifications, experience, research and why you want to teach in a state college.
Answer within your strength: If a question is outside your area, say so briefly and steer to a related topic you know.
Subject quizzes and study notes on Testkart can help you revise quickly in the days before the interview.
