UP Police Constable Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Physical Standards
Before you spend months preparing, it is worth confirming that you meet the UP Police Constable eligibility criteria. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) sets the rules for age, education, nationality and physical standards, and checks every one of them during document verification. A single mismatch at that stage can end your candidature even after a strong written score.
This page covers the rules applied in the latest cycle (Advt. No. 07/2025, 32,679 posts), including the one-time three-year age relaxation granted in January 2026. Age is counted as on 1 July 2025 for this cycle, so use that date for every calculation below.

Educational Qualification
You must have passed the Intermediate (Class 12) examination from a board established by law in India, or hold a qualification the Uttar Pradesh government recognises as equivalent. The stream does not matter. Arts, Science, Commerce and vocational Intermediate are all accepted.
Result must be declared by the closing date: Candidates who are still appearing in Class 12, or awaiting results, cannot apply. Your marksheet must exist by the last date of the application window.
No minimum percentage: A pass is enough. There is no cut-off percentage for Class 12.
Higher qualifications are fine: Graduates and postgraduates can apply, as long as they also meet the age limit.
Open schooling: Class 12 from an open board is accepted if the board is recognised by law. Keep the board's recognition details handy for document verification.
Candidates with two years of service in the Territorial Army, or with an NCC "B" or "C" certificate, are given preference in selection as set out in the notification. This is a preference, not a requirement.
Age Limit and Date of Birth Window
The standard upper age limit for constable recruitment is 22 years for men and 25 years for women. For the 2025 recruitment, the Uttar Pradesh government granted a one-time relaxation of three years in the upper age limit for candidates of all categories, through a Government Order dated 5 January 2026. This took the effective limits to 25 years for men and 28 years for women.
Age is counted as on 1 July 2025. The table below converts that into the date-of-birth window you must fall within.
Category | Men: Born Between | Women: Born Between | Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
General / EWS | 2 July 2000 and 1 July 2007 | 2 July 1997 and 1 July 2007 | Men 25, women 28 |
OBC (Uttar Pradesh) | 2 July 1995 and 1 July 2007 | 2 July 1992 and 1 July 2007 | Men 30, women 33 |
SC (Uttar Pradesh) | 2 July 1995 and 1 July 2007 | 2 July 1992 and 1 July 2007 | Men 30, women 33 |
ST (Uttar Pradesh) | 2 July 1995 and 1 July 2007 | 2 July 1992 and 1 July 2007 | Men 30, women 33 |
A quick example helps. A male OBC candidate from Uttar Pradesh born on 15 August 1995 is eligible, because he was born after 2 July 1995. A male General candidate with the same birth date is not eligible, because he was born before 2 July 2000.
The three-year relaxation was a one-time measure for this recruitment. Future cycles may go back to the standard limits of 22 and 25 years, so check the age clause in every new notification instead of assuming the same window.
Age Relaxation by Category
Category-based relaxation is added on top of the one-time three-year relaxation. It applies only to candidates who belong to Uttar Pradesh.
Category | Upper Age Relaxation |
|---|---|
SC of Uttar Pradesh | 5 years |
ST of Uttar Pradesh | 5 years |
OBC of Uttar Pradesh | 5 years |
EWS | No additional relaxation |
Ex-servicemen of Uttar Pradesh | Period of military service, subject to the limit in the notification |
Other notified categories (such as skilled sportspersons and certain state employees) | As specified in the notification |
Reserved candidates from other states: SC, ST or OBC candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh do not get reservation or category-based relaxation. They apply as General candidates.
Certificate format matters: Caste certificates must be issued in the format prescribed by the Uttar Pradesh government. OBC candidates must belong to the non-creamy layer.
Relaxation does not stack beyond the rules: You cannot combine two category relaxations to go above the limit allowed for your category.
Physical Eligibility: Height, Chest and Weight
Physical standards are checked during the Physical Standard Test (PST), which takes place along with document verification after the written result. These standards are fixed. Failing them disqualifies you regardless of your written score.
