UPPSC Assistant Professor Eligibility 2026: Age and Qualification

UPPSC Assistant Professor eligibility decides whether you can apply for teaching posts in Government Degree Colleges of Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission sets these rules in Advertisement No. A-7/E-1/2025 for 1,253 Assistant Professor posts in 28 subjects, following the UGC Regulations, 2018 and the state's higher education service rules.

In short, you need a Master's degree with at least 55% marks in the relevant subject plus NET, SLET/SET or a qualifying Ph.D., and you must be 21 to 40 years old on 1 July 2025. This page explains each condition in detail, including the allied subjects UPPSC accepts, the 5% marks relaxation, the Ph.D. and foreign-degree routes, age relaxations for Uttar Pradesh candidates and the mistakes that get applications rejected.

UPPSC Assistant Professor Educational Qualification

For 24 subjects (Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Economics, Education, English, Geography, Hindi, History, Home Science, Mathematics, Military Science, Persian, Philosophy, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sanskrit, Sociology, Statistics, Urdu and Zoology), you can qualify through either Route A or Route B.

Route A: Master's Degree Plus NET, SET or Ph.D.

  1. Master's degree: A Master's with at least 55% marks, or an equivalent grade on a point scale, in the concerned, relevant or allied subject from an Indian university. An equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university is also accepted.

  2. NET or equivalent: You must also have cleared NET conducted by the UGC or CSIR, or a UGC-accredited test such as SLET/SET.

  3. Ph.D. instead of NET: Candidates who hold, or have been awarded, a Ph.D. under the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 are exempt from NET, SLET and SET.

Route B: Ph.D. from a Top-Ranked Foreign University

A Ph.D. from a foreign university or institution ranked among the top 500 in the world, at any time, by the QS ranking, the Times Higher Education ranking or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai) is accepted on its own.

Ph.D. Registered Before 11 July 2009

If you registered for your Ph.D. before 11 July 2009, you are exempt from NET only if all five conditions below are met:

  1. Regular mode: The Ph.D. was awarded in regular mode.

  2. External evaluation: The thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners.

  3. Open viva: An open Ph.D. viva voce was conducted.

  4. Publications: You published two research papers from your Ph.D. work, at least one in a refereed journal.

  5. Conference papers: You presented at least two papers from your Ph.D. work in conferences or seminars supported by the UGC, ICSSR, CSIR or a similar agency.

These conditions must be certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of your university. Get this certificate early, because universities can take weeks to issue it.

Subjects Where NET Is Not Conducted

NET, SLET or SET is not required for Master's programmes in disciplines for which the UGC, CSIR or an accredited state test does not conduct an exam. Check whether your exact Master's discipline has a NET paper before relying on this rule.

Minimum Marks and Relaxation

A minimum of 55% at the Master's level is the essential qualification for direct recruitment. The table shows when a lower percentage is accepted.

50%

5% relaxation for this group only

  • No grace marks: The 55% requirement and the 5% relaxation are applied only on qualifying marks, without counting any grace marks.

  • Grades are accepted: If your university follows a grading system, a grade it treats as equivalent to 55% is valid.

  • Do not count on rounding: The advertisement says nothing about rounding off, so a score such as 54.6% is risky. If you are close to the line, use the exact percentage on your marksheet or your university's official conversion.

Eligibility for Music and Drawing and Painting

For Drawing and Painting, Music (Vocal), Music (Sitar) and Music (Tabla), candidates can qualify through Route A (Master's with 55% plus NET, SET or Ph.D., as above) or through an artist route.

The artist route is open to a traditional or professional artist with highly commendable achievement in the subject who holds a Bachelor's degree and:

  • Training: Has studied under a noted or reputed traditional master or artist.

  • Recognition: Has been an 'A' grade artist of All India Radio or Doordarshan.

  • Explanation: Can explain the subject with logical reasoning.

  • Theory: Has adequate knowledge to teach theory with illustrations.

These posts are few (8 in Drawing and Painting and 14 across the three Music subjects in this cycle), so read the subject line in the advertisement carefully.

Allied Subjects Accepted by UPPSC

Your Master's must be in the concerned, relevant or allied subject. The advertisement lists which allied degrees count for each subject. Subjects not in this table accept only a Master's in the same subject.

If you fall into more than one category, you get only one concession, whichever is more beneficial. Relaxations do not add up.

Emergency or Short Service Commissioned Officers whose service has been extended for rehabilitation can also claim this relaxation, with a certificate from the competent authority and an undertaking to seek release if selected.

Domicile, Reservation and Certificates

  • Benefits are for UP domicile only: SC, ST, OBC, EWS, dependants of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen and PwD candidates who are not originally domiciled in Uttar Pradesh do not get reservation or age relaxation. They can still apply, but as unreserved candidates.

  • Women's reservation: The advertisement notes that, after an Allahabad High Court ruling, the state withdrew the provision that limited women's horizontal reservation to women domiciled in Uttar Pradesh. This remains subject to the final decision in the state's appeal, so check the current advertisement before relying on it.

  • Caste certificate for women: Only a caste certificate issued on the father's side is accepted.

  • EWS certificate: It must be issued for the financial year before the year of application.

  • Dependants of freedom fighters: This covers sons, daughters, grandsons (son's son or daughter's son) and granddaughters (son's daughter or daughter's daughter, married or unmarried), with a certificate from the District Magistrate.

  • PwD reservation: It applies only to posts identified for your disability sub-category, with a certificate from the prescribed medical authority countersigned by the Chief Medical Officer.

  • Declare it in OTR: Your category, sub-category, domicile and date of birth are taken from your One Time Registration. What you claim by the last date of correction is final, and changes are not accepted later.

Other UPPSC Assistant Professor Eligibility Conditions

  • Qualification by the last date: You must hold every required qualification by the last date of application. Candidates still appearing in the essential qualification exam are not eligible.

  • Marital status: A man with more than one living wife, or a woman married to a man who already has a living wife, is not eligible unless the Governor grants an exemption.

  • Ex-servicemen: Ex-Army personnel must be discharged by the last date of application.

  • Government employees: Candidates in Central or State government service must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer at the Mains stage.

  • Medical fitness: Selected candidates must pass a medical examination as required under the rules.

  • One-time registration: An OTR number from otr.pariksha.nic.in is compulsory, and it should be obtained at least 72 hours before you submit the online form.

The advertisement does not mention any limit on the number of attempts, so you can apply in every recruitment as long as you meet the age and qualification rules.

Preferential Qualifications

Other things being equal, preference is given to a candidate who has:

  • Territorial Army service: Served in the Territorial Army for at least two years.

  • NCC certificate: Obtained a 'B' certificate of the National Cadet Corps.

  • Co-curricular record: Shown high proficiency in debates, seminars, games and sports or other co-curricular activities.

You select Yes or No against each preferential qualification in Part 2 of the online form, so keep supporting certificates ready.

Who Is Not Eligible for UPPSC Assistant Professor?

  • Below 55% without a valid relaxation: For example, an unreserved candidate with 53% in the Master's, even with NET.

  • Master's without NET, SET or a qualifying Ph.D.: Unless your discipline has no NET paper or you fall under the foreign-Ph.D. or artist route.

  • Degree in an unlisted subject: For example, an M.A. in a subject that is neither the same as nor allied to the post.

  • Overage or underage candidates: Born before 2 July 1985 (without relaxation) or after 1 July 2004.

  • Result-awaited candidates: Those whose Master's or NET result came after the last date of application.

Furnishing wrong information can lead to debarment from UPPSC exams for up to five years, and submitting forged documents leads to permanent debarment and legal action.
