LIC HFL Exam Pattern 2026: Marks, Sections and Timing
The LIC HFL exam pattern depends on the post. The Junior Assistant recruitment of 2026 used a 200-mark online test followed by an interview. The Apprentice Programme-010, which is open now, uses a shorter 100-mark online test taken remotely under proctoring. Knowing the pattern early tells you how much time each question gets and how much a wrong answer can cost.
This page explains both patterns, the marking scheme, the stages after the test, and a practical way to use your time. The details come from the advertisements issued by LIC Housing Finance Limited, which is a separate company from LIC of India. Where an advertisement is silent, for example on negative marking in the apprentice test, we say so instead of guessing.

Junior Assistant Exam Pattern
The Junior Assistant test had five sections of equal size. The questions were multiple choice and the language of the test was English only.
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
English Language | 40 | 40 |
Logical Reasoning | 40 | 40 |
General Awareness (emphasis on housing finance industry) | 40 | 40 |
Numerical Ability | 40 | 40 |
Computer Skill | 40 | 40 |
Total | 200 | 200 |
Total time: 120 minutes. The advertisement gives one duration for the whole test, so check your call letter to see whether sections are timed separately.
Equating of scores: If the test is held in more than one session, scores are equated across sessions.
Cut-offs: Sectional and total cut-offs may apply, at the discretion of the company. The advertisement does not state any minimum marks.
Centres: A candidate chose an examination state, which could differ from the state of the vacancy, and the company could reassign centres.
Apprentice Exam Pattern
The apprentice test is conducted online by the BFSI Sector Skill Council and is taken from home or any quiet place with a camera-enabled device and a stable internet connection.
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
General and Financial Awareness | 25 | 25 |
General English | 25 | 25 |
Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude | 25 | 25 |
Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
Total time: 60 minutes for all sections.
Language: The advertisement mentions English and Hindi for the awareness section. Check the information handout for the language of the other sections.
Identity check: The advertisement says an Aadhaar card must be shown as identity during the proctored test.
Registration for the test: Candidates who do not register for the written test are disqualified.
Details on the test process are due in an information handout that the BFSI Sector Skill Council emails to eligible candidates. Read it as soon as it arrives, because it will carry the practical rules that the advertisement leaves out.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
In the Junior Assistant test, every question carried one mark, which is why 200 questions made 200 marks. A wrong answer cost 0.25 marks, and unanswered questions carried no penalty. For the apprentice test, the advertisement gives the marks per section but does not state a negative-marking rule.
Here is a simple illustration for the Junior Assistant pattern. Suppose you attempt 150 questions and 130 are correct. Your 20 wrong answers cost 20 x 0.25 = 5 marks, so your score is 130 - 5 = 125 out of 200. This is an example of how the calculation works, not a prediction of any cut-off.
Attempted | Correct | Wrong | Score (out of 200) |
|---|---|---|---|
150 | 130 | 20 | 125.00 |
170 | 135 | 35 | 126.25 |
120 | 115 | 5 | 113.75 |
The second row shows that attempting more can help even when accuracy falls, provided accuracy stays high enough. The third row shows that a very high accuracy on fewer attempts can still fall short. The best result usually comes from a balance of attempts and accuracy that you find through mocks.
What the Pattern Means for You
Time per question is short: The Junior Assistant test gave 120 minutes for 200 questions, which is about 36 seconds per question. The apprentice test works out to the same 36 seconds per question. Speed in the easy sections decides how much time you get for harder ones.
Every section is worth the same: In the Junior Assistant test each section had 40 marks. A weak Computer Skill or General Awareness section costs as much as a weak Numerical Ability section.
A blind guess has no expected gain: If a question has five options, as many banking-style tests do, a random guess is right one time in five. The expected gain from guessing is then 0.2 x 1 - 0.8 x 0.25 = 0. Guess only after you eliminate at least one or two options.
Sectional cut-offs are possible: Because the company can apply sectional cut-offs, do not drop a section completely, even if you are very strong in another.
The apprentice test is a different skill: With 25 questions per section and no listed deduction, accuracy and focus matter more than a long strategy. Practise on a laptop or phone with the camera on, so the setup does not distract you.
Stages After the Online Test
Junior Assistant
Candidates were shortlisted for an interview based on exam merit and the number of vacancies. Documents were verified at the interview, and candidates had to bring a signed system-generated application printout and original certificates. Final selection was followed by a medical examination, at the candidate's cost, and background verification.
