LIC AAO Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topics
The LIC AAO syllabus covers reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English in the prelims, and reasoning, data analysis, general awareness and insurance awareness in the mains. Life Insurance Corporation of India names these tests in its notification but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists below are built from the official pattern and from questions asked in previous papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.
This page follows the pattern of the 2025 recruitment, the latest cycle we could verify, and we could not confirm a new notification for the next cycle. It shows what to study for each stage, which topics overlap between prelims and mains, and a phase-wise plan to cover everything in order.

Key Changes to Know
Prelims is qualifying: Its marks are not added to the final merit, so the prelims syllabus only needs to be strong enough to clear sectional minimums.
Professional Knowledge is for Specialist posts: Some pages list it in the Generalist mains. For the Generalist stream, the mains tests are reasoning, general awareness, data analysis and insurance awareness.
Descriptive paper is typed: Practise writing on a keyboard, because it is a computer-based test.
No negative marking reported: The 2025 notification was reported as having none, but confirm this when the next notification is released.
Older pages may still show previous patterns and topic lists, so follow the official notification.
Prelims Syllabus
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Ability | Puzzles and seating arrangement, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, ordering and ranking, input-output, inequalities, syllogism, alphanumeric series, statement and conclusion | Seating arrangement and puzzles |
Quantitative Aptitude | Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, percentage, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed distance time, averages, mixtures, mensuration, permutation and combination, probability, data interpretation | Simplification and number series |
English Language | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para-jumbles, fillers, vocabulary, idioms and phrases | Reading comprehension and error spotting |
Reasoning and quant carry 70 of the 100 prelims marks, and puzzles and simplification usually give the quickest marks. English has a lower sectional minimum but still needs steady practice, because a miss here can end your attempt even with strong scores elsewhere.
Mains Syllabus (Generalist)
Reasoning Ability
This section is worth 90 marks. Expect multi-step puzzles and seating arrangements, input-output, critical reasoning, word formation and coding. Reports on the 2025 mains describe three sets of puzzles as the bulk of the section.
Puzzles and arrangements: Box-based, floor-based, month-based and designation puzzles.
Verbal reasoning: Syllogism, statement-argument-conclusion and critical reasoning.
Others: Input-output, coding, direction sense and ranking.
Data Analysis and Interpretation
This section is also worth 90 marks. It tests speed with calculation as much as understanding of charts.
Data interpretation: Tables, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, caselets and mixed charts.
Arithmetic and approximation: Percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss and quantity comparison.
General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Current affairs: National and international events, awards, appointments, summits, government schemes, new laws and policies, sports, books and authors, and science and technology news.
Static GK: Indian Constitution, geography, national parks and organisations, important days, committees and reports.
Insurance and Financial Market Awareness
The topic list is not published, so build it around the subject itself.
Insurance basics: Principles such as utmost good faith, indemnity and insurable interest, plus no-claim bonus, bancassurance, solvency ratio and types of life and general insurance.
Regulation and history: IRDAI, key insurance laws, and the history of insurance and banking in India, including nationalisation.
Banking and markets: RBI, SEBI, money market and capital market instruments, derivatives, financial inclusion and current banking and insurance news.
English Descriptive Paper
This paper has two questions in 30 minutes, 25 marks in total, and is qualifying in nature. Earlier papers reported letters, emails, reports and precis writing. Practise formal letters to insurers or officials, short reports, situation-based notes and summaries of a passage.
Professional Knowledge for Specialist Posts
Candidates for the Specialist and AE posts face a professional knowledge test in the mains, in place of the Generalist data analysis section. The reported 2025 Specialist pattern differs from the Generalist one, so confirm the details in the notification for your post.

|---|---|
Chartered Accountant | Financial and cost accounting, auditing, taxation, company law, financial reporting |
Company Secretary | Company law, secretarial practice, SEBI rules, compliance |
Actuarial | Life insurance mathematics, statistics, probability, financial mathematics |
Insurance Specialist | Underwriting, claims, risk management, life and general products, IRDAI rules |

Overlap Between Prelims and Mains
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 35 marks | 90 marks | Practise mains-level puzzles from the start; they also cover the prelims |
Quantitative aptitude and DI | 35 marks | 90 marks | Build calculation speed once, then add caselets and mixed charts |
English | 30 marks (qualifying) | 25 marks (descriptive, qualifying) | Reading habit helps both; add typed writing practice later |
Awareness | Not tested | 120 marks | Start early, because the prelims will not force you to |

Candidates who clear the mains are called for a personal interview that tests general awareness, insurance and financial knowledge, communication and suitability for an officer role. Prepare your own profile, your degree subjects, current affairs and basic insurance concepts.
