CBSE Class 9 Passing Marks 2026-27: Promotion Criteria and Grades

There is no rank-based cut-off in CBSE Class 9. It is a school examination, not a competitive or selection exam, so you are not ranked against other students and there is no fixed number of seats. What matters is the passing criteria: the minimum marks you need in each subject to be declared successful and promoted to Class 10.

This page explains the CBSE Class 9 passing marks for 2026-27, how internal assessment counts, the grade bands, the special rules for the third language and the Advanced Level, and how to set a sensible target above the bare minimum.

CBSE's curriculum states that a student must secure at least 33% marks separately in external and internal assessments, and must appear in and complete both components. The whole-number minimums above are a working guide; your school applies its own rounding, so confirm with your teachers.

Why there is no cut-off in Class 9

  • Absolute, not relative: Class 9 uses absolute grading. Your grade depends only on your own marks, not on how others perform.

  • No selection: Everyone who meets the passing criteria is promoted. There is no merit list or seat limit.

  • School-level result: Your school conducts the annual exam and declares the result, following CBSE's scheme.

Older pages sometimes describe a "Class 9 cut-off". In practice this only means the 33% pass mark.

Special rules for 2026-27

Third language (R3)

R3 is assessed entirely by the school. Under CBSE Circular Acad-49/2026, a Class 9 student who does not clear R3 is still promoted to Class 10 but must clear it there, before the Class 10 result is declared. Clearing R3 is needed for the Secondary School pass certificate.

Advanced Level

The Advanced Level in Mathematics or Science does not affect promotion. At the Class 10 board stage, scoring 50% or more in the 25-mark advanced paper is noted on the marksheet as cleared, and the marks are not added to the aggregate.

What if a student does not pass?

CBSE's curriculum sets the 33% rule but does not lay down a separate re-examination procedure for Class 9 main subjects. Promotion decisions, any re-test and remedial support are handled by the school under its policy. If your child is at risk, speak to the class teacher early in the year, when internal marks can still be improved.

How to set your target

  • Aim well above 33%: A pass is the floor. Aim for at least 60% to 70% in each subject so that Class 10 starts from a strong base.

  • Protect internal marks: With 20 internal marks and a separate 33% rule, a missed project can cost more than a hard question.

  • Use mock scores as a benchmark: If your timed practice papers are consistently 10 to 15 marks above your target, you have a safe margin.

  • Fix weak chapters early: Geometry and Algebra in Mathematics and the World of Living unit in Science carry the most marks.

Official rules are in the CBSE curriculum 2026-27.
