VITEEE 2027 Exam Pattern: Marking Scheme, Sections and Strategy
The VITEEE exam pattern is a single computer-based test of 125 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Vellore Institute of Technology uses it for B.Tech admission to its Vellore, Chennai, AP and Bhopal campuses. There is one stage only: your score gives you a rank, and that rank decides your counselling options.
VIT has not yet published the VITEEE 2027 prospectus, so the pattern below is the official 2026 pattern, which is expected to continue unless VIT announces a change. The big shift came in 2026, when VIT moved from 1 mark per question with no penalty to +4 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong one. This page explains the section split, the marking scheme, what the numbers mean for your time and guessing strategy, and how to plan exam day.

Key Changes to Know
Negative marking from 2026: Each wrong answer now costs 1 mark. Earlier cycles awarded 1 mark per correct answer with no deduction.
Maximum marks rose from 125 to 500: The number of questions did not change, only the marks per question.
Marked for review scores zero: A question you mark for review without a final answer is treated as unanswered.
Older pages may still show 125 maximum marks and no negative marking, so follow the official VITEEE page and the 2027 prospectus once it is out.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Response | Marks |
|---|---|
Correct answer | +4 |
Wrong answer | -1 |
Not answered | 0 |
Marked for review (no final answer) | 0 |
Blank answers are not penalised. Only an attempted wrong answer costs a mark.
What the Pattern Means for You
Time per question is tight: 150 minutes for 125 questions is about 72 seconds each. Long Maths or Physics calculations need to be balanced against quick Chemistry theory, Aptitude and English questions.
Blind guesses add risk, educated guesses add marks: With four options, a pure blind guess averages only +0.25 marks and is wrong three times out of four. Rule out one option and the average rises to about +0.67 per guess; rule out two and it is +1.5. Guess when you can eliminate, skip when you cannot.
Accuracy beats attempts: 100 attempts with 85 correct gives 325 marks (340 minus 15). 90 attempts with 85 correct gives 335. Fewer wrong answers raise your score even with the same number correct.
Maths or Biology decides rank bands: At 160 marks, this section has the largest spread between strong and weak candidates. Small gains here move your rank most.
Aptitude and English are fast marks: 15 questions worth 60 marks, usually quicker than numericals. Do not leave them for the last few minutes.
How Your Rank Is Decided
Your score out of 500 is used to rank you against all candidates. Since VITEEE is held across many slots, check the 2027 prospectus for any statement on normalisation or tie-breaking; VIT has not published a detailed method on its main VITEEE page. Your rank, not your score, decides which counselling phase you join and which campus, branch and fee category are still open. See the VITEEE cutoff page for how ranks have mapped to seats in previous years.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Suggested time split
Section | Questions | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|
English | 5 | 5 minutes |
Aptitude | 10 | 12 minutes |
Chemistry | 35 | 35 minutes |
Physics | 35 | 43 minutes |
Mathematics or Biology | 40 | 45 minutes |
Review | - | 10 minutes |
Total | 125 | 150 minutes |
This is a starting point, not a rule. Adjust it after your first few full-length mocks based on where you are fastest.
On exam day
Do a first pass for sure answers: Answer what you know at once and skip anything that needs more than two minutes.
Use a second pass for the skipped questions: Return only to those where you can eliminate options.
Watch the marked-for-review list: Questions left only marked for review score zero, so finalise or leave them consciously.
Keep the last 10 minutes for review: Check for misread units and signs in numerical answers.
