Rajasthan VDO Exam Pattern: Marks, Duration and Marking Scheme

The Rajasthan VDO exam pattern decides how you split three hours across eight subjects and how much risk you take on each question. The Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB) conducts the Gram Vikas Adhikari exam, and in the 2025 cycle (Advertisement 03/2025) it was a single offline objective paper of 160 questions for 200 marks.

That paper comes after the CET Graduation Level, which works as a screening test. This page explains every stage, the marking rules including the fifth option and negative marking, what the numbers mean for your strategy, and how to manage time on exam day. It also flags the OMR evaluation changes RSSB announced in 2026 that may apply to the next cycle.

Stage 1: CET Graduation Level

The Common Eligibility Test (CET) Graduation Level is a separate RSSB exam that screens candidates for several graduate-level posts, including Gram Vikas Adhikari. You must qualify it before you can apply for the VDO exam.

  • Which CET counts: The 2025 VDO cycle accepted the CET Graduation Level 2024. The next VDO notification will name the CET it accepts.

  • Qualifying score: RSSB fixes a minimum CET percentage. Reports on the 2026 CET put it at 40 percent for most categories and 35 percent for SC and ST candidates; confirm it in the CET notification.

  • CET score does not carry over: Your CET score is not added to your VDO marks. VDO merit is based only on the VDO written exam.

  • Next CET: CET Graduation Level 2026 is scheduled for 16 to 18 January 2027 (tentative, as per RSSB's revised schedule).

Stage 2: VDO Written Exam Pattern

The VDO written exam is one paper conducted offline on an OMR sheet. In 2025 it was held on 2 November 2025 in a single shift from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The subject marks and the totals of 160 questions and 200 marks are from the 2025 scheme. Subject-wise question counts are worked out at 1.25 marks per question, so treat them as indicative.

Key Features of the Paper

  • Mode: Offline, pen and paper, with an OMR answer sheet. Use the pen type the admit card specifies.

  • Options: Five options per question. Options A to D are answers; the fifth option is marked when you do not want to answer.

  • No sectional timing: You can move between sections freely within three hours.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

RSSB's OMR rules for objective papers set out the following, as applied in the 2025 exam.

Response

Effect

Correct answer

Full marks for that question (1.25 on the 2025 scale)

Wrong answer

One-third of that question's marks deducted

Fifth option marked (not attempted)

No marks, no deduction

No bubble filled at all

Treated as a deduction of one-third of that question's marks

More than 10 percent of questions with no bubble filled

Candidate can be disqualified

RSSB announced the fifth option and the 10 percent rule in a notice of 5 October 2023 and has applied them to its objective exams since then. Extra time, about 10 minutes, is usually given at the end to check that every question has one bubble filled. Always check the instructions printed on your admit card and question booklet, because they are the final word for your exam.

RSSB OMR Evaluation Changes in 2026

In March 2026, RSSB issued an amendment to its OMR evaluation system for direct recruitment exams. As reported, the main points are:

  • Single unit evaluation: The paper is evaluated as a whole rather than with section-wise weightage, so every question carries equal weight.

  • Negative marking stays: One-third of the marks of a question continues to be deducted for a wrong answer.

  • Applies forward: The change covers upcoming exams and exams whose results were pending at the time.

The 2025 VDO result was declared before this change. Check the next VDO notification and the RSSB notice board for the exact rules that will apply to your exam.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • One wrong answer cancels a third of a right one: Three wrong guesses wipe out the marks of one correct answer. Guess only when you can rule out at least two options.

  • Rajasthan GK is the core: Geography, economy, and history and culture together give 72 of the 160 questions. Weakness here is hard to make up elsewhere.

  • Languages are high-yield: Hindi and English give 40 questions that most candidates can answer quickly. Aim to finish them in about 30 minutes with high accuracy.

  • Cut-offs are very high: The 2025 Non-TSP General cut-off was 166.5399 out of 200, more than 83 percent. Accuracy matters more than attempting every question.

  • Do not leave bubbles empty: Every question needs either an answer or the fifth option. An empty bubble costs marks and, past 10 percent, your candidature.

Document Verification and Final Merit

After the written exam, RSSB publishes the result with category-wise cut-off marks and shortlists candidates for the next step.

  1. Application-cum-scrutiny form: Shortlisted candidates fill a detailed form online and upload documents. In 2025 this window was 22 to 28 December 2025.

  2. Document verification: Degree, computer certificate, CET scorecard, category, domicile and reservation certificates are checked.

  3. Final merit: The final list is prepared on written exam marks, category and district preference, separately for Non-TSP and TSP areas.

When two candidates have equal marks, the tie is broken by the rules in the notification, so read that clause when the next notification is out.

How to Practise for This Pattern

Knowing the pattern is useful only if your practice copies it. The 2025 paper rewarded candidates who were accurate across all eight subjects, so plan practice in three layers.

Sectional Practice

  • Short timed sets: Take 20 to 25 question sets for one subject at a time, timed at about one minute per question for GK and a little more for maths.

  • Track accuracy, not just score: Note how many questions you got wrong and why. Accuracy of about 90 percent is a useful target given the 2025 cut-offs.

Full-Length Practice

  • Same time slot: Take full papers from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the 2025 exam slot, so that your concentration peaks at the right time.

  • Use an OMR sheet: Practise filling bubbles, including the fifth option, so that marking does not slow you down on the day.

  • One full paper a week, then two: Increase frequency in the last six weeks, and analyse each paper on the same day.

Negative Marking Practice

For every mock, count three numbers: questions answered correctly, questions answered wrongly and questions marked with the fifth option. If your wrong answers are more than about one in eight attempts, you are guessing too much. Reduce attempts in your weakest section first and check whether your net score improves.

Attempt pattern (out of 160)

Correct

Wrong

Net marks on the 2025 scale

Careful attempt

135

10

168.75 minus 4.17 = 164.58

Aggressive attempt

138

22

172.50 minus 9.17 = 163.33

The example uses 1.25 marks per question and a deduction of one-third of that for each wrong answer. Three extra correct answers did not make up for twelve extra wrong ones.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

A Simple Order for the Paper

  1. Languages first: Hindi and English give quick, reliable marks and settle your nerves.

  2. Rajasthan GK next: Answer what you know confidently and mark doubtful questions in the booklet.

  3. General Knowledge and Computer: These are short and mostly direct recall.

  4. Mathematics last: Solve easy questions first and leave long calculations for the end.

  5. Final check: Use the last 10 minutes to confirm every question has one bubble, either an answer or the fifth option.

Exam-Day Checklist

  • Reach early: In 2025 candidates had to report well before the 9:00 AM gate closing time for an 11:00 AM paper. Follow the timing on your admit card.

  • Carry the right documents: Admit card and an original photo identity proof as listed on the admit card.

  • Fill the OMR carefully: Roll number, booklet series and question bubbles must be filled exactly as instructed.

Common Pattern Mistakes to Avoid

  • Preparing for a preliminary exam that no longer exists: Since the 2025 cycle, the CET does the screening. Prepare for the CET and the single VDO paper, not for a separate VDO preliminary.

  • Spending too long on maths: Maths is 30 marks, the same as each Rajasthan GK section. Do not let a few long questions eat into time for recall-based sections.

  • Forgetting the fifth option: Leaving bubbles empty costs marks and can lead to disqualification. Fill the fifth option for every question you skip.

  • Copying answers to the OMR at the end: Transfer answers section by section. Leaving all marking for the last few minutes leads to blank or wrong bubbles.

  • Relying on old pattern tables: Pages built for the 2021 cycle show different stages and papers. Check the year on any table you use.
