UPPSC Assistant Professor Syllabus: GS and Subject-Wise Guide
The UPPSC Assistant Professor syllabus has two parts: a common General Studies paper for every candidate and a subject syllabus for the discipline you applied in. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission uses it for Advertisement No. A-7/E-1/2025, which covers 1,253 Assistant Professor posts in 28 subjects in Government Degree Colleges.
UPPSC publishes a separate syllabus PDF for each subject, usually in 10 units at postgraduate level. The General Studies part is listed only as broad headings. The topic lists on this page summarise the official subject syllabi and expand the GS headings using the questions UPPSC typically asks, so use them as a working checklist and keep your subject PDF from the UPPSC website as the final reference. You will also find how Prelims and Mains share the syllabus, what to start with and a phased plan.

Key Points to Know Before You Start
One subject syllabus, two formats: The same 10 units are tested as MCQs in Prelims and as written answers in Mains. You study the content once and practise it in two ways.
GS appears only in Prelims: General Studies is not part of Mains or final merit. It still matters, because each GS question is worth 2 marks and the section makes up 40% of the Prelims score.
UGC-NET level, not undergraduate level: Subject syllabi match the depth of UGC-NET Paper 2 and a standard Master's course. Undergraduate textbooks alone will not be enough.
New for this cycle: The descriptive Mains is new in A-7/E-1/2025. Older pages may still describe a screening test followed only by an interview, so follow the current advertisement.
Mathematics differs slightly: The Mathematics subject part is reported to have 70 questions instead of 90. Check your admit card instructions for the exact marking.

Subject Syllabus: Structure and Subject List
Each subject syllabus is a separate PDF. Most are divided into 10 units, and both Prelims Part 2 and Mains are set from the same units. The 28 subjects in this recruitment fall into five groups:

In science subjects, the theory-heavy units, such as quantum mechanics in Physics or reaction mechanisms in Chemistry, usually supply the most Mains questions. Build those first.
Social Science and Commerce Syllabus
Subject | Main unit areas |

Commerce has the most posts in this recruitment, which also tends to mean more applicants. Accounting and financial management usually give the most numerical MCQs, while marketing, HRM and business environment suit long Mains answers.
Language Subjects Syllabus
Subject | Main unit areas |
|---|---|
English (92 posts) | British literature from Chaucer to the present, American and other literatures in English, Indian writing in English, literary theory and criticism, cultural studies, language and linguistics, research methods |

Urdu and Persian | History of the language and literature, classical and modern poetry and prose, criticism, prescribed authors |
Language papers depend heavily on named texts, authors and movements. Make a chronological chart of periods and writers early, because many MCQs test matching and sequence.
Other Subjects
Physical Education, Home Science, Philosophy, Military Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Drawing and Painting and the three Music subjects each have their own syllabus PDF. These subjects have fewer posts, so a single category may have only one or two seats. Read your PDF carefully, because practical and performance-based subjects can include theory units on history, aesthetics and methods that candidates often underestimate.
UPPSC Assistant Professor Mains Syllabus and Answer Writing
Mains has no separate syllabus. It tests the same 10 units in descriptive form, with 10 short answers of about 125 words (8 marks each) and 10 long answers of about 200 words (12 marks each).
Short answers test definitions and clarity: Expect concepts, thinkers, formulas, short notes and distinctions between two ideas.
Long answers test depth: Expect "explain", "critically examine" and "discuss" questions that need structure, examples and a short conclusion.
Diagrams and derivations help: In science, geography and economics, a labelled diagram or a clean derivation often earns marks faster than extra words.
Prelims and Mains Overlap: How to Plan
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
Subject units 1 to 10 | 90 MCQs, 90 marks | 20 questions, 200 marks | Study once in depth; practise MCQs and written answers side by side |
General Studies | 30 MCQs, 60 marks | Not tested | Daily 30 to 40 minutes until Prelims, then pause |
Facts, names and dates | Essential for MCQs | Used as supporting points | Keep a one-page fact sheet per unit |
Concepts and theories | Tested through application MCQs | Core of long answers | Write a 200-word note on every major theory |
Is There a Syllabus for the Interview?
No. UPPSC does not publish a syllabus for the 25-mark interview. Boards usually ask about your subject, your research or dissertation, how you would teach a core topic to undergraduates, higher education policy and current developments in your field. Revise your Master's and Ph.D. work and prepare a clear answer on why you want to teach in a government college.
How to Cover the UPPSC Assistant Professor Syllabus
Weeks 1 to 8, subject foundation: Cover the high-weight units of your subject using standard postgraduate books. Start daily GS reading and current affairs from week one.
Weeks 9 to 14, complete the syllabus: Finish the remaining units and all six GS areas. After each unit, solve previous year questions and write two short answers.
Weeks 15 to 18, Prelims mode: Take unit-wise tests and full-length timed mocks. Track accuracy under negative marking and note recurring mistakes in an error log.
After Prelims, Mains mode: Drop GS and write full 3-hour answer papers every week. Revise from your unit fact sheets and error log.
