CBSE Class 11 Passing Marks and Cut-off 2026-27: Promotion Rules

There is no national CBSE Class 11 cut-off. Class 11 is not a board exam, CBSE publishes no merit list or rank, and no all-India score decides who moves to Class 12. When students and parents search for a Class 11 cut-off, they usually mean one of two things: the passing marks needed for promotion to Class 12, or the Class 10 marks a school asks for before it allots Science, Commerce or Humanities.

This page explains both. It sets out CBSE's 33% pass rule for Class 11, how practicals and additional subjects affect promotion, what happens if you fail a subject, and how schools set their stream-allotment marks. Use the stream figures as indicative examples only, because each school sets its own.

Passing marks for CBSE Class 11

Rule

Requirement

Pass mark per subject

33%

Subjects with practicals

33% in theory and 33% in practical separately, plus 33% overall

Subjects to pass

All main subjects

Grade for 32 or below

E (Essential Repeat)

Attendance

75% to be eligible for exams

CBSE's examination bye-laws state that to pass Class XI a candidate must obtain 33% marks in all subjects. In a 2023 case, the Delhi High Court held that this bye-law applies to Class XI and that a conflicting school-system code cannot override it.

Promotion to Class 12

  1. Pass all five main subjects: Score at least 33% in each, with theory and practical cleared separately where both exist.

  2. Use the additional subject if you have one: If you fail a main elective but pass your sixth additional elective, the additional subject can replace it, provided Hindi or English remains among your main five.

  3. Clear the school re-test: Most schools hold a supplementary or compartment exam for students who fail one or two subjects. The format and date are set by the school.

  4. Essential Repeat: A student who still does not meet the pass criteria is declared Essential Repeat and repeats Class 11.

Promotion is decided by your school within these CBSE rules. Ask your school for its written promotion policy at the start of the year.

Stream allotment marks set by schools

CBSE does not set any minimum marks for choosing Science, Commerce or Humanities. Schools set their own criteria based on seats, teachers and past results, usually using Class 10 board marks and sometimes Class 9 or pre-board marks.

Stream

Indicative school criteria seen in 2026-27 circulars

Science (PCM)

About 75% to 90% in Mathematics and Science

Science (PCB)

About 75% to 90% in Science

Commerce with Mathematics

About 70% to 80% in Mathematics, often with an aggregate threshold

Commerce without Mathematics

Aggregate threshold, often around 80% in more selective schools

Humanities

Aggregate or English threshold, often around 70%

These ranges come from a small sample of published 2026-27 school admission circulars. They are not official CBSE figures and they vary widely, so treat them as a benchmark only and check your own school's circular.

What affects a school's stream cut-off

  • Number of sections: A school with one Science section will set a higher bar than one with three.

  • Demand that year: More applicants for PCM or PCB pushes the threshold up.

  • Internal versus external students: Many schools give priority to their own Class 10 students and set separate criteria for outsiders.

  • Subject-specific marks: Mathematics and Science marks often matter more than the aggregate for Science seats.

How to set your target

  • Aim well above 33%: A bare pass leaves no buffer. Target at least 60% in every subject so a weak paper does not put promotion at risk.

  • Watch practical and theory separately: A high theory score does not cover a failed practical.

  • Track your weakest subject: Promotion depends on your lowest subject, not your average.

  • Use timed papers: Practise in the board-style format and compare your scores across units.
