UPPSC Assistant Professor Exam Pattern 2026 and Marking Scheme
The UPPSC Assistant Professor exam pattern has three stages: an objective Prelims, a descriptive Mains and an interview. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission uses it for Advertisement No. A-7/E-1/2025, which covers 1,253 Assistant Professor posts in 28 subjects in Government Degree Colleges of Uttar Pradesh.
This cycle works differently from older UPPSC degree college recruitments. Prelims is now only a screening test, and final merit comes from the 200-mark Mains and the 25-mark interview. This page explains each stage, the negative marking rule, who gets shortlisted, the minimum marks you must clear and how your final score is calculated, with worked examples and a time plan for both papers.

UPPSC Assistant Professor Exam Pattern at a Glance
Stage | Format | Questions | Marks | Duration | Counted in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Prelims (screening) | Objective, OMR-based, one paper | 120 (30 GS + 90 subject) | 150 | 2 hours | No |
Mains (written) | Descriptive (conventional), one paper | 20 (10 short + 10 long) | 200 | 3 hours | Yes |
Interview | Personal interview | - | 25 | - | Yes |
Final merit | Mains + Interview | - | 225 | - | - |
The plan of examination is given in Appendix-2 of the official advertisement. For Mathematics, the subject part of Prelims has 70 questions instead of 90, so the Mathematics paper has 100 questions in total.
Key Changes to Know
A descriptive Mains is new: Earlier UPPSC degree college recruitments used a screening test followed by an interview. A-7/E-1/2025 adds a 200-mark written Mains, and that paper now decides most of your rank.
Prelims only opens the door: Prelims marks are used to shortlist candidates for Mains. They are not added to your final score.
Minimum marks apply at every written stage: The advertisement fixes a minimum efficiency standard of 40% (35% for SC and ST) in Prelims and Mains. Many candidates miss this rule.
Do not mix it with medical college posts: UPPSC's separate Medical Education recruitment (D-1/E-1/2026) has its own selection method, age limit and pay level. Its details do not apply to degree college posts.
UPPSC Assistant Professor Prelims Exam Pattern
The Prelims is a single objective paper with two parts. Part 1 is General Studies, common for every candidate. Part 2 is the subject you applied in. Each question has four options.
Part | Section | Questions | Marks (reported split) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Part 1 | General Studies | 30 | 60 | 2 hours (combined) |
Part 2 | Concerned subject | 90 (70 for Mathematics) | 90 | |
Total | - | 120 | 150 |
The advertisement fixes the total at 150 marks for 120 questions but does not spell out the marks for each part. The split of 60 marks for GS (2 marks a question) and 90 for the subject (1 mark a question) is the one reported from the question booklet and followed by most preparation material. For Mathematics, read the cover instructions of your booklet, because marks per question are not stated in the advertisement.
Important Points About Prelims
Mode: Offline, on an OMR answer sheet, at centres in various districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Single sitting: GS and the subject part are in one booklet, and the 2 hours are not divided between them. You decide how much time each part gets.
GS syllabus: General science, current events, history of India and the national movement, Indian polity and economy, Indian and world geography, and mental ability and statistical data analysis, with special reference to Uttar Pradesh.
Subject syllabus: Postgraduate level, usually in 10 units.
UPPSC Assistant Professor Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Negative marking applies only to the objective Prelims. The rule in the advertisement is clear and is often misreported, so read it closely.
Your response | Effect on score |
|---|---|
Correct answer | Full marks for that question |
Wrong answer | One-third (0.33) of the marks of that question deducted |
More than one option marked | Treated as wrong, with the same one-third penalty, even if one option is correct |
Question left blank | No penalty |
Because the penalty is a fraction of each question's marks, a wrong answer costs more in GS than in the subject part. On the reported split, a wrong GS answer costs about 0.67 marks, while a wrong subject answer costs about 0.33 marks. Pages that show a flat +1.25 per question or a 0.25 deduction do not match the official rule.
When Is a Guess Worth It?
With four options and a one-third penalty, a blind guess is roughly break-even over many questions, so it adds risk without adding marks. Once you can rule out even one option, the odds move in your favour. If you can narrow a question to two options, attempting it is usually worth it.
There is no negative marking in the Mains or the interview.
Who Qualifies for the UPPSC Assistant Professor Mains?
As per the advertisement, candidates equal to fifteen times the number of vacancies are declared successful in Prelims for Mains. Shortlisting is done subject-wise and category-wise, so a subject with 60 posts can send up to about 900 candidates to Mains, split across categories.
Minimum Efficiency Standard
Category | Minimum marks | In Prelims (out of 150) | In Mains (out of 200) |
|---|---|---|---|
SC and ST | 35% | 52.5 | 70 |
All other categories | 40% | 60 | 80 |
Candidates who score below this standard in the Prelims or the Mains are treated as disqualified and cannot be placed in the merit or select list. In practice, the 15-times line is often well above this minimum, but the rule matters in subjects with few applicants.
A reserved-category candidate is adjusted against an unreserved post in the final selection only if he or she has not taken any concession in the qualifying standard at any stage of Prelims or Mains.
