CBSE Class 9 Exam Pattern 2026-27: Marks, Internal Assessment and Grading
The CBSE Class 9 exam pattern 2026-27 combines a school-conducted annual examination with internal assessment spread across the year. CBSE sets the scheme in its secondary curriculum, but your own school sets the papers, conducts the exams and declares the result. There is no CBSE board exam in Class 9.
This page sets out the marks split for each main subject, how the 20 internal marks are earned, the question typology in Mathematics, Science and English, how the optional Advanced Level and the third language are assessed, and the grading scale.
CBSE Class 9 exam pattern
Component | Format | Marks | Duration | Conducted by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Annual examination (main subjects) | Written paper | 80 | 3 hours | School |
Internal assessment (main subjects) | Tests, activities, portfolio, practicals | 20 | Through the year | School |
Third language (R3) | School-based assessment only | As set by the school | Through the year | School |
Advanced Level (Mathematics or Science) | Additional paper at the Class 10 board stage | 25 | 1 hour | CBSE (Class 10, from 2027-28) |
Total per main subject | 100 |
Key changes to know
Same 80 plus 20 split, new content: The marks split per subject is unchanged, but the papers now follow the new NCERT textbooks.
Four equal internal components: Periodic assessment, multiple assessment, portfolio and subject enrichment each carry 5 marks in most subjects.
Third language is school-assessed: R3 has no board-style paper, and the school assesses it internally.
Advanced Level is extra: It does not replace the standard paper and does not count in the aggregate.
Older pages may still describe the earlier pattern with two languages and old chapter weightage, so follow the 2026-27 curriculum.
Internal assessment: how the 20 marks are earned
Component | What it involves | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Periodic assessment | Three pen-and-paper tests in the year; the average of the best two counts | 5 |
Multiple assessment | Quizzes, oral work, presentations, debates, projects and observation | 5 |
Portfolio | Classwork, reflections, journals and best work, marked against rubrics | 5 |
Subject enrichment | Science practicals, Mathematics lab activities, language projects, Social Science project work | 5 |
Total | 20 |
Mathematics groups these slightly differently: pen-and-paper test and multiple assessment (10), portfolio (5) and lab practical (5).
Question typology by subject
Mathematics (80 marks, 3 hours)
Typology | Marks | Approximate weightage |
|---|---|---|
Remembering and understanding | 43 | 54% |
Applying | 19 | 24% |
Analysing, evaluating and creating | 18 | 22% |
Total | 80 | 100% |
Science (80 marks, 3 hours)
Competency | Weightage |
|---|---|
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding | 50% |
Application of knowledge and concepts | 30% |
Formulate, analyse, evaluate and create | 20% |
Science papers use very short answers (including objective and assertion-reason items), short answers, long answers and source-based or case-based questions, with internal choice in about 33% of questions.
English (80 marks)
Reading carries 20 marks, writing and grammar 30, and literature from Kaveri 30. Writing tasks include a short notice, a formal letter or email, an article and an essay. The R1 and R2 papers differ in task types and passage styles.
Social Science
CBSE has not yet published the Class 9 Social Science question paper design for 2026-27; its curriculum says the course structure will be provided shortly. Internal assessment is 20 marks. Ask your school for its paper blueprint until CBSE issues one.
What this pattern means for you
Recall is only part of the paper: In Science, half the marks test application and higher-order thinking, so practise case-based and reasoning questions, not just definitions.
Each internal mark is worth chasing: Twenty internal marks are a fifth of your subject total and need a separate 33% to pass.
Time per mark is tight: A 3-hour, 80-mark paper gives about 2 minutes 15 seconds per mark, so practise full papers against the clock.
Geometry and Algebra decide Mathematics: They carry 45 of 80 marks, so most practice time should go there.
Advanced Level and third language
Students who opt for Mathematics or Science at Advanced Level study extra content alongside the standard course. CBSE's curriculum lists the advanced paper as a 25-mark, one-hour examination of higher-order questions in the Class 10 board exam from 2027-28. A score of 50% or more is noted on the marksheet as cleared, and the marks are not added to the aggregate. During Class 9, the school decides how to assess advanced work.
The third language (R3) is assessed entirely by the school. Under CBSE Circular Acad-49/2026, a student who does not clear R3 in Class 9 is still promoted to Class 10 but must clear it there.
Grading scale
Class 9 uses absolute grading on marks out of 100.
Marks | Grade |
|---|---|
91 to 100 | A1 |
81 to 90 | A2 |
71 to 80 | B1 |
61 to 70 | B2 |
51 to 60 | C1 |
41 to 50 | C2 |
33 to 40 | D |
Time management and exam-day strategy
Read the paper first: Use the first 10 to 15 minutes to mark questions you can answer quickly.
Answer by confidence: Secure short and objective questions first, then move to long answers.
Show steps: In Mathematics and numerical Science questions, marks are given for method as well as the final answer.
Label diagrams neatly: Biology and physics diagrams earn easy marks when labels are clear.
Keep 15 minutes to review: Check units, signs and unanswered parts.
The official scheme is in the CBSE curriculum 2026-27.
