Kolhan University BA Semester 1 Exam Pattern 2026
The Kolhan University BA Semester 1 exam pattern mixes two kinds of assessment. Your Major (MJ-1) and Associated Core (AC-1) papers have an internal exam at your college plus a written end-semester exam set by the university. The other five papers are end-semester only. The last cycle, the FYUGP 1st Semester Exam 2025 for Session 2025-29, was written between 17 July 2026 and 30 July 2026.
This page gives the marks, time and question types for every Semester 1 paper. It also shows what the pattern means for your time in the exam hall and how your total is worked out. All figures come from the Kolhan University syllabus files, exam programme and internal marks notice unless a line says otherwise.

In BA, Economics, Political Science, History, Hindi, English, Philosophy, Sociology and Public Administration follow the 75 + 25 split. Geography, Psychology, Anthropology and Home Science follow the 60 + 15 + 25 split, as listed in the university's internal and practical marks notice for the 2025 exam.
Major and AC Papers: End-Semester Exam
The 75-mark end-semester paper is three hours long. The Economics syllabus file and the Political Science MDC file give this question plan for 75-mark papers.
Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Group A, Question 1 (compulsory) | Five very short questions of 1 mark each | 5 |
Group A, Questions 2 and 3 (compulsory) | Two short-answer questions of 5 marks each | 10 |
Group B | Six descriptive questions of 15 marks; answer any four | 60 |
Total | 7 questions to answer | 75 |
A question can have sub-parts, so a 15-mark question may be split into two or three smaller parts. Read the whole question before you start writing.
Major and AC Papers: Internal Exam (SIE)
The Semester Internal Examination (SIE) is held by your college. For a non-practical subject it carries 25 marks: 20 marks for a one-hour written test and 5 marks for class attendance. The written test has a Group A (five 1-mark questions and one 5-mark question) and a Group B (answer one of two 10-mark questions).
Your attendance | Attendance score (out of 5) |
|---|---|
Up to 45% | 1 |
45% to 55% | 2 |
55% to 65% | 3 |
65% to 75% | 4 |
Above 75% | 5 |
For the 2025 exam, colleges held internal, practical and viva exams between 6 August 2026 and 18 August 2026, with an external examiner. Marks were uploaded on the university portal by 22 August 2026. The notice said that a student who misses the internal exam will not get another chance, and marks cannot be changed after upload.
Practical Subjects in BA
If your Major or AC is Geography, Psychology, Anthropology or Home Science, the 100 marks are split three ways.
Theory end-semester, 60 marks: Written in the university exam hall.
Theory internal, 15 marks: A 10-mark written test plus 5 marks for attendance.
Practical, 25 marks: Held at your college with records and viva where the syllabus asks for them.
The pass rule is also split: the Economics syllabus file, for its practical papers, asks for 30 in theory (internal plus end-semester) and 10 in practical, making 40 overall. Check your own subject file for the exact rule.
MDC-1 and the Common Courses
MDC-1 (75 marks, 3 hours)
The MDC paper has no internal exam, and the pass mark is 30. The Economics and Political Science MDC files use the same Group A and Group B plan as the Major paper: five 1-mark questions, two 5-mark questions and four out of six 15-mark questions.
SEC-1, VAC-1, AEC-1 and IKS-1
SEC-1 Digital Education (75 marks): Held in a regular three-hour sitting in the 2025 exam. The university has not put its question plan on the public syllabus page, so study the previous paper for the format.
VAC-1 Understanding India (50 marks): One and a half hours, written in an answer booklet.
AEC-1 Hindi Composition (50 marks): One and a half hours, written in an answer booklet.
IKS-1 (50 marks): One and a half hours, written in an answer booklet; the exam programme states the paper is subjective.
As per the university's FYUGP course tables, the pass mark is 30 out of 75 for SEC-1 and 20 out of 50 for the 50-mark papers. IKS-1 was added after those tables were made, so treat a 20 out of 50 pass mark for it as likely but check the latest notice.
Exam Timings and Sittings
Sitting | Exam time | Reporting time |
|---|---|---|
First sitting | 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. | 9.30 a.m. |
Second sitting | 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. | 1.30 p.m. |
In the 2025 exam, Economics and Political Science MJ-1 were in the first sitting on 17 July 2026. Political Science and Economics AC-1 were in the second sitting on 18 July 2026. The common courses were held in sets by Major subject, so two friends in the same college may write Understanding India on different days.
What This Pattern Means for You
Group B decides your result: 60 of the 75 end-semester marks come from four long answers. If you prepare only short notes, you cannot pass comfortably.
Time per long answer: Give about 20 minutes to Group A, then about 35 minutes to each 15-mark answer. Keep 15 minutes to read the paper and revise.
Choice helps: You answer four of six long questions, so prepare at least five units well. Leaving two units can still work, but leaving three is risky.
Internal marks are easy marks: 25 marks per Major and AC paper are decided in your college. Regular attendance alone gives 5 of them.
Worked Example: Your Semester Total
Suppose you take Economics as Major, Political Science as AC and Home Science as MDC. Here is one possible result.
Paper | Marks scored | Pass mark | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
Economics MJ-1 (18 internal + 44 end-semester) | 62 / 100 | 40 | Pass |
Political Science AC-1 (20 internal + 38 end-semester) | 58 / 100 | 40 | Pass |
Home Science MDC-1 | 41 / 75 | 30 | Pass |
Digital Education SEC-1 | 36 / 75 | 30 | Pass |
Understanding India VAC-1 | 29 / 50 | 20 | Pass |
Hindi Composition AEC-1 | 31 / 50 | 20 | Pass |
IKS-1 | 26 / 50 | 20 (likely) | Pass |
Total | 283 / 500 | Pass |
How to Write a 15-Mark Answer
Most marks in the Major, AC and MDC papers come from long answers, so a simple structure helps. Examiners read many booklets, and a clear answer is easier to mark well.
Start with a definition: Two or three lines that define the term in the question, with the name of the thinker or economist where it fits.
Explain in points: Use four to six short headings. Under each, write two or three sentences in simple Hindi or English.
Add a diagram or example: In Economics, draw the curve. In Political Science or Understanding India, add one Indian or Jharkhand example.
End with a conclusion: Two lines that answer the question directly.
Aim for about two and a half to three pages per 15-mark answer. Writing more than that usually costs time for the next question without adding marks.
Pattern for Ex-Regular Candidates
If you did not clear a Semester 1 paper, you write it again as an ex-regular candidate with the next batch. The 2025 exam form allowed ex-regular students of Sessions 2022-26, 2023-27 and 2024-28 to appear, and their paper list followed their own first-semester record. Their papers were MJ-1, MN-1A, MDC-1, SEC-1, VAC-1 and AEC-1, without IKS-1. Read your own exam form carefully, because your papers may differ from those of a new student.
Exam-Day Rules From the Programme
Unfair means: In case of a walkout, stay-out or mass copying, there is no re-exam and zero marks are given.
Official programme only: The programme uploaded on the university website is final. The university is not responsible for newspaper misprints.
Admit card errors: Report a wrong subject to the university examination department before the exam starts.
Time Management and Practice
Seven papers in about two weeks need a calm plan. Keep the 50-mark papers for short revision gaps, and use free days before Major and AC papers for long-answer practice. Write at least two full 75-mark papers in three hours before the exam.