Mains Application and Fee
Qualified candidates must fill a separate Mains application form and appear with the same roll number allotted for Prelims.
Category | Exam fee | Online processing fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
Unreserved, EWS, OBC and candidates of other states | Rs. 200 | Rs. 25 | Rs. 225 |
SC and ST of Uttar Pradesh | Rs. 80 | Rs. 25 | Rs. 105 |
Ex-Army personnel of Uttar Pradesh | Rs. 80 | Rs. 25 | Rs. 105 |
Persons with disabilities of Uttar Pradesh | Nil | Rs. 25 | Rs. 25 |
Dependants of freedom fighters, women and skilled players pay as per their original category. Candidates already in Central or State government service must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer with the Mains form.
UPPSC Assistant Professor Mains Exam Pattern
The Mains is a single descriptive paper in your subject. All 20 questions are compulsory, and the paper is divided into two sections.
Section | Type of question | Questions | Word limit | Marks each | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Section A | Short answer | 10 | 125 words | 8 | 80 |
Section B | Long answer | 10 | 200 words | 12 | 120 |
Total | - | 20 | - | - | 200 |
The paper lasts 3 hours. There is no General Studies paper in Mains, and there are no optional questions to choose from. Every unit of your subject syllabus can appear, so selective study is risky.
What Each Section Tests
Section A (125 words): Definitions, short notes, a theory or thinker in brief, a formula with its use, or the difference between two concepts. Precision matters more than length.
Section B (200 words): "Explain", "discuss" or "critically examine" questions that need an introduction, two or three developed points with examples, and a short conclusion. Diagrams, derivations and flowcharts help in science, geography and economics.
For the 2025 cycle, the Mains was held subject-wise from 15 September to 1 October 2026, in a 9:30 am to 12:30 pm slot.
UPPSC Assistant Professor Interview
Candidates who clear Mains are called for an interview of 25 marks, as per government orders. There is no fixed syllabus. Boards usually ask about your subject, your dissertation or Ph.D. work, how you would teach a core topic to undergraduates, and current developments in higher education. Keep your original certificates and self-attested copies ready. If you cannot produce the required documents at verification within the time UPPSC allows, your candidature is cancelled.
How Final Merit Is Calculated
Final merit is decided by adding your Mains marks and interview marks. Prelims marks are not included.
Component | Maximum marks | Example: Candidate A | Example: Candidate B |
|---|---|---|---|
Mains | 200 | 128 | 121 |
Interview | 25 | 15 | 21 |
Final score | 225 | 143 | 142 |
In this example, Candidate B does better in the interview by 6 marks, but Candidate A still ranks higher because of a 7-mark lead in Mains. Mains carries about 89% of the merit marks, which is why it should get most of your preparation time.
What the UPPSC Assistant Professor Exam Pattern Means for You
Treat Prelims as a gate: You need a safe score above your subject's shortlisting line, not a top rank. Accuracy matters more than attempting every question.
Do not skip GS: On the reported split, 30 GS questions carry 40% of Prelims marks. A weak GS score can keep a strong subject candidate out of Mains.
Study the subject once, practise it twice: The same subject syllabus is tested as MCQs in Prelims and as written answers in Mains. Build notes that work for both.
Start answer writing early: Twenty compulsory questions in 3 hours leave little room to think from scratch. Regular writing practice is what separates Mains scores.
Time Management for UPPSC Assistant Professor Prelims and Mains
Prelims: 120 Questions in 120 Minutes
Step | Suggested time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Subject part, first round | 60 to 65 minutes | Answer every question you are sure of; mark doubtful ones |
GS part | 25 to 30 minutes | Attempt carefully, since each wrong answer costs more here |
Second round on marked questions | 15 to 20 minutes | Attempt only where you can eliminate at least one option |
OMR check | 5 to 10 minutes | Confirm every bubble is filled in the right row |
Some candidates prefer to start with GS because it is shorter. Either order works, as long as you fix it in mock tests and do not change it on exam day.
Mains: 20 Questions in 180 Minutes
Section | Questions | Time per question | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
Section A (8 marks) | 10 | About 6 minutes | 60 minutes |
Section B (12 marks) | 10 | About 10 to 11 minutes | 105 minutes |
Reading and review | - | - | 15 minutes |
Total | 20 | - | 180 minutes |
Never leave a question blank in Mains. A brief, structured answer to every question usually scores more than a few perfect answers and several empty pages.
Exam-Day Rules to Remember
Use only a black ball point pen on the OMR sheet: Any other pen or pencil is not allowed, and whitener, blade or eraser use can make your sheet invalid.
Keep your OMR copy: The answer sheet has three copies. The candidate keeps the third (blue) copy, which helps you check your responses against the answer key.
Centre cannot be changed: You must appear at the centre shown on your e-admit card.
Unfair means are penalised: The advertisement applies Uttar Pradesh's Prevention of Unfair Means Act, 2024, and copying, misbehaviour or canvassing can lead to debarment from this and future UPPSC exams.
