SSC CPO Exam Pattern 2026: Paper 1 & 2, Marking Scheme

The SSC CPO exam pattern for 2026 is the biggest overhaul this exam has seen in years. Paper 1 is now a one-hour, 100-question test with a 15-minute timer for each section. Paper 2 is no longer an English-only paper: it has 160 questions across four subjects, carries 320 marks and deducts 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.

This guide explains the complete SSC CPO exam pattern as published in the official SSC notice dated 10 September 2026. You will find paper-wise tables, worked scoring examples, qualifying marks in actual numbers, NCC bonus values and a practical plan for managing sectional time.

Key Features of Paper 1

  • Equal weight: Every subject carries exactly one quarter of the marks, so no section can be neglected.

  • Tight timing: You get about 36 seconds per question, and each part runs on its own clock.

  • Part-wise cut-offs possible: The notice allows SSC to fix separate cut-offs for each part of Paper 1, based on category-wise vacancies and candidates.

  • Screening role: Paper 1 marks shortlist you for the physical test, while final selection is based on Paper 2.

Key Features of Paper 2

  • Higher difficulty: The notice states that Paper 2 will be tougher than Paper 1.

  • English dominates: Part IV alone carries 200 of the 320 marks, or 62.5%.

  • More time per question in Parts I to III: 20 questions in 20 minutes gives you a full minute each, which suits multi-step problems.

  • Only for PST/PET qualifiers: You sit Paper 2 only after clearing the physical tests.

The penalty looks doubled in Paper 2, but it is still one quarter of the question's value, the same ratio as Paper 1. Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer in both papers.

Worked Scoring Examples

Paper 1: Suppose you attempt 84 questions and get 72 right and 12 wrong. Your score is 72 minus (12 x 0.25) = 72 minus 3 = 69 out of 100.

Paper 2: Suppose you attempt 140 questions and get 115 right and 25 wrong. Your score is (115 x 2) minus (25 x 0.50) = 230 minus 12.5 = 217.5 out of 320.

These are illustrations only. Actual cut-offs depend on vacancies, the number of candidates and paper difficulty.

SSC CPO Minimum Qualifying Marks

The notice sets minimum qualifying marks for both papers, calculated before any NCC bonus is added.

Reaching these marks only makes you eligible for consideration. The real cut-off for shortlisting is usually much higher, because it depends on competition.

NCC Bonus Marks in SSC CPO

Candidates holding an NCC certificate on the closing date of applications get bonus marks added to their normalised score in both papers.

Since Paper 2 decides final merit, a 'C' certificate adds a meaningful 16 marks to the score that ranks you.

Normalisation, Answer Key and Tie-Breaking Rules

  • Normalisation: If a paper runs in multiple shifts, SSC normalises scores using its published procedure. Normalised scores decide merit and cut-offs.

  • Answer key challenge: SSC publishes tentative answer keys after each paper. You can challenge a key online for Rs. 50 per question, which is non-refundable.

  • No re-evaluation: The notice rules out re-checking or re-evaluation of scores.

  • Tie-breaking: If candidates have equal aggregate marks, SSC breaks the tie by Paper 2 total, then Paper 2 English marks, then date of birth (older first), and finally alphabetical order of names.

How to Manage Sectional Timing

Time

36 seconds

Solve sure-shot questions first, then return to the rest

Paper 2: Reasoning, GK, Quant

20 minutes each

60 seconds

Use the extra time for accuracy on multi-step problems

Paper 2: English

Do grammar and vocabulary quickly to save time for passages

A two-pass method works well with fixed timers. In the first pass, answer everything you can solve quickly. In the second pass, attempt the remaining questions only if you can eliminate at least two options.

PST and PET in the SSC CPO Exam Pattern

The physical stage sits between Paper 1 and Paper 2. It carries no marks but eliminates candidates who fail.

The PST checks height, chest (men only) and weight. Ex-Servicemen are exempt from the PET but must clear the PST. For height and chest standards by post and category.

Is the Exam Pattern Different for SI (Fire) in CISF?

No. The 2026 notice prescribes one scheme of examination for all posts. SI (Fire) applicants take the same Paper 1, PST/PET, Paper 2 and medical examination as other candidates. What differs is eligibility: a science or engineering qualification, an age limit of 18 to 30 years, and slightly higher chest standards (81 cm unexpanded, 86 cm expanded for general category men). You will be considered for SI (Fire) only if you select it in your post preferences and meet its qualification.

Medical Examination and Document Verification

Candidates shortlisted on Paper 2 marks go through a Detailed Medical Examination. Anyone declared unfit gets a Review Medical Examination, usually the next day, and that decision is final. The CAPFs verify original documents, generally alongside the medical stage.

Exam Day Rules That Affect the Pattern

  • Centre choice: You pick three centres in order of preference, all within the same SSC region. Changes are not allowed later.

  • Admit card: The Admission Certificate is released on the SSC website 2 to 3 days before the exam. It is never sent by post.

  • Reporting time: Candidates who have not completed Aadhaar-based authentication must report two hours early with two photographs and an original photo ID showing their date of birth.

  • Exam city details: These appear on the regional office website about 10 days before the exam.

Preparation Tips for the New SSC CPO Exam Pattern

  • Train with section clocks: Practise every subject in fixed 15-minute and 20-minute blocks, not in open-ended sessions.

  • Prioritise English for Paper 2: Build reading speed early, because 100 questions in 60 minutes leaves no slack.

  • Track accuracy, not just attempts: With negative marking in both papers, a careful attempt with high accuracy often scores more than attempting every question.

  • Keep fitness on the calendar: The PET falls between the two papers, so physical training must run alongside written preparation.

The SSC CPO exam pattern for 2026 rewards speed in Paper 1 and depth in Paper 2. Paper 1 is a short, evenly weighted screening test, while Paper 2 decides your rank, with English carrying nearly two-thirds of its marks.

Learn the timing rules, practise under section clocks and protect your accuracy. For dates, vacancies and the full recruitment process.
