CBSE Class 11 Eligibility 2026-27: Admission, Subjects and Registration
CBSE Class 11 eligibility is about admission, not about an entrance exam. Any student who has passed Class 10 from CBSE, or from a board CBSE recognises as equivalent, can seek admission to Class 11 in a CBSE-affiliated school. What varies is the stream and subject combination you get, which depends on CBSE's subject rules and on your school's own criteria.
This page covers the CBSE admission rules for Class 11, the documents schools ask for, the subject and stream restrictions in the 2026-27 scheme of studies, the Mathematics Standard and Basic question, and how Class XI registration with CBSE works. Requirements set by individual schools, such as minimum marks for Science, are explained separately and differ from school to school.

Educational qualification
CBSE Class 10 pass: Students who passed the CBSE Class 10 exam are eligible for Class 11 admission in any CBSE school, subject to seats and school criteria.
Other boards: Students who passed Class 10 from another board are eligible if CBSE recognises that exam as equivalent to its Secondary School Examination.
Foreign schools: Students coming from a school abroad need an eligibility certificate from CBSE, issued after the course is found equivalent.
Unrecognised institutions: Certificates from an institution not recognised by CBSE, another recognised board or a State or UT government are not accepted for admission.
Admission with the 2026 Class 10 results
In 2026, CBSE held two Class 10 board exams, and the second exam result was reported as declared on 18 July 2026. Published reports said the first-exam mark sheet could be used for provisional Class 11 admission, with records updated after the second result. Confirm with your school how it handled admission for students who took the second exam.
Documents required

Transfer certificate or school leaving certificate | Signed by the head of the last school; required before your name enters the admission register |
Class 10 mark sheet or passing certificate | Proof that you passed the qualifying exam |

Eligibility certificate | Only for students from foreign or non-equivalent boards |

Age limit
CBSE does not prescribe its own age limit for Class 11. Its bye-laws say a student must meet the minimum and maximum age set by the State or UT government where the school is located. Most students enter Class 11 at 15 or 16, but check your state's rule if you are older or younger than usual.
Subject rules in the 2026-27 scheme of studies
Five subjects minimum: Hindi or English is compulsory as one subject, and one of your two languages must be Hindi or English.
Optional sixth subject: You can add one more language or elective as an additional subject.
Choose for two years: Class XI and XII are a composite course, so pick subjects you plan to continue in Class 12.
Blocked pairs: Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241) cannot be taken together. Business Studies (054) and Business Administration (833) cannot be taken together. Only one of Computer Science (083), Informatics Practices (065) and Information Technology (802) is allowed.
Same language once: You cannot take the same language at both Core and Elective levels.
Main subjects order: The first five subjects in the order entered during registration count as your main subjects.

Stream eligibility and school criteria
CBSE does not define Science, Commerce and Humanities as fixed streams, and it does not set minimum marks for any of them. Schools form streams from CBSE's subject list and set their own admission criteria. Typical inputs are:
Class 10 aggregate: An overall percentage threshold for each stream.
Subject marks: Higher minimums in Mathematics and Science for PCM or PCB, and sometimes in Mathematics for Commerce with Mathematics.
Seat availability: Limited sections mean schools may allot by merit or first come, first served for some electives.
Tests or interaction: Some schools hold an admission test or interview, especially for new students.
These criteria differ widely between schools and between years. Read your school's admission circular carefully.
Mathematics Standard, Basic and Applied Mathematics
CBSE norms link Mathematics (041) in Class 11 to Mathematics Standard in Class 10. Students who took Mathematics Basic were expected to choose Applied Mathematics instead. For 2025-26, CBSE extended a relaxation allowing Basic students to take Mathematics (041), provided the head of the school was satisfied with the student's aptitude.
For 2026-27: We could not find a CBSE circular confirming the relaxation for 2026-27. Ask your school whether it is allowing Basic students into Mathematics (041) this session.
Applied Mathematics: Designed for students heading to commerce or social science courses. Check the entry requirements of the college courses you plan to apply for before choosing it.
CBSE registration of Class 11 students
CBSE registers Class IX and XI students through their schools. The school collects your details, subject choices and fee, enters them on CBSE's online portal and submits them. For the 2026-27 batch, registration opened in September 2026 according to published reports; schools set their own internal deadlines before CBSE's last date.
Check your details: Name, parents' names, date of birth and subjects must be exactly right. Changes after the data is finalised are difficult.
Subjects are fixed at registration: Subject changes later in Class 11 need school and CBSE approval.
Fees: The registration fee is set by CBSE's fee schedule for the session and collected by the school. Ask your school for the current amount.
Who is not eligible
Students who have not passed Class 10: You cannot be admitted to Class 11 until you pass the qualifying exam.
Rusticated or debarred students: Students expelled or debarred from exams by any board or university cannot be admitted for that period.
Certificates from unrecognised institutions: These are not accepted as proof of passing Class 10.
Late admissions without approval: Admission after 31 August needs prior permission, except where a delayed board result caused the delay and you applied within a fortnight of it.
Full admission rules are in the CBSE admission bye-laws.
