LIC HFL Syllabus 2026: Junior Assistant and Apprentice Topics
The LIC HFL syllabus is the list of topics tested in the online exams run by LIC Housing Finance Limited. LIC HFL names the sections of its tests in each advertisement, but it does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic lists on this page are built from those section names and from the question types that entry-level banking and finance tests commonly use. Treat them as a working checklist, not as an official list.
Two LIC HFL tests matter right now. The Junior Assistant test of 2026 had five sections of 40 questions each. The Apprentice Programme-010 test, scheduled for 7 November 2026, has four sections of 25 questions each. This page covers both, shows where they overlap, and ends with a phased plan. LIC HFL is a separate company from LIC of India, so do not use the LIC AAO or LIC Assistant syllabus for this exam.

Key Changes to Know
Two different tests: The Junior Assistant test is a 200-mark paper. The apprentice test is a 100-mark paper with shorter sections. Do not mix their section lists.
Computer topics are handled differently: The Junior Assistant test has a full Computer Skill section. In the apprentice test, computer aptitude is combined with reasoning in one section.
Awareness has a housing finance slant: The Junior Assistant advertisement said General Awareness would emphasise the housing finance industry. The apprentice test names General and Financial Awareness.
No official topic list: Any website that calls its topic list "the official syllabus" is going beyond what the advertisement says.
Older pages are mixed up: Some older pages still show LIC Assistant or LIC AAO syllabus material under the LIC HFL name. Follow the current advertisement.
LIC HFL Junior Assistant Syllabus
The Junior Assistant test is in English only. Each section carries equal weight, so a weak section costs as many marks as a weak section anywhere else. The topic lists below use the section names from the advertisement.
English Language
Expect a mix of grammar and comprehension questions at graduate level. Reading speed matters, because a passage can consume time before you answer a single question.
Reading comprehension: Short passages on business, economy or social topics, with inference and vocabulary questions.
Cloze test: A passage with blanks, where you pick the word that fits grammar and meaning.
Error spotting and sentence improvement: Subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions, articles and common usage errors.
Fill in the blanks and vocabulary: Words in context, synonyms, antonyms and commonly confused words.
Sentence rearrangement: Jumbled sentences and paragraph ordering.
Logical Reasoning
The questions test pattern recognition and careful reading, not memorised facts. Puzzles and seating arrangements take the longest, so decide early which sets are worth attempting.
Puzzles and seating arrangement: Linear, circular and floor-based arrangements with several conditions.
Syllogism and inequalities: Statement and conclusion questions solved with diagrams or symbols.
Input-output and coding-decoding: Rule-based transformations of words and numbers.
Series and sequences: Number, letter and alphanumeric series.
Statement based questions: Assumptions, conclusions and decision making.
General Awareness
This is the section where the housing finance emphasis shows. Static knowledge helps, but current awareness decides most of the marks. Read regularly instead of cramming the week before the test.
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Housing finance industry | How housing finance companies work, home loan types, interest rate basics, EMI, loan-to-value, role of RBI and the National Housing Bank, housing schemes and subsidies, RERA basics | Home loan terms and the regulators |
Banking and finance | RBI policy rates, repo rate, banking terms, financial institutions, insurance basics, important financial abbreviations | Monetary policy vocabulary |
Economy | Budget highlights, economic survey themes, inflation, GDP basics, government schemes | Latest budget and policy rate decisions |
Current affairs | Last six months of national and business news, appointments, awards, sports, summits and reports | A monthly news capsule |
Questions on LIC HFL itself are possible, since the test is for this company. Read its official website to learn its business lines and recent announcements, and practise awareness questions in the LIC HFL online tests on Testkart.
Numerical Ability
This section rewards practice more than any other. Speed in calculation decides how many questions you can attempt in the time available.
Simplification and approximation: Fractions, decimals, surds, squares, cubes and quick estimation.
Arithmetic: Percentage, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, average, simple and compound interest, partnership, mixtures, ages.
Time-based problems: Time and work, pipes and cisterns, time, speed and distance, boats and streams.
Number system and algebra: LCM and HCF, divisibility, quadratic equations, number series.
Data interpretation and data sufficiency: Tables, bar charts, line graphs and pie charts, plus sufficiency questions.
Permutation and combination, probability: Basic counting and probability questions.
Computer Skill
Many candidates ignore this section and then lose easy marks. The questions are basic and fact-based, and 40 marks are on offer.
Fundamentals: Parts of a computer, input and output devices, memory, storage units, generations and number systems.
Software: Operating systems, system and application software, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint features and shortcuts.
