An SSC MTS mock test is only useful if it copies the real exam: two separate 45-minute sessions, 3 marks per question, no negative marking in Session I and a one-mark penalty in Session II. Many practice sets online still follow the old pattern, which can give you a false idea of your score.

Why Mock Tests Matter More in SSC MTS

  • Two sessions, two strategies. Session I rewards attempting every question, while Session II rewards careful selection. You can only learn to switch between them through timed practice.

  • Session II decides your rank. The final merit list uses normalised Session II marks only, so accuracy in General Awareness and English matters most.

  • Small margins decide selection. In the 2025 Havaldar results, a few marks separated candidates across regions, so every avoidable mistake counts.

  • Time pressure is real. You get about 67 seconds per question in Session I and 54 seconds in Session II.

What a Good SSC MTS Mock Test Must Match

Before you start a test series, check it against the current pattern.

Feature

Real SSC MTS exam

Session I

40 questions (Maths 20, Reasoning 20), 120 marks, 45 minutes

Session II

50 questions (General Awareness 25, English 25), 150 marks, 45 minutes

Marks per question

3

Negative marking

None in Session I; 1 mark per wrong answer in Session II

Time

Each session timed separately

Language

Hindi, English and 13 regional languages (English section in English)

If a mock uses 100 questions of 1 mark each with 0.25 negative marking, it follows the old pattern. Do not use its score to judge your preparation.

How Many Mock Tests Should You Take?

Quality of analysis matters more than the number of tests. A practical plan looks like this:

Phase

Mock test plan

While covering the syllabus

Topic-wise tests after each topic; one sectional test per subject each week

6 to 3 weeks before the exam

Two full-length mocks per week, plus sectional tests on weak subjects

Final 3 weeks

Three to four full-length mocks per week, plus previous year papers

Final 3 days

One light mock; revise your error notes

Around 20 to 25 full-length mocks, each properly reviewed, is enough for most candidates.

How to Analyse an SSC MTS Mock Test

Spend at least as much time reviewing a mock as you spent taking it.

  1. Check your Session I margin. Your Session I score should be well above the minimum qualifying marks (36 out of 120 for UR). If it is close, fix basic Maths and Reasoning first.

  2. Track your Session II score. This is your merit score. Compare it with past cut-offs for your preferred state or region.

  3. Count wrong answers in Session II. Each one costs a mark. If you have more than five or six wrong answers, you are guessing too much.

  4. Sort every mistake. Mark each error as a concept gap, a careless mistake or a guess. Fix the largest group first.

  5. Record time per section. If English regularly runs over time, practise reading comprehension and cloze tests separately.

Common Mock Test Mistakes

  • Using old-pattern mocks with 0.25 negative marking and 100 questions.

  • Guessing blindly in Session II. With four options, a blind guess gains nothing on average. Attempt only when you can rule out at least one option.

  • Ignoring Session I. It does not add to your rank, but failing it means your Session II is not evaluated.

  • Taking mocks without review. A mock you do not analyse teaches you very little.

  • Chasing one high score. Watch the trend over several mocks, not a single result.

Free vs Paid SSC MTS Mock Tests

Free mocks are good for a first diagnosis and for trying a platform. Paid test series usually offer more full-length tests, detailed solutions and performance analysis. Whichever you choose, apply the pattern checklist above and make sure solutions explain the method, not just the answer.
