LIC Assistant Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topics
The LIC Assistant syllabus covers the subjects tested in the two online stages of the Life Insurance Corporation of India's clerical recruitment: Reasoning, Numerical Ability and a language test in the Prelims, and a broader set in the Mains that adds General or Financial Awareness, Computer Aptitude and, in some zones, Hindi. Because the Prelims only screens candidates and the Mains decides the merit list, the way you divide your time across these subjects matters.
LIC names the tests in its notification but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists below are built from the 2019 notification, the last full Assistant cycle, and from questions asked in previous papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. As of 30 October 2026, no new LIC Assistant notification has been released, so check the next one for any change in tests or pattern.

Key Points to Know Before You Start
No official topic list: LIC publishes test names, question counts and timings, not topics. Previous papers are the most reliable guide to what is asked.
The Mains varies by zone: In 2019, zones reported as Eastern, South Central and Southern had no Hindi test and gave more questions to reasoning, awareness and quantitative aptitude. Check your zone's pattern once the notification is out.
Two subjects appear only in the Mains: General or Financial Awareness and Computer Aptitude are not in the Prelims, so they are easy to postpone and hard to catch up on later.
The language test in Prelims is qualifying: It does not add to your rank, but you must clear its minimum mark.
Insurance awareness gives you an edge: Questions on LIC, insurance terms and the insurance regulator are a natural fit for this exam, and many candidates skip them.
LIC Assistant Prelims Syllabus
The Prelims is a 60-minute speed test. Questions are mostly at a moderate level, so the topics that reward quick, accurate calculation and fast reading deserve the most practice.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Reasoning Ability | Seating arrangement (linear and circular), puzzles, syllogism, inequality, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, alphanumeric series | Inequality, syllogism, then puzzles |
Numerical Ability | Simplification, approximation, number series, quadratic equations, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed and distance, small data interpretation sets | Simplification and approximation |
English Language | Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, fillers, sentence rearrangement, phrase replacement, vocabulary | Error spotting and fillers |
Hindi Language (option) | Comprehension, grammar, synonyms and antonyms, error detection, fill in the blanks | Grammar rules and comprehension |
In Reasoning, puzzles and seating arrangements usually carry the largest block of questions, but the short topics (inequality, syllogism, coding) are where you collect quick marks. In Numerical Ability, simplification, approximation and number series reward daily practice more than any other topic, because speed improves steadily with repetition.
LIC Assistant Mains Syllabus
The Mains is longer and wider. It repeats the Prelims subjects at a slightly higher level and adds two knowledge-based areas.
Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude
Reasoning in the Mains leans more heavily on puzzles and arrangements, often with more variables. Computer Aptitude is combined in the same test.
Reasoning: Puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, machine input-output, coding-decoding (including symbol-based), blood relations, direction sense, data sufficiency.
Computer Aptitude: History and generations of computers, hardware and software, input and output devices, memory and storage, operating systems, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet and email, networking basics, computer security and viruses, keyboard shortcuts, abbreviations.
Computer Aptitude questions are usually short and factual, so a compact topic map is enough to prepare them well.
Computer topic | Typical question focus |
|---|---|
Hardware and memory | Types of memory (RAM, ROM, cache), storage units, input and output devices |
Software and operating systems | System versus application software, functions of an operating system, file types |
MS Office | Common features and keyboard shortcuts in Word, Excel and PowerPoint |
Internet and networking | Network types, protocols, browsers, email terms, IP addresses, domain names |
Security | Viruses and malware, firewalls, phishing, passwords and safe practices |
General or Financial Awareness
This is the section with the widest range and the one where steady preparation pays off most.
Area | What to cover |
|---|---|
Current affairs | National and international news, appointments, awards, sports, summits, government schemes, reports and indices, mostly from the four to six months before the exam |
Banking awareness | RBI functions, monetary policy terms, types of banks, financial inclusion schemes, payment systems, banking terms |
Insurance awareness | History and structure of LIC, the insurance regulator and its role, types of life and general insurance, common insurance terms such as premium, sum assured, maturity and nominee |
Financial and economic awareness | Union Budget highlights, economic survey, financial institutions and regulators, important economic terms |
Static GK | Capitals and currencies, national parks, important days, headquarters of organisations, books and authors |
In the 2019 Mains, analysis of the exam reported that most questions came from current affairs of the preceding months, with fewer static and insurance questions. That pattern can shift, so keep insurance basics in your revision even if current affairs takes most of your time.