Internet and networking: Browsers, email, URLs, network types and common protocols.
Security: Viruses, malware, passwords, firewalls and safe online practices.
Abbreviations: Frequently used computer full forms.
LIC HFL Apprentice Syllabus
The apprentice advertisement names four sections of 25 questions each and does not list topics. The test is short at 60 minutes, so questions are likely to be direct. The table below is a working checklist, not an official list.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
General and Financial Awareness | Banking and insurance basics, financial terms, RBI and regulators, government schemes, housing finance basics, current affairs of the last six months | Financial terms and recent news |
General English | Reading comprehension, error spotting, fill in the blanks, cloze test, sentence rearrangement, vocabulary | Grammar rules and one passage a day |
Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude | Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, series, coding-decoding, plus computer basics, MS Office, internet and security | Series and syllogism, then computer basics |
Quantitative Aptitude | Simplification, percentage, ratio, averages, interest, time and work, time and distance, data interpretation | Simplification and percentage |
The advertisement mentions English and Hindi for the awareness section. Details of the language options and the marking rule are due in an information handout that the BFSI Sector Skill Council emails to eligible candidates, so read it as soon as it arrives.
Overlap Between the Two Tests
If you plan to attempt both, study the shared areas once and then add what is specific to each test.
Area | Junior Assistant | Apprentice | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
English | 40 questions | 25 questions | Same topics. One plan covers both. |
Reasoning | 40 questions | Shared with computer aptitude | Same core topics. Practise puzzles for the longer test. |
Numerical or quantitative | 40 questions | 25 questions | Same arithmetic base. Add data interpretation depth for the longer test. |
Awareness | 40 questions, housing finance slant | 25 questions, financial slant | Build one finance notebook for both. |
Computer | 40 questions, full section | Part of one section | Learn the basics once. Go deeper only for the longer test. |
Which Topics Deserve the Most Time
All five Junior Assistant sections carry 40 marks, so no section can be ignored. The useful question is where an extra hour gives the biggest return. Use this table as a starting point and adjust it after your first two or three mocks.
Section | Quick-return topics | Slow-return topics |
|---|---|---|
English Language | Error spotting, fill in the blanks, vocabulary | Long reading passages |
Logical Reasoning | Series, syllogism, input-output, coding-decoding | Multi-condition puzzles |
General Awareness | Banking terms, policy rates, housing schemes | Broad current affairs without notes |
Numerical Ability | Simplification, percentage, ratio, interest | Data interpretation sets, permutation and combination |
Computer Skill | Full forms, shortcuts, hardware and software basics | Networking protocols |
Quick-return topics are those where a few days of focused revision can lift your accuracy. Slow-return topics can still be worth attempting, but only after you have secured the easier marks in the same section.
Common mistakes while covering the syllabus
Treating Computer Skill as optional: It is a full 40-mark section in the Junior Assistant test, and most questions are direct.
Reading current affairs without notes: News that you do not write down is rarely recalled in the test. Keep short monthly notes.
Using the wrong exam material: A syllabus built for LIC AAO or ADO is deeper and different. Use it only for practice in common areas, not as your checklist.
Finishing the syllabus but never testing it: Coverage without timed practice does not show in the score. Move to tests early.
Interview and Document Verification
There is no syllabus for the interview or for document verification. The Junior Assistant selection included an interview for shortlisted candidates, and the apprentice process includes a personal interview with document verification on 15 November 2026. Prepare in these areas instead:
Your profile: Education, preferred city, and why you want to work in housing finance.
The company: What LIC HFL does and the basics of a home loan.
Documents: Original certificates, photo identity proof and the printout of your application, as the call letter instructs.
How to Cover the Syllabus
A phased plan keeps all five or four sections moving at once. The weeks below suit a candidate with about two months. If you have less time, compress each phase and keep the order.
Weeks 1 to 3, basics: Revise arithmetic formulas, grammar rules, reasoning patterns and computer fundamentals. Start a finance and housing finance notebook and read one business news item a day.
Weeks 4 to 6, topic practice: Take topic-wise practice sets for each section. Attempt topic tests, then review every wrong answer.
Weeks 7 and 8, sectional tests: Attempt 20 to 25 minute sectional tests, starting with your weakest section. Practise puzzles under a time limit.
Final phase, full mocks: Take full-length tests in the actual pattern, review the same day, and revise your error log.
Where to Check Official Updates
LIC HFL posts advertisements and corrections only on its own website, and the apprenticeship test is run through the BFSI Sector Skill Council. Read the current advertisement before you finalise your syllabus, and note any change in section names or timing. Older pages may still show LIC Assistant material, so follow the official notice.
