SSC MTS Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and More

SSC MTS eligibility is one of the most accessible among central government jobs. If you have passed Class 10 and fall within the age limit, you can apply. The details, however, decide whether your application survives document verification: which age group you fall into, the exact cut-off date, how relaxations are calculated, and, for Havaldar, the physical standards.

This guide covers the complete SSC MTS eligibility 2026 criteria: nationality, educational qualification, age limit for both age groups, category-wise age relaxation, Havaldar physical standards, application fee, required documents and the mistakes that most often lead to rejection.

SSC MTS 2026 Notification Status

The SSC examination calendar for 2026-27 listed 30 June 2026 for the SSC MTS notification. That date has passed, and the notification had not been released as of late September 2026. The SSC MTS eligibility rules below come from the 2025 notification. They have been largely stable across cycles, but the cut-off dates will change, so treat 2026 dates in this guide as expected, not final.

Nationality Requirement

To be eligible for SSC MTS, a candidate must be one of the following:

  • A citizen of India, or

  • A subject of Nepal, or

  • A subject of Bhutan, or

  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma (Myanmar), Sri Lanka, or the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia, or from Vietnam, with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates in any category other than Indian citizens need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. Such candidates may be allowed to take the exam provisionally, but the certificate must be produced before an appointment offer is made.

Educational Qualification for SSC MTS

The educational requirement is the same for MTS and Havaldar: you must have passed the Matriculation (Class 10) examination or an equivalent examination from a recognised board.

Point

What it means for you

Cut-off date

You must have passed on or before the cut-off date. In the 2025 cycle, this was 01-08-2025.

Result timing

If your result was declared on or before the cut-off date and you were declared passed, you meet the requirement, even if the marksheet reached you later.

Awaiting result

Candidates whose Class 10 result is declared after the cut-off date are not eligible for that cycle.

Equivalent qualification

You must produce an equivalence certificate at document verification. The final decision rests with the user department.

Higher qualification

Graduates and postgraduates can apply. Having a higher degree does not make you ineligible.

Since the notification uses your matriculation certificate as proof of date of birth, make sure your name and date of birth in the application match it exactly.

SSC MTS Age Limit 2026

Age is the part of SSC MTS eligibility where most candidates make mistakes. There are two age groups, and the one that applies to you depends on the post.

Age group

Posts covered

2025 cycle date of birth range (cut-off 01-08-2025)

Expected 2026 range (if cut-off is 01-08-2026)

18 to 25 years

Most MTS posts

Born between 02-08-2000 and 01-08-2007

Born between 02-08-2001 and 01-08-2008

18 to 27 years

Havaldar in CBIC and CBN, and a few MTS posts

Born between 02-08-1998 and 01-08-2007

Born between 02-08-1999 and 01-08-2008

The date of birth ranges above are for Unreserved candidates. Reserved categories add their age relaxation to the upper limit.

Why the age group matters

The two age groups have separate vacancies and separate cut-offs. In the 2025 cycle, SSC's revised vacancy notice listed the following split:

Post and age group

Vacancies (2025 cycle, revised)

MTS (18 to 25 years)

6,078

MTS (18 to 27 years)

732

Havaldar (CBIC and CBN)

1,138

Total

7,948

If you are between 25 and 27 years old (as an Unreserved candidate), you can only compete for the 18 to 27 posts. The number of such posts is much smaller, so the competition for each one is tougher. The 2026 vacancies will be announced in the new notification.

How to check your age

Calculate your age on the crucial date, not on the day you apply or on the exam date.

Example: A candidate born on 15 March 2001 was 24 years old on 01-08-2025, so they were eligible for both age groups in the 2025 cycle. If the 2026 cut-off is 01-08-2026, they will be 25 years and 4 months old. As an Unreserved candidate, they would then be eligible only for 18 to 27 posts. As an OBC candidate, with 3 years of relaxation, they would remain eligible for both groups.

SSC MTS Age Relaxation

The upper age limit is relaxed for the following categories, as per government rules followed in the 2025 notification.

