CBSE Class 11 is the first year of the senior secondary stage for students in schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. It is not a board exam. Your school teaches the CBSE-prescribed curriculum, sets its own papers and declares the Class 11 result, while CBSE fixes the subjects, syllabus, marks split and pass rules. For the 2026-27 session, CBSE released the Classes XI and XII curriculum on 1 April 2026 under Circular Acad-14/2026.

How Class 11 works under CBSE
CBSE treats Classes XI and XII as one composite course. You choose your subjects in Class 11 and normally continue the same subjects in Class 12, where the board exam is held. That makes your Class 11 subject choice the most important academic decision of the two years.
The Class 11 year-end exam is a school exam. CBSE's curriculum says Class XI assessment should be similar to the Class XII board pattern but carried out at school level. In practice, most schools hold periodic tests, a half-yearly or mid-term exam and an annual exam, with practicals and projects marked inside the school.
CBSE sets: subjects, syllabus, unit-wise marks, practical and project components, question typology and the 33% pass rule.
Your school sets: the exam calendar, question papers, stream allotment criteria, re-test policy and the final promotion decision within CBSE rules.
CBSE registers you: as a Class XI student through the school, which links you to the Class XII board exam the following year.
Subject scheme and streams
The 2026-27 scheme of studies asks for at least five subjects. Hindi or English is compulsory, and the other subjects come from the language group, the academic electives group and the skill electives group. A sixth subject can be added as an optional additional subject.

CBSE's scheme does not define Science, Commerce or Humanities as fixed streams. Schools create these as common subject bundles based on their timetable and teachers. CBSE does block some pairs: Mathematics with Applied Mathematics, Business Studies with Business Administration, and more than one of Computer Science, Informatics Practices and Information Technology.

Admission to Class 11
You are eligible for Class 11 in a CBSE school if you have passed Class 10 from CBSE or from a board CBSE recognises as equivalent. Schools also ask for a transfer certificate, proof of passing and date-of-birth proof, and must complete admissions in Class IX and above by 31 August unless permission is granted.
Mathematics choice: CBSE norms link Mathematics (041) in Class 11 to Mathematics Standard in Class 10. CBSE allowed a relaxation for Mathematics Basic students in 2025-26 at the school head's discretion; confirm with your school whether it applies for 2026-27.
Applied Mathematics: Designed for students heading towards commerce or social science courses. It cannot be taken with Mathematics (041).
Registration: Your school registers Class XI students with CBSE online. Students do not apply to CBSE directly.

Durations marked school-set are not stated in the Class XI section of the subject document; schools usually follow the 3-hour board format.
What this means for you
Practicals are a safety net and a risk: Thirty marks are within your control, but you must clear 33% in practical separately.
Competency questions are rising: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics papers carry 20% to 30% of marks for analysing, evaluating and creating, so rote answers will not be enough.

Class 11 builds the base for Class 12 and for entrance exams. Physics mechanics, organic chemistry basics, calculus and algebra all come back in Class 12.
Passing and promotion to Class 12
Score 33% in every subject: CBSE's examination bye-laws require 33% marks in all subjects to pass Class XI.
Clear theory and practical separately: In subjects with practicals, you need 33% in theory and 33% in practical, plus 33% overall.
Use your additional subject if needed: If you fail a main elective but pass the sixth additional elective, the additional subject can replace it, provided Hindi or English stays among your main five.
Take the school re-test: Most schools hold a supplementary or re-test for students who fail one or two subjects. The format is set by the school.
Meet attendance rules: CBSE requires 75% attendance in Classes IX to XII to be eligible for exams.

How to prepare for CBSE Class 11
The jump from Class 10 to Class 11 is steep, especially in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Plan the year in three blocks.
April to September: Finish NCERT chapters as they are taught, make short notes and solve all in-text and exercise questions. Keep a practical file up to date.
October to December: Revise the half-yearly portion, add chapter tests and fix weak units before new chapters pile up.
January to annual exam: Full-syllabus revision, timed papers in the board-style format and error-log review.