Quantitative Aptitude
Data interpretation: Tables, bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts and caselets. This usually carries the largest share of questions.
Arithmetic: Percentage, ratio and proportion, average, ages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, pipes and cisterns, speed, time and distance, boats and streams, mixtures and alligations, mensuration, probability, permutation and combination.
Quick-calculation topics: Approximation, quadratic equations and number series.
English Language
Reading comprehension: One or two passages with questions on meaning, inference and vocabulary.
Grammar-based questions: Error detection, sentence correction, fillers and phrase replacement.
Sentence-structure questions: Cloze test, sentence rearrangement and match-the-column formats.
Hindi Language
Where the Mains includes a Hindi test, expect questions on comprehension (passage reading), error detection in sentences, synonyms and antonyms, cloze test, word and sentence arrangement, idioms and proverbs, and fill in the blanks. Candidates from non-Hindi backgrounds applying in these zones should start early, because this test carries the same 40 marks as any other.
Overlap Between Prelims and Mains
Most of the Prelims syllabus carries over to the Mains. Planning the overlap lets you study each topic once and deepen it later rather than restarting.
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | Short topics and moderate puzzles | Harder puzzles, input-output, data sufficiency | Build speed on short topics first, then add one complex puzzle set a day |
Quantitative | Simplification, series, basic arithmetic | Heavier data interpretation and word problems | Learn arithmetic once and apply it in DI sets from week four |
English | Qualifying, 30 questions | Scored, 40 questions | Prepare for the Mains level from the start; the Prelims will follow |
Awareness | Not tested | 40 to 50 questions | Start daily current affairs from the beginning, not after the Prelims |
Computer Aptitude | Not tested | Part of the reasoning test | Cover one computer topic a week alongside reasoning |
Topic Weightage Seen in Previous Papers
LIC does not publish topic weightage. The figures below come from analyses of one shift of the 2019 Mains (five-test pattern) and show how questions were spread. Treat them as indicative, not fixed.
Section | Reported distribution (2019 Mains, one shift) |
|---|---|
Reasoning | About 18 questions on puzzles and seating arrangement; the rest on syllogism, inequality, input-output, coding and blood relations |
Quantitative Aptitude | About 15 data interpretation and 15 arithmetic questions, with 5 each on approximation and quadratic equations |
English Language | About 7 comprehension questions, with the rest spread across cloze test, rearrangement, error detection, sentence correction and matching |
Hindi Language | About 10 comprehension questions, with the rest on grammar, vocabulary and arrangement |
General or Financial Awareness | Mostly current affairs from the preceding months |
The lesson is clear: in reasoning and quantitative aptitude, two topic families (arrangements and data interpretation) carry close to half the marks. Give them proportionate practice time.
Common Syllabus Mistakes to Avoid
Most candidates lose marks not because they missed a topic but because they spread their time badly. These are the patterns to watch for:
Postponing awareness until after the Prelims: The gap between the two stages was under two months in 2019. Current affairs for a full Mains section cannot be built in that time.
Treating the Prelims language test lightly: It is qualifying, but a weak attempt here ends the exam regardless of your reasoning and numerical scores.
Ignoring the zone pattern: Candidates in zones with a Hindi test need to prepare a full 40-mark Hindi section. Candidates in zones without it face more reasoning and awareness questions instead.
Learning computer topics only from lists: Short daily quizzes stick far better than reading a long list of terms once.
Collecting too many sources: One set of notes per subject, revised often, beats several books read once.
How to Cover the LIC Assistant Syllabus
The 2019 cycle gave candidates only about six weeks between notification and Prelims, so a plan that starts before the notification is safer. A 14-week outline:
Weeks 1 to 4, foundations: Arithmetic chapters, simplification and series daily; short reasoning topics; one grammar topic a week; 30 to 40 minutes of current affairs a day with monthly notes.
Weeks 5 to 8, depth: Puzzles and seating arrangement daily; data interpretation sets; reading comprehension and cloze tests; weekly computer aptitude topic; insurance and banking awareness notes.
Weeks 9 to 11, timed practice: 20-minute sectional tests in the Prelims pattern; topic tests for weak areas; Hindi practice if your zone needs it.
Weeks 12 to 14, full mocks: Full-length Prelims and Mains mocks, same-day analysis, and revision from an error log.
Testkart's section-wise analysis is most useful when you review it against this syllabus list and mark each topic as strong, average or weak.
