LIC Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims and Mains

The LIC Assistant exam pattern has two online objective stages: a 100-mark Prelims that screens candidates and a 200-mark Mains that decides the final merit list. Each section has its own time limit, so you cannot move unused minutes from one section to another. That single rule shapes how you should practise.

The Life Insurance Corporation of India last ran a full Assistant recruitment in 2019, and as of 30 October 2026 no new notification has been released. The pattern below is the 2019 pattern, which is the most reliable guide to the next cycle. One detail that many pages miss: the 2019 Mains was not the same in every zone. This page explains both Mains versions, the marking scheme, how the merit list is prepared and what all of it means for your time management.

Key Points to Know

  • No new notification yet: Everything here is from the 2019 cycle. A new notification can change question counts, timings or sections, so recheck it when it appears.

  • Two Mains versions: In 2019, some zones had a five-test Mains with a Hindi Language test, while zones reported as Eastern, South Central and Southern had a four-test Mains without Hindi. Both carried 200 marks in 150 minutes.

  • Prelims language test is qualifying: Your rank for Mains shortlisting comes from Reasoning and Numerical Ability only.

  • Older pages can mislead: Some pages show a single Mains table with mismatched section times. Follow the official notification for your zone.

LIC Assistant Prelims Exam Pattern

The Prelims is a short, fast test. It had three sections in 2019, each with its own 20-minute timer.

Qualifying rules in the Prelims

  • Language test: Candidates chose English or Hindi for this section. It was qualifying only, so marks here did not count towards the shortlisting rank, but you had to reach the minimum mark set by LIC.

  • Sectional minimums: Candidates also had to meet the minimum marks in each section, as decided by LIC, with lower minimums for reserved categories.

  • Shortlisting for Mains: Candidates were ranked on the combined Reasoning and Numerical Ability score. About 20 times the number of vacancies in each category and division were called for the Mains, subject to availability.

Because shortlisting is division-wise, the Prelims cut-off in your division depends on the number of vacancies there and the number of applicants, not on a national figure.

LIC Assistant Mains Exam Pattern

The Mains is the stage that matters for selection. It is longer, it covers more subjects and each test has its own time limit. The two versions used in 2019 are shown below, as reported from the 2019 cycle.

Some third-party pages list a different time for Quantitative Aptitude in the five-test version. The section times above add up to the stated 150 minutes, but confirm the exact timing for your zone in the official notification when it is released.

Each Mains test had a sectional qualifying mark. Scoring well overall does not help if you fall below the minimum in any one test, which is why steady performance across all sections matters more than a very high score in one.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Each question carried one mark in both stages. For every wrong answer, one quarter of the marks assigned to that question was deducted, as reported for the 2019 cycle. An unanswered question carried no penalty.

Plus 1 mark

Minus 0.25 marks

No change

In practice, four wrong answers wipe out the gain from one correct answer. If you can rule out two of the five options, an educated guess is usually worth taking. A blind guess on a question you have not read is not.

  • The Prelims rewards speed over depth: At about half a minute per question, you cannot solve every puzzle. Pick the quick topics first and return to long sets only if time is left.

  • The awareness test is the fastest marks-per-minute section: Awareness questions take seconds if you know the answer. Strong preparation here frees mental energy for the calculation-heavy tests.

  • Sectional timers punish over-investment: Time saved in one test cannot be used in another, so do not rush a section you are good at.

  • Zone matters for preparation: If your zone has the Hindi test, you need a 40-mark Hindi preparation plan. If it does not, expect 60 reasoning and computer questions and plan for stamina in that test.

Medical Examination and Language Proficiency

After the Mains, provisionally selected candidates had to pass a pre-recruitment medical examination. Selection was subject to being found medically fit for LIC service.

Candidates also had to know the official language of the state for which they applied. Selected candidates had to show proficiency in that language before joining. If you are planning to apply in a division outside your home state, check this requirement carefully; the LIC Assistant eligibility page explains it in more detail.

How the Final Merit List Is Prepared

The final merit list was prepared division-wise and category-wise on the basis of the Mains score alone. Prelims marks were not added.

  1. Clear every Mains section: Candidates below the sectional minimum in any test were not considered, whatever their total.

  2. Rank by Mains total: Among qualified candidates, the total out of 200 decided the order within each category in the division.

  3. Match ranks to vacancies: Candidates were selected in order of merit up to the number of vacancies in their division and category, subject to the medical examination and document checks.

As an illustration in words: suppose two candidates in the same division and category both clear the Prelims. One scored much higher in the Prelims but 125 in the Mains; the other scored just above the Prelims cut-off but 135 in the Mains. The second candidate ranks higher, because only the Mains total counts. Tie-breaking rules, as reported for 2019, favoured higher educational qualification and then age, but check the next notification for the exact order.

To see the kind of Mains totals that secured selection last time, look at the division-wise figures on the LIC Assistant cut-off page.

Prelims vs Mains: Side-by-Side

The two stages test overlapping skills, but they reward different habits. This comparison helps you decide how to split preparation time.

Difficulty Level Seen in 2019

LIC does not publish difficulty ratings. Analyses of the 2019 Mains (five-test version, one shift) described the paper as follows. Treat these as indicative only, because the next paper may be set differently.

Mains test (2019)

Reported difficulty

What stood out

Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude

Moderate

Puzzles and seating arrangement took close to half the section

General or Financial Awareness

Moderate

Mostly recent current affairs, fewer static and insurance questions

Quantitative Aptitude

Easy to moderate

Data interpretation and arithmetic word problems made up most of the paper

English Language

Easy to moderate

Spread across comprehension, cloze, rearrangement and error-based questions

Hindi Language

Moderate

Comprehension carried the largest block of questions

The practical takeaway is that the Mains was not built around very hard questions. Selection depended on consistent accuracy across all tests under sectional time limits.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

For the Prelims

  • Run two rounds per section: First attempt every question you can solve in under 30 seconds, then go back for the longer ones.

  • Set a cap for puzzles: If a reasoning set is not clicking within 2 to 3 minutes, move on.

  • Secure the language qualifying mark: Attempt the direct grammar and vocabulary questions first, then comprehension.

For the Mains

  • Plan section by section: Decide a target attempt count for each test in advance and track it on the timer.

  • Use awareness time well: Answer what you know, avoid blind guesses, and do not dwell on unfamiliar facts.

  • Protect accuracy in quantitative aptitude: Data interpretation sets can be long; read all questions in a set before starting the calculations.
