UP Police Syllabus 2026: Constable and SI Topic-wise Guide

The UP Police syllabus covers four subjects for both the Constable and Sub-Inspector (SI) written exams: General Knowledge, General Hindi, Numerical and Mental Ability, and Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) publishes the subject list and broad topics with each notification. The SI paper adds basic law and the Constitution to the knowledge section.

This guide turns those official subject heads into a working checklist for each post, shows where the Constable and SI papers overlap, and suggests where to start in each subject. The topic lists combine the notification syllabus with what has actually been asked in recent papers, so treat them as a study plan and confirm details in the latest notification.

The Constable paper is OMR based and carries 2 marks per question. The SI paper is an online test with 40 questions and 100 marks in each subject, and candidates must score at least 35% in every subject and 50% overall.

Key Changes to Know

  • Constable marking this cycle: The 2024 Constable exam deducted 0.5 marks per wrong answer. Reports on the 2025-26 notification say negative marking was not applied, which changes how freely you can attempt doubtful questions. Confirm the rule in each new notification.

  • SI paper is 160 questions: Some older pages still show a 200-question SI paper of 2.5 hours. The 2025 SI exam, held on 14 and 15 March 2026, had 160 questions in 2 hours.

  • New criminal laws for SI: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act from 1 July 2024. Study the new laws, but know the old section names too, since questions often link the two.

  • Cyber crime and social media: Recent Constable papers have kept these as regular GK topics, along with laws protecting women and children.

UP Police Constable Syllabus

Each subject carries roughly 37 to 38 questions in recent papers, so no section can be skipped. The table gives a quick start point for each, followed by the full topic list.

In recent Constable papers, UP GK, Hindi grammar and arithmetic have been the most reliable scoring areas. Police-related aptitude questions are mostly situation-based and reward common sense, so a few practice sets are usually enough to get used to the format.

UP Police SI Syllabus

The SI syllabus follows the same four-subject frame, but the questions are pitched at graduate level and the knowledge section includes law. Because each subject has a 35% sectional minimum, you need steady preparation in all four.

General Hindi

  • Grammar and vocabulary: Sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay, vilom, paryayvachi, tatsam-tadbhav and vakya shuddhi, at a deeper level than the Constable paper.

  • Literature: Hindi literary periods, major poets and writers, their works, and literary awards.

  • Usage and comprehension: Muhavare, lokoktiyan, letter-writing formats and unseen passages.

Basic Law, Constitution and General Knowledge

  • Constitution: Preamble, Fundamental Rights and Duties, Directive Principles, key amendments, Union and state government, and emergency provisions.

  • Criminal laws: Basics of BNS, BNSS and BSA, including arrest, FIR, bail, offences against the body and property, and evidence.

  • Special laws: Laws on SC/ST protection, protection of children from sexual offences, domestic violence, information technology and human rights.

  • General knowledge: Indian history, geography, economy, science, UP GK and current affairs.

Numerical and Mental Ability

  • Arithmetic: The same core topics as Constable, with more multi-step questions on percentage, interest, ratio, time and work, and mensuration.

  • Data interpretation: Tables, bar graphs and pie charts.

  • Mental ability: Coding, series, direction sense, logical diagrams and word formation.

Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning

  • Mental aptitude: Public interest, law and order, communal harmony, crime control, police system, gender sensitivity and sensitivity towards weaker sections.

  • IQ and reasoning: Analogies, classification, syllogism, statement and assumption, blood relations, seating arrangement, figure series and spatial ability.

Constable and SI Syllabus Overlap

Many aspirants prepare for both posts. Most of the work overlaps, so you can study once and add only the extra layer for SI.

Adds syllogism, arrangements and assumptions

Same base, add analytical topics for SI

Is There a Syllabus for PST and PET?

No. The Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET) have no written syllabus. PST checks height, chest (for men) and weight (for women) against fixed standards, and PET is a timed run: 4.8 km in 25 minutes for male candidates and 2.4 km in 14 minutes for female candidates in the Constable recruitment. Both stages are qualifying, so they do not add marks to your merit, but failing either ends your candidature.

Common Mistakes While Preparing the Syllabus

  • Treating Hindi as easy: Many aspirants skip grammar practice because Hindi is their first language, then lose marks on sandhi, samas and spelling questions that need exact rules.

  • Ignoring UP GK: National GK alone is not enough. A noticeable share of GK questions is about Uttar Pradesh, and these are easier to score once the basics are revised.

  • Reading current affairs without revising: Daily news reading helps only if you revise monthly notes before the exam. Without revision, most facts are forgotten by exam day.

  • Learning topics without timed practice: With about 48 seconds per question in the Constable paper, knowing a method is not enough. Speed comes only from regular timed sets.

  • Leaving physical preparation for later: PET follows the written result within a few months, and running stamina cannot be built in a few weeks.

How to Cover the UP Police Syllabus

A 14 to 16 week plan works for most aspirants who can give four to five hours a day. Shorten each phase if your exam is closer.

  1. Weeks 1 to 6, core concepts: Finish arithmetic topics one at a time, cover Hindi grammar chapter by chapter, and revise Class 6 to 10 science and social science for static GK.

  2. From week 3, current affairs habit: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day on news and keep short monthly notes. Add UP-specific schemes and events to a separate page.

  3. Weeks 5 to 10, reasoning and UP GK: Solve daily reasoning sets, finish UP history, geography and culture, and start topic-wise tests after each chapter. SI aspirants should begin the law notebook here.

  4. Weeks 9 to 12, sectional tests: Take timed tests for each subject and note which topics keep costing marks.

  5. Weeks 12 to 16, full-length papers: Attempt full papers in the real time limit, analyse each the same day, and revise from your error log rather than starting new topics.
