Life Insurance Corporation of India Assistant
LIC Assistant is a recruitment exam conducted by Life Insurance Corporation of India for assistant-cadre recruitment, relevant to candidates preparing for insurance and financial-sector recruitment.
LIC Assistant is the clerical cadre recruitment of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). Assistants work in LIC branch and divisional offices, handling policy servicing, premium collection, customer queries and back-office records. Recruitment is done division-wise, so you apply for one division and compete for the vacancies of that division only.
LIC does not hold this exam every year. The last full LIC Assistant recruitment was notified in September 2019, and as of 30 October 2026 no new Assistant notification has been published on the LIC website. This page separates what is confirmed from what is expected: the current status, the facts of the 2019 cycle, eligibility, the exam pattern, the syllabus, salary and a practical preparation plan you can start before the next notification arrives.

Latest Notification Status (as of October 2026)
As of 30 October 2026, the Careers section of the LIC website lists the 2025 recruitment of Assistant Administrative Officers (AAO) and Assistant Engineers, but no notice for the recruitment of Assistants. Several coaching and job portals have been predicting an LIC Assistant notification through 2026, sometimes with exam dates and vacancy numbers attached. None of these figures has come from LIC, so treat them as speculation.
Here is what you can reasonably say right now:
Confirmed: The last completed Assistant recruitment was the 2019 cycle. Its pattern, eligibility and fee are the most reliable guide to what the next cycle will look like.
Not confirmed: The next notification date, vacancy count, exam dates, fee and any pattern changes.
Likely to change: Age reference dates, pay figures (LIC pay scales have been revised since 2019) and the application fee.
Check the official Careers page regularly: https://licindia.in/web/guest/careers. When a new notification appears, its rules replace everything labelled "2019" on this page.
Previous Cycle: LIC Assistant 2019 Key Facts
The 2019 cycle ran on a tight schedule. The application window was only about two weeks, and the Prelims was held about a month after registration closed. Expect a similar pace next time, which is why preparing before the notification matters.
Event (2019 cycle) | Date |
|---|---|
Notification and start of online registration | 17 September 2019 |
Last date for registration and fee payment | 1 October 2019 |
Prelims (originally scheduled) | 21 and 22 October 2019 |
Prelims (revised and held) | 30 and 31 October 2019 |
Mains | 22 December 2019 |
Division-wise results | From January 2020 (as reported) |
These dates are historical and are shown only to indicate the usual gap between stages. The next cycle's dates will be announced in its own notification.
The 2019 notification listed 7,871 vacancies spread across divisions in the Northern, North Central, East Central, Eastern, Central, South Central, Southern and Western zones. Some later reports quote a slightly higher revised total. Vacancies were published division-wise and category-wise, so the competition in your division matters more than the national total.
LIC Assistant Eligibility
The eligibility rules below are from the 2019 notification. They are a sound planning guide, but confirm them in the next notification. For relaxations, reference dates and examples, see the detailed LIC Assistant eligibility criteria page.
Educational Qualification
Candidates needed a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. The degree had to be completed by the cut-off date stated in the notification, so final-year students should check that date carefully before applying.
Age Limit
The age limit in 2019 was 18 to 30 years as on 1 September 2019. Upper age relaxation applied by category:
Category | Upper age relaxation (2019) |
|---|---|
SC/ST | 5 years |
OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (General/EWS) | 10 years |
PwBD (OBC) | 13 years |
PwBD (SC/ST) | 15 years |
Ex-servicemen | Actual period of service plus 3 years, subject to a maximum age of 45 years |
Confirmed LIC employees | A further 5 years |
Local Language Requirement
Candidates had to know the official language of the state in which they applied, and selected candidates had to show proficiency in it before joining. This is a key point for anyone thinking of applying outside their home state.
Application Fee and How to Apply
In 2019, the fee was paid online at the time of registration and was non-refundable.
Category | Fee (2019) |
|---|---|
SC/ST/PwBD | Rs. 85 intimation charges plus GST and transaction charges |
All other candidates | Rs. 510 application fee-cum-intimation charges plus GST and transaction charges |
The application steps were standard for an online recruitment. Expect the next cycle to follow a similar flow, but use the official notification as your checklist.
Read the division-wise vacancy table: Decide your division based on vacancies, your category and the local language you know.
Register online: Use the application link given on the LIC Careers page, and note your registration number and password.
Fill in details: Enter personal, educational and category details exactly as they appear on your certificates.
Upload documents: Photograph, signature and any other items in the size and format the notification specifies.
Pay the fee and submit: Keep a copy of the submitted form and the payment receipt.
Common reasons for trouble later include a mismatch between the name on the form and the certificates, choosing a division whose local language you do not know, and an unclear photograph or signature.
LIC Assistant Exam Pattern
Both stages are online and objective. The Prelims filters candidates; only the Mains score decides the final merit list. The full breakdown, including timing strategy, is on the LIC Assistant exam pattern page.
