VIT Engineering Entrance Examination
Entrance exam for Vellore Institute of Technology
VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Examination) is the entrance test that Vellore Institute of Technology uses for B.Tech admission to its four campuses: VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT-AP (Amaravati) and VIT Bhopal. It is a computer-based test held in slots over several days, and your rank in it decides which campus, branch and fee category you can choose in counselling.
As of October 2026, VIT has not released the VITEEE 2027 notification or prospectus. This page is built on the official VITEEE 2026 rules, and every 2027 date below is marked tentative until VIT confirms it. The most important change to know is the marking scheme: from the 2026 cycle, VITEEE awards +4 for a correct answer and deducts 1 for a wrong one, so older pages that describe "no negative marking" are out of date.

VITEEE 2027 Notification: What to Expect
VIT usually opens VITEEE applications several months before the April exam window and publishes a prospectus with dates, test cities, programmes and fee details. For the 2027 cycle, none of this is out yet. Until it is, use the 2026 schedule below as a guide to timing, not as fixed dates.
Watch for the prospectus: It confirms eligibility dates, programme lists per campus and test cities for the year.
Expect the 2026 pattern to carry over: The +4/-1 scheme was introduced in 2026. Any further change will be announced in the 2027 prospectus.
Programme lists change: VIT adds new specialisations most years, so check the campus-wise list before you plan your counselling choices.

VITEEE Eligibility
Educational Qualification
You must have passed, or be appearing in, Class 12 or an equivalent exam in the admission year. The 2026 rules ask for a minimum aggregate in the relevant subjects:
PCM stream: At least 60% aggregate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with at least 50% in Mathematics.
PCB stream: At least 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with at least 50% in Biology. PCB students can apply only for a short list of biology-linked programmes.
Relaxed aggregate: SC/ST candidates and candidates from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and the North-Eastern states need at least 50% aggregate in the relevant subjects.
Age Limit
For VITEEE 2026, candidates had to be born on or after 1 July 2004. VIT has not yet published the cut-off date for 2027; it will appear in the 2027 prospectus.
Nationality
Resident Indians, Non-Resident Indians, and OCI or PIO card holders can apply. For the full rules, programmes open to PCB students and common disqualifiers, read the VITEEE eligibility criteria page.
Application Fee and How to Apply
Category | Fee (VITEEE 2026) |
|---|---|
Test centres in India | Rs. 1,350 |
Test centres abroad | Equivalent of USD 90 in INR |
The fee is non-refundable and covers the application and the counselling process that follows. The 2027 fee will be confirmed in the 2027 prospectus.
Register: Create an account on the official VITEEE application portal with a working email and mobile number.
Fill the form: Enter personal and academic details, choose the MPCEA (Maths) or BPCEA (Biology) paper, and pick your test city.
Upload documents: Add your photograph and signature in the format the portal asks for.
Pay the fee: Pay online and keep the confirmation.
Book your slot: When the Online Test Booking System opens, book your exam date and time. Slots are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Download the admit card: It is available after slot booking.
Common problems to avoid: the test city cannot be changed after you submit the form, a booked slot cannot be changed, and VIT does not refund candidates who miss slot booking. Book early so you get a date that suits your board exam schedule.
VITEEE Exam Pattern
Section | Questions | Maximum marks |
|---|---|---|
Mathematics or Biology | 40 | 160 |
Physics | 35 | 140 |
Chemistry | 35 | 140 |
Aptitude | 10 | 40 |
English | 5 | 20 |
Total | 125 | 500 |
Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer costs 1 mark. Unanswered questions and questions left marked for review score zero. The paper lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and is in English only.
What this means for you:
Accuracy now counts: Under the old +1 scheme, guessing was free. Now four wrong guesses cancel one correct answer, so skip questions you cannot narrow down.
Maths or Biology carries the most weight: 40 of 125 questions, so it deserves the largest share of your preparation time.
Do not ignore Aptitude and English: Together they are 15 questions and 60 marks, and they are usually quicker to score than numerical Physics.
Older pages may still show the +1, no-negative-marking scheme, so follow the official VITEEE page.
VITEEE Syllabus Summary
VIT publishes a unit-wise syllabus for each subject, broadly aligned with the Class 11 and 12 curriculum.
Subject | Units | Important topics |
|---|---|---|
Mathematics | 10 | Matrices, complex numbers, conics, 3D geometry, calculus, differential equations, probability, discrete mathematics |
Physics | 7 | Mechanics, electrostatics, current electricity and magnetism, EMI and AC, optics, modern physics, semiconductors |
Chemistry | 7 | Physical, inorganic, analytical and organic chemistry, biomolecules and polymers |
Biology | 10 | Cell and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, biotechnology, ecology |
Aptitude | 5 | Data interpretation, data sufficiency, syllogism, series and coding, clocks, calendars and directions |
English | Scope only | Short passage or poem comprehension, grammar, pronunciation |
The official 2026 Mathematics syllabus is on the VIT website.
Selection Process
Computer-based test: You take VITEEE in the slot you booked.
Result and rank: VIT publishes your rank on the results portal. There is no separate interview or second stage.
Online counselling: Candidates are called in phases by rank range. You choose a campus, programme and fee category, and seats are allotted by rank and availability.
Fee payment and reporting: You pay the advance fee to accept the seat, then complete the balance fee and document checks before joining.
After allotment, VIT does not allow changes of branch, campus or fee category, so fill choices carefully.
Campuses, Fee Categories and Scholarships
VIT has four campuses that admit through VITEEE: Vellore (Tamil Nadu), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), VIT-AP at Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh) and VIT Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). Each offers its own list of B.Tech programmes.
VIT uses fee categories (Category 1 to Category 5). Category 1 has the lowest tuition and the fewest seats, so it fills at the highest ranks. A candidate with a lower rank may still get a preferred branch by choosing a higher fee category. Fee amounts change by year, campus and programme group, so check the fee structure linked from the official VITEEE page before counselling.
VIT also runs scholarship schemes. The official site describes STARS, a full fee waiver for district toppers from rural government schools in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Rank-based tuition waivers for top VITEEE rankers have been reported in previous cycles; confirm the current terms in the 2027 prospectus.
How to Prepare for VITEEE
Build on your board syllabus: VITEEE topics overlap heavily with Class 11 and 12, so your board preparation and VITEEE preparation can run together.
Prioritise speed with accuracy: 125 questions in 150 minutes gives you about 72 seconds per question. Practise short methods in Maths and Physics.
Treat Aptitude as a scoring section: Data interpretation, syllogism and clocks and calendars respond well to regular short practice.
Train for negative marking: Track how many wrong answers you make per mock and set a limit you will not cross.
Mock Tests
Start full-length mocks about two to three months before your slot, and take sectional tests earlier. VIT offers an official mock test on its site close to the exam. For more timed practice in the +4/-1 pattern, you can attempt VITEEE mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see where marks are slipping. Pair them with VITEEE study notes for quick revision of formulas and reactions.
VITEEE Cut-off Reference
VIT does not publish a qualifying cut-off score for VITEEE. What matters is your rank and the campus, branch and fee category still open when your counselling phase begins. In 2026, as reported, Phase 1 covered ranks 1 to 20,000, and candidates above rank 1,00,000 were called in the final phase. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of applicants, so treat previous ranks as a benchmark only. For official updates, rely on viteee.vit.ac.in.