Candidate | Minimum Height | Chest | Minimum Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
Men: General, OBC, SC | 168 cm | 79 cm unexpanded, 84 cm expanded | Not prescribed |
Men: ST | 160 cm | 77 cm unexpanded, 82 cm expanded | Not prescribed |
Women: General, OBC, SC | 152 cm | Not applicable | 40 kg |
Women: ST | 147 cm | Not applicable | 40 kg |
Male candidates must show a chest expansion of at least 5 cm. Measure yourself honestly before applying. If you are close to the line, get measured by a sports coach or at a recruitment-preparation centre so you know where you stand.
Physical Efficiency Test Standards
The Physical Efficiency Test (PET) is a running test. It is qualifying in nature and adds no marks to your merit.
Candidate | Distance | Time Limit |
|---|---|---|
Men | 4.8 km | 25 minutes |
Women | 2.4 km | 14 minutes |
The PET is held months after the application window closes, but stamina takes time to build. Start running two or three times a week while you prepare for the written exam, rather than waiting for the result. For how the PET fits into the full selection process.
Nationality and Domicile
To apply, you must fall into one of these groups:
Citizen of India: The most common case.
Tibetan refugee: A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently.
Person of Indian origin: Someone who migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka or East African countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, intending to settle permanently in India.
Candidates in the last two groups need an eligibility certificate from the state government. Domicile of Uttar Pradesh is not needed to apply under the General category, but it is needed to claim reservation, age relaxation or any special category benefit of the state.
Who Is Not Eligible
Most rejections at document verification come from a small set of avoidable issues. You cannot proceed if any of these apply to you:
Age outside the window: Even one day outside the date-of-birth range makes you ineligible. Use the date on your Class 10 certificate, not any other document.
Class 12 result pending: Appearing candidates are not allowed for this post.
Physical standard not met: Height, chest or weight below the minimum leads to rejection at PST.
Wrong category claim: Claiming SC, ST or OBC status without a valid Uttar Pradesh certificate, or claiming OBC while in the creamy layer, cancels your candidature.
More than one living spouse: Under the service rules, a man with more than one living wife, or a woman married to a man who already has a living wife, is not eligible unless specifically exempted by the government.
Mismatch in details: If your name, date of birth or category in the application does not match your certificates, you can be disqualified at any stage.
Documents That Prove Your Eligibility
Each eligibility condition needs a matching document at verification. Keep originals and self-attested copies ready.
Condition | Document |
|---|---|
Age | Class 10 (High School) certificate |
Educational qualification | Class 12 (Intermediate) marksheet and certificate |
Category | Caste certificate in the Uttar Pradesh format; non-creamy layer certificate for OBC; EWS certificate for the relevant year |
Domicile | Domicile certificate of Uttar Pradesh, where a state benefit is claimed |
Special category | Ex-serviceman, freedom fighter dependent, Home Guard or sports certificates as applicable |
Preference | NCC "B" or "C" certificate, or Territorial Army service certificate |
Identity | Photo ID such as Aadhaar card |
Quick Self-Check Before You Apply
Run through these questions. If you can answer yes to all of them, you meet the core UP Police Constable eligibility rules.
Have I passed Class 12 from a recognised board, with the result already declared?
Does my date of birth fall inside the window for my category and gender?
If I am claiming SC, ST or OBC, do I belong to Uttar Pradesh and hold a certificate in the state format?
Do I meet the minimum height, and chest (for men) or weight (for women)?
Can I run, or realistically train to run, the required distance in time?
Do the details in my application match my certificates exactly?
Once eligibility is settled, the written exam decides your rank. You can practise with UP Police online tests on Testkart to get used to the 150-question format and track your sectional accuracy.
Eligibility rules, age windows and relaxations are confirmed only in the official notification for each cycle. Check the notices section of the UPPRPB official website before you apply, and read the complete UP Police exam guide for dates, syllabus and preparation tips.
