Good study notes make the Kolhan University BA Semester 1 exam much easier, because you have seven papers to revise in a short exam period. Notes in your own words, in the language you will write in, help you revise a whole unit in ten minutes instead of re-reading a full book.
This page shows what to put in your notes for each FYUGP Semester 1 paper, how to organise them, a revision schedule and which sources to trust. The topics follow the university's syllabus files for Economics, Political Science, Home Science MDC-1, Hindi Composition and Understanding India.
What to Include in Your Notes, Paper by Paper
Paper | What your notes should hold |
|---|---|
Economics MJ-1 | Definitions, one labelled diagram per concept (demand, supply, indifference curve, isoquant, cost curves), the laws in two lines each and one example per law |
Political Science AC-1 | Key terms with short definitions, thinkers and their main idea, and Indian examples you can reuse in long answers |
Home Science MDC-1 | Meaning and branches of Home Science, career areas, and a short card each on ICDS, Applied Nutrition Programme and rural development schemes |
AEC-1 Hindi Composition | Rules and examples for sandhi and samas, lists of upsarg and pratyay, 50 administrative terms with English meanings, letter and application formats |
VAC-1 Understanding India | One page per unit: land and people, heritage and art (with Jharkhand art forms), knowledge traditions, economy, and freedom struggle to Panchayati Raj and PESA |
SEC-1 and IKS-1 | Notes built from the printed syllabus your college gives you and the topics asked in the 2025 paper |
How to Organise Your Notes
One notebook per paper
Keep separate notebooks for the Major and AC, and one shared notebook for the four common courses. Write the unit name at the top of each page so you can find it fast.
Short notes for long answers
For each likely 15-mark question, write a one-page skeleton: a two-line definition, five or six headings and one example or diagram. In the exam you expand each heading into two or three sentences.
Formula and diagram sheet
Economics students should keep one sheet with every diagram and formula, such as price elasticity and the cost relationships. Revise it every day in the last two weeks.
Error log
Keep the last pages of each notebook for mistakes from practice papers. Write the question, what went wrong and the correct point.
Term list for Hindi Composition
Make a two-column list of administrative terms, Hindi on one side and English on the other. Cover one side and test yourself.
Sample One-Page Note: Law of Demand
Here is how a one-page skeleton for a likely Economics question can look. Copy the shape, not the words.
Definition: Other things remaining the same, when the price of a good falls, its quantity demanded rises, and when the price rises, quantity demanded falls.
Assumptions: Income, tastes, prices of related goods and expectations do not change.
Schedule and diagram: A small table of price and quantity, and a downward-sloping demand curve with labelled axes.
Reasons: Diminishing marginal utility, income effect, substitution effect, new buyers at lower prices.
Exceptions: Giffen goods, goods of prestige, fear of future price rise.
Conclusion: Two lines on why the law matters for buyers and sellers.
With this skeleton you can write a full 15-mark answer in about 35 minutes. Make one such page for each likely long question.
Writing Notes in Hindi or English
Write notes in the language you will use in the exam. If you answer in Hindi, write Hindi notes but add the English term in brackets for key words, for example "mang (demand)". This helps when a question uses the English term, and it reduces confusion between similar terms in Economics and Political Science.
Use simple sentences. A note you understand quickly in the last week is better than a long note copied from a guide.
A Revision Schedule for Semester 1
Phase | What to do |
|---|---|
During each unit | Write rough notes in class, then a clean one-page note within the same week |
Before the internal exam | Revise Major and AC notes for the units covered so far, and write two practice answers |
Six weeks before the end-semester exam | Finish notes for all units, including MDC-1, SEC-1 and IKS-1 |
Last four weeks | Solve previous papers and add missed points to your notes |
Last week | Revise only from notes, the diagram sheet and the error log |
Night before each paper | Read the one-page skeletons for that paper, then rest |
Sources You Can Trust
The official syllabus file: Use it as the list of what to note. Anything outside it is lower priority.
Books named in the syllabus: The Economics file suggests standard microeconomics texts, and the Understanding India file suggests NCERT books for Classes 6 to 12 along with history and culture books.
College lecture notes: Your teachers also set and check the internal exam, so their emphasis matters.
Previous question papers: They show which topics need a full page and which need only a few lines.
Be careful with guide books written for the old CBCS syllabus. Check each chapter against the FYUGP unit list before you copy from it.