Prelims (2019 pattern)
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English Language or Hindi Language (qualifying) | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
The language test was qualifying only. Shortlisting for Mains was based on the Reasoning and Numerical Ability scores, with about 20 times the number of vacancies called to the Mains in each division and category.
Mains (2019 pattern)
The 2019 Mains carried 200 questions for 200 marks in 150 minutes, but the test mix varied by zone. In zones that included a Hindi test, there were five tests of 40 questions each: Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude, General or Financial Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language and Hindi Language. Zones without the Hindi test (reported as Eastern, South Central and Southern) had four tests with more questions in reasoning, awareness and quantitative aptitude. Each test had its own time limit.
A quarter of the marks assigned to a question was deducted for each wrong answer in both stages, as reported for the 2019 cycle.
What this means for you
Prelims is a speed test: 35 questions in 20 minutes in each scored section leaves well under a minute per question.
Do not neglect the language section: It does not count for ranking, but failing its qualifying mark ends your attempt.
Mains decides everything: Financial awareness and computer aptitude appear only in the Mains, so start them early rather than after the Prelims.
LIC Assistant Syllabus Summary
LIC names the tests in its notification but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topics below are built from the notification and from questions asked in previous papers, so use them as a working checklist. The complete list is on the LIC Assistant syllabus page.
Subject | Stage | Important topics |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Ability | Prelims and Mains | Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, coding-decoding, blood relations, input-output |
Numerical Ability / Quantitative Aptitude | Prelims and Mains | Simplification, approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, arithmetic word problems |
English Language | Prelims and Mains | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, sentence rearrangement, fillers |
Hindi Language | Prelims (option) and Mains (some zones) | Comprehension, grammar, synonyms and antonyms, error detection |
General or Financial Awareness | Mains | Current affairs, banking and insurance awareness, static GK |
Computer Aptitude | Mains | Computer basics, MS Office, internet, networking, cyber security |
Selection Process

Main examination: Online objective test with sectional qualifying marks. Final merit is prepared division-wise and category-wise from the Mains score only.
Pre-recruitment medical examination: Provisionally selected candidates must be found medically fit.
Document verification and language proficiency: Certificates are checked, and proficiency in the local language must be shown before appointment.
There was no interview in the 2019 Assistant recruitment.
Salary and Career Growth
The 2019 notification placed Assistants in the scale of Rs. 14,435 to Rs. 40,080, with a starting basic pay of Rs. 14,435 per month plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance, city compensatory allowance and other benefits. Total monthly emoluments at the time were reported at roughly Rs. 30,000 in larger cities, which is not an official figure and varied by posting.
Item | 2019 notification |
|---|---|
Pay scale | Rs. 14,435 to Rs. 40,080 |
Starting basic pay | Rs. 14,435 per month |
Allowances | DA, HRA, CCA and other admissible benefits |
Probation | 6 months |
LIC pay scales have been revised since 2019, so the next notification will show higher figures. Use the new notification for current pay. Over a career, Assistants can move up through internal promotion channels, including promotion to the officer cadre as per LIC's promotion rules.
How to Prepare for LIC Assistant
Because the gap between notification and Prelims was only about six weeks in 2019, the most useful preparation happens before the notification. A practical sequence looks like this:
Build speed in the Prelims subjects: Practise simplification, approximation, number series and short reasoning sets daily. Accuracy at speed matters more than difficult questions.
Start Mains-only subjects early: Read banking and insurance news for 30 to 40 minutes a day and make monthly current-affairs notes. Cover computer basics in short weekly blocks.
Strengthen English or Hindi: Read one editorial a day and practise comprehension, cloze tests and error detection.
Add timed tests: Move to 20-minute sectional tests, then full-length mocks in the Prelims pattern. Analyse every test the same day.
Previous Year Cut-off Reference
LIC Assistant cut-offs are set division-wise and differ widely. The figures below are 2019 Mains minimum marks (out of 200) for a few divisions as reported by third-party compilations of LIC data. They are not an official category-wise list.
Division (2019) | Reported Mains cut-off (out of 200) |
|---|---|
Delhi (Delhi and Haryana) | 142.25 |
Lucknow | 135.75 |
Bhopal | 133.75 |
Patna 1 | 119.00 |
Treat these as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them. More divisions and trend notes are on the LIC Assistant cut-off page.
LIC Assistant vs Other LIC Recruitments
Students often mix up LIC's different recruitments. They have separate notifications, eligibility and patterns.
Recruitment | Cadre | Key difference from LIC Assistant |
|---|---|---|
LIC Assistant | Clerical | Division-wise recruitment, Prelims and Mains, no interview (2019) |
LIC AAO | Officer | Officer-level post with a higher pay scale and an interview stage |
LIC ADO | Apprentice Development Officer | Field role focused on agent recruitment and business development |
LIC HFL Junior Assistant | Clerical, at LIC Housing Finance Ltd | A separate company with its own notification and exam |
If you are preparing for more than one of these, the reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English work overlaps heavily, so one well-planned routine can serve all of them.
