LIC Assistant Eligibility 2026: Age, Qualification, Language
LIC Assistant eligibility comes down to four checks: a bachelor's degree, an age within the limit on the notified date, Indian nationality and knowledge of the local language of the state where you apply. The Life Insurance Corporation of India recruits Assistants division-wise, so the last check is more important here than in most clerical exams.
As of 30 October 2026, LIC has not released a new Assistant notification. The rules on this page are from the 2019 notification, the last full cycle, and are the most reliable guide to what the next one will ask. Reference dates for age and qualification will certainly change, and other details may too. Use this page to check where you stand now, then confirm every point against the new notification on the official LIC website.

What May Change in the Next Notification
Recruitment of Assistants is irregular, and seven years have passed since the last cycle. When reading older pages, keep these points in mind:
Reference dates will move: The age date (1 September 2019 last time) and the date by which the degree must be completed will be set fresh.
Category rules may be updated: Relaxation rules generally follow government norms, and the notification will state the current version.
Fee and division list will change: Divisions, vacancy split and fee are notified for each cycle.
Unofficial "2026" figures are not rules: Several websites publish expected age limits and dates. Rely only on what LIC publishes.

Educational Qualification
Degree required
Candidates needed a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university or institution recognised by the Government of India. Graduates in arts, commerce, science, engineering, management or any other stream were equally eligible, so a B.Com, B.Sc or B.Tech degree all met the requirement. No specific subject and no minimum percentage were reported as conditions in the 2019 notification.
Final-year students
The degree had to be completed by the date specified in the notification. If you are in your final year when the notification comes out, check that date carefully. In general, candidates must be able to produce the mark sheet or degree certificate showing that they passed on or before the stated date. A result declared after that date usually makes a candidate ineligible for that cycle.
Equivalent and distance-mode degrees
Degrees obtained through recognised distance or open universities are generally treated like regular degrees, provided the university and the programme are recognised by the relevant authority. If your degree is from a foreign university or is an equivalent qualification, check the notification for the documents needed to prove equivalence.
Age Limit and Relaxation
Age limit in the 2019 cycle
The age limit was 18 to 30 years as on 1 September 2019. Worked out, this meant that a general candidate had to be born not earlier than 2 September 1989 and not later than 1 September 2001, with both dates included. The next notification will state its own reference date and date-of-birth window.
Upper age relaxation
Category | Upper age relaxation (2019) |
|---|---|
SC/ST | 5 years |
OBC (non-creamy layer) | 3 years |
PwBD (General/EWS) | 10 years |
PwBD (OBC) | 13 years |
PwBD (SC/ST) | 15 years |
Ex-servicemen | Actual period of service in the defence forces plus 3 years, subject to a maximum age of 45 years |
Confirmed LIC employees | A further 5 years over and above the relaxation for their category |
Relaxations for different groups were generally not added together beyond what the notification allowed, and caps applied. The detailed conditions, including those for disabled ex-servicemen and any other special groups, will be set out in the next notification.
How to check your own age eligibility
When the notification is released, take the age reference date it gives and count your completed years on that date. If you are a general candidate, you must be at least 18 and not older than 30 on that date. If you belong to a category with relaxation, add the relaxation to the upper limit only. For example, an OBC candidate under the 2019 rules could be up to 33 years old on the reference date, and an SC or ST candidate up to 35. Remember that the lower limit of 18 does not change with category.
Nationality
Candidates had to be citizens of India. Some recruitments also accept certain categories of non-citizens, but the eligibility summaries of the 2019 Assistant notification listed Indian nationality as the requirement. If you are unsure, read the nationality clause in the next notification before applying.
Local Language Requirement and Division Choice
This is the eligibility point most likely to cause problems later. Candidates had to know the official language of the state where the chosen division was located, and selected candidates had to show proficiency in it before joining.
Choose your division carefully: In 2019, a candidate could apply for only one division. Picking a division in another state for its larger vacancy count makes sense only if you genuinely know that state's language.
Keep proof of language knowledge: Mark sheets showing the language studied at school level are the usual proof. If you do not have one, expect a proficiency check before appointment.
Check zone-specific test patterns: In 2019, the Mains pattern varied by zone and some zones had a Hindi Language test. Your division choice also decides which Mains version you take; see the LIC Assistant exam pattern page.
Other Conditions
Medical fitness: Provisionally selected candidates had to pass LIC's pre-recruitment medical examination.
Character and antecedents: Appointment was subject to satisfactory verification of character and antecedents and of the documents submitted.
Category certificates: SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD candidates had to produce valid certificates in the prescribed format when asked. OBC candidates had to belong to the non-creamy layer.
No attempt limit: No limit on the number of attempts was reported. You can apply in any cycle in which you meet the age and qualification conditions.
Probation: Selected Assistants served a probation period, reported as six months in 2019.
Who Is Not Eligible
Candidates commonly lose their candidature for reasons that have nothing to do with exam performance. Check these before you apply:
Degree completed after the cut-off date: If your result comes after the date the notification specifies, you cannot use that degree for this cycle.
Age outside the window: Being even one day older than the upper limit, after relaxation, makes the application invalid.
Wrong category claimed: Claiming a category without a valid certificate, or claiming OBC while in the creamy layer, can lead to cancellation even after selection.
Multiple applications: Applying for more than one division was not allowed in 2019.
No knowledge of the local language: Failing to show proficiency in the state's official language can block appointment.
Mismatched details: Name, date of birth or category on the form that does not match the certificates is a common cause of rejection at document verification.
Common Eligibility Scenarios
Students often ask about situations that the rules do not spell out in a single line. The table below applies the 2019 rules to some common cases. It is guidance, not a ruling; the next notification is the final word.
Situation | Likely position under 2019 rules | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Final-year student whose result is expected after the notified date | Not eligible for that cycle | The exact date by which the degree must be completed |
Graduate from a recognised open or distance university | Eligible | Recognition of the university and programme |
Engineering or professional degree holder | Eligible, as any discipline is accepted | No extra condition was reported |
Candidate who wants to apply in a neighbouring state | Eligible only if they know that state's official language | Proof of language knowledge |
OBC candidate aged 32 on the reference date | Eligible with 3 years of relaxation, if non-creamy layer | A valid non-creamy layer certificate |
General candidate aged 31 on the reference date | Not eligible | Whether any other relaxation applies, such as ex-servicemen status |
Candidate who applied in 2019 and was not selected | Can apply again if within the age limit | No attempt limit was reported |
If your situation is not listed, read the eligibility and general instructions sections of the official notification line by line before paying the fee. Fees are non-refundable, so an ineligible application costs both money and an attempt.
Application Fee and Documents to Keep Ready
The fee in 2019 is shown below as a reference; the next notification will set its own amount.
Category | Fee (2019) |
|---|---|
SC/ST/PwBD | Rs. 85 intimation charges plus GST and transaction charges |
All other candidates | Rs. 510 application fee-cum-intimation charges plus GST and transaction charges |
Keep these documents ready so you can apply quickly when the short application window opens:
Proof of age: Class 10 certificate or another accepted proof of date of birth.
Educational documents: Graduation mark sheets and degree or provisional certificate.
Category and disability certificates: In the current, valid format, where applicable.
Language proof: Mark sheets showing the local language studied, if you have them.
Photograph and signature: Recent, clear scans in the size and format the notification asks for.