Apprentice
The online test is followed by document verification and a personal interview at LIC HFL offices on 15 November 2026, as listed in the advertisement. Shortlisted candidates then receive engagement letters, which the advertisement lists for the third week of November 2026 on a tentative basis.
How Final Selection Works
For the Junior Assistant post, final selection was based on the combined marks of the online test and the interview, in order of merit. The advertisement also set a minimum qualifying mark for the interview. It did not publish the weightage of the two stages or the qualifying marks.
Item | Published in the advertisement |
|---|---|
Online test and interview both count | Yes |
Minimum interview qualifying mark | Mentioned, but the number is not stated |
Weightage between test and interview | Not stated |
Sectional and total test cut-offs | May apply, but not stated |
Do not trust any website that quotes an exact weightage as official. Plan to do well in both stages.
Exam Day Rules and Conduct
The Junior Assistant advertisement set out rules that are useful guidance for any LIC HFL online test. Always follow the instructions on your own call letter.
Call letter: It was released 7 to 10 days before the exam. Carry a printed copy.
Identity proof: Carry an original photo identity proof such as PAN card, Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter card, along with a photocopy. Ration cards and learner's licences were not accepted.
Biometrics and photograph: These may be captured on the day.
Prohibited items: Mobile phones and calculators were not allowed.
Malpractice: Answer patterns are analysed for similarity, and cheating leads to disqualification.
Extra time for eligible candidates: Candidates with a disability of at least 40% in specified categories could get 20 extra minutes per hour, and scribe rules applied.
Time Management and Exam Strategy
The suggested split below is a starting point for the Junior Assistant pattern. Adjust it after your first few mocks, because your strong and weak sections will differ.
Section | Suggested time | Why |
|---|---|---|
Computer Skill | 10 to 12 minutes | Direct, fact-based questions that reward quick recall |
General Awareness | 12 to 15 minutes | You either know it or you do not, so do not linger |
English Language | 22 to 25 minutes | Passages need reading time, grammar questions are quick |
Logical Reasoning | 28 to 30 minutes | Puzzles are time-heavy, so pick sets carefully |
Numerical Ability | 28 to 30 minutes | Start with simplification and arithmetic, leave heavy data sets for later |
Review | Remaining time | Revisit marked questions |
Start with your strongest section: Early correct answers build speed and confidence.
Skip and mark: If a question takes more than about 90 seconds, move on and come back if time remains.
Track accuracy, not just attempts: After every mock, record attempts, correct answers and wrong answers by section.
Timed practice is the only reliable way to build this rhythm. You can attempt LIC HFL online tests on Testkart in the same section structure and use the section-wise analysis to see where you lose time. Pair them with the topic list on the LIC HFL syllabus page, and read the LIC HFL cut-off guide before you set a target score.
Practice targets by section
These are practice targets for mock tests, not official benchmarks. They are meant to help you see whether you are improving in the right places. Raise or lower them after you know your own scores.
Section (40 questions) | Attempts to aim for | Accuracy to aim for |
|---|---|---|
English Language | 28 to 32 | 85% or more |
Logical Reasoning | 25 to 30 | 85% or more |
General Awareness | 28 to 32 | 80% or more |
Numerical Ability | 25 to 30 | 85% or more |
Computer Skill | 32 to 36 | 90% or more |
Apprentice Test Strategy
The apprentice test is shorter, so there is less room to recover from a slow start. With 100 questions in 60 minutes, you have about 36 seconds per question, the same pace as the longer test. The split below is a suggestion for practice.
Section | Suggested time | Approach |
|---|---|---|
General and Financial Awareness | 8 to 10 minutes | Answer what you know and move on quickly |
General English | 11 to 13 minutes | Grammar first, then the passage |
Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude | 15 to 17 minutes | Take computer questions first, then series and syllogism |
Quantitative Aptitude | 15 to 17 minutes | Simplification and percentage first |
Because the test is proctored from home, prepare the setup a day earlier. Charge your device, check the camera and internet connection, keep your Aadhaar card ready, and sit where you will not be disturbed. Technical problems waste more time than any difficult question. Attempt a few timed 100-question mocks on Testkart using the same device you will use on the test day.