Category

Age relaxation beyond the upper limit

SC and ST

5 years

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

PwBD (Unreserved and EWS)

10 years

PwBD (OBC)

13 years

PwBD (SC and ST)

15 years

Ex-Servicemen

3 years after deducting military service from actual age

Defence personnel disabled in operations during hostilities

3 years (OBC: 6 years; SC and ST: 8 years)

Central Government civilian employees with at least 3 years of regular, continuous service

Up to 40 years (OBC: 43 years; SC and ST: 45 years)

Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated who have not remarried

Up to 35 years (OBC: 38 years; SC and ST: 40 years)

EWS candidates do not get any age relaxation. Relaxations cannot be combined beyond what the rules allow, and each claim must be supported by the correct certificate at document verification.

Physical Standards for Havaldar

MTS posts have no physical tests. For Havaldar, however, SSC MTS eligibility also includes physical standards. Candidates considered for Havaldar in CBIC and CBN must clear the following standards.

Test

Male

Female

PET: walking

1,600 metres in 15 minutes

1 kilometre in 20 minutes

PST: height

157.5 cm

152 cm

PST: chest

76 cm unexpanded, with a minimum 5 cm expansion

Not applicable

PST: weight

Not applicable

48 kg

Relaxations apply to Garhwalis, Assamese, Gorkhas and members of Scheduled Tribes: 5 cm in height for men, 2.5 cm in height for women, and 2 kg in weight for women. The notification also lists limited PET/PST exemptions for certain PwBD categories. Candidates who fail PET/PST lose only the Havaldar option and stay in contention for MTS.

Application Fee

Category

Fee

Unreserved, OBC and EWS (men)

Rs. 100

Women (all categories)

Exempt

SC and ST

Exempt

PwBD

Exempt

Ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation

Exempt

In the 2025 cycle, the fee could be paid online through BHIM UPI, net banking or debit and credit cards. An application with an unpaid fee is treated as incomplete, so verify the payment status after paying.

Eligibility Notes for PwBD Candidates

The notification identifies which MTS posts are suitable for which categories of benchmark disability, so check the post-wise suitability before filling your preferences. Eligible candidates can use a scribe and get compensatory time, which in the 2025 cycle meant 60 minutes per session instead of 45.

Common SSC MTS Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the wrong date for age: Age is counted on the crucial date (1 August in recent cycles), not on the application or exam date.

  • Name or date of birth mismatch: Any difference between the application and your matriculation certificate can lead to rejection at document verification.

  • State-format OBC certificate: Central Government recruitment requires the OBC-NCL certificate in the Central Government format.

  • Applying while awaiting the Class 10 result: If the result comes after the cut-off date, you are not eligible for that cycle.

  • Ignoring the age-group split: If you are above 25 (as UR), you can only compete for 18 to 27 posts, so choose post preferences accordingly.

  • Assuming physical standards apply to all: PET and PST are required only for Havaldar. MTS candidates do not need them.

Quick Self-Check Before You Apply

Answer yes to all of these, and you meet the SSC MTS eligibility conditions and can apply once the notification is out:

  1. I am an Indian citizen or belong to one of the other eligible nationality categories.

  2. I passed Class 10 or an equivalent examination before the cut-off date.

  3. My age on the crucial date falls within 18 to 25 or 18 to 27 years, after any relaxation I can claim.

  4. I have my category, PwBD or ESM certificates in the correct format.

  5. If I want Havaldar, I meet the height, chest or weight standards and can complete the walking test.

Start Preparing While You Wait for the Notification

Eligibility is settled well before the exam, so there is no reason to wait for the notification to begin preparation. The CBE covers Maths, Reasoning, General Awareness and English at Class 10 level, and the syllabus has stayed stable across recent cycles.

SSC MTS eligibility 2026 comes down to three checks: nationality, a Class 10 pass before the cut-off date, and your age on the crucial date, plus physical standards if you want Havaldar. Work out your age group carefully, keep your certificates in the correct format, and watch ssc.gov.in for the 2026 notification.
