Homi Bhabha Exam Class 6 Eligibility 2026-27: Who Can Apply
The Homi Bhabha exam Class 6 eligibility rules are short, but they are strict. The Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition is conducted by the Greater Bombay Science Teachers' Association (GBSTA). It is open to students currently studying in Std 6 from any board, in English or Marathi medium. What trips families up is usually not the class rule but the registration rules: who can register a student, which medium is chosen and what cannot be changed later.
This page covers the eligibility criteria for the 2026-27 cycle: class and board, medium, registration routes, age, centres for students outside Maharashtra, fees, documents and who is not eligible. It also explains the eligibility to move from one stage to the next. Registration for 2026-27 closed on 18 August 2026, so use this guide to check your details or plan for the next cycle.

Class and Board: Who Can Take the Homi Bhabha Exam in Class 6?
The junior competition is only for students who are studying in Std 6 in the year of the competition. A student in Std 5 or Std 7 cannot take the Std 6 paper. Std 9 students take a separate senior competition with its own paper and practical.
Board does not matter. GBSTA accepts students from the Maharashtra State Board, CBSE, ICSE, IB and other state boards. All Std 6 students take the same paper, which is mainly based on Maharashtra State Board science content along with related CBSE, ICSE and IB content.
What This Means for CBSE, ICSE and IB Students
You are fully eligible: There is no separate quota or paper by board, and no extra condition for central or international boards.
Expect some unfamiliar topics: Because the paper leans on Maharashtra State Board books, some chapters may be new to you. The Homi Bhabha Class 6 syllabus guide maps these topics for CBSE students.
Your ranking group is separate: For selection to the practical round, English medium students of boards other than the Maharashtra State Board are ranked in their own group within each region.
Medium of the Exam
The competition is conducted only in English and Marathi. Students in semi-English schools must choose one of the two at registration.
Choose carefully, because the medium stays fixed for every stage. The written test, the practical, the general interview and the project interview are all taken in the medium chosen at registration. GBSTA does not allow any change of medium later, and the official handbook that comes with the fee cannot be exchanged for the other medium.
A simple way to decide is to pick the language in which your child studies science at school. Students who learn science in English but are more comfortable speaking Marathi should think about the interviews too, since those are spoken rounds.
Registration Routes and Rules
Eligibility also depends on how a student is registered. GBSTA allows two routes and bans a third.
Route | Allowed? | Window (2026-27) | Fee per student |
|---|---|---|---|
Through school (regular) | Yes | 1 to 31 July 2026, extended to 10 August 2026 without late fee | Rs. 520 English, Rs. 420 Marathi |
Through school (late) | Yes | Up to 18 August 2026 | Additional Rs. 25 |
Individual registration | Yes | 1 July to 18 August 2026 | Rs. 700 (no late fee) |
Through a coaching class or academy | No | - | - |
The fee includes a copy of GBSTA's authentic book and is non-refundable. All registration happens online on the GBSTA registration portal.
Rules That Can Cost a Student the Competition
No coaching-class registration: Registering through a private class or academy is strictly prohibited, and GBSTA's terms say a violation leads to disqualification.
Mobile number is locked: The mobile number given at registration cannot be changed afterwards. It is also used to log in for hall tickets and results, so use a number the family will keep.
Edits close early: For 2026-27, the edit option for student details was open only until 18 August 2026. Check spelling, date of birth and medium before that date.
No spot entries: A student who is not registered cannot appear at any centre on exam day.
No replacements: If a registered student does not appear, another student cannot take that place.
Individual Registration: Extra Requirements
Students whose school is not registering can apply individually. The parent verifies a mobile number with an OTP, fills in the student's details and uploads two files: a passport-size photograph and a bonafide certificate from the student's school. The registration stays incomplete until both are uploaded.
The bonafide certificate is how GBSTA confirms the student is studying in Std 6. Ask the school office for it early, as some schools take a few days to issue one.
Is There an Age Limit for the Homi Bhabha Class 6 Exam?
GBSTA's official information does not set a minimum or maximum age. Eligibility depends on the class the student is studying in, not on age. A student's date of birth is collected at registration, but there is no published age window or cut-off date.
If your child is studying in Std 6 this year, they are eligible regardless of whether they are younger or older than classmates.
Students From Outside Maharashtra
Students from any state in India can take part. GBSTA groups them under a separate region called "Other than Maharashtra", and results for this group are worked out separately from the Maharashtra regions.
Centre in your own school: If a school outside Maharashtra registers at least 50 students, the exam centre is set up in that school's premises.
Centre in Maharashtra: If fewer students register, the exam centre is in Maharashtra, chosen from three preferences given at registration. Families should plan travel for the written test and any later rounds.
Regions for Maharashtra Students
Selection to the practical round is done region-wise, so your region decides who you compete with for a place.

Mumbai | Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban |
Thane | Thane, Palghar, Raigad |

Eligibility to Move From One Stage to the Next
Registering makes a student eligible for the written test. Each later stage has its own qualifying rule.
Stage | Who is eligible |
|---|---|
Phase I: Written test (28 November 2026) | Every registered Std 6 student with a hall ticket |
Phase II: Practical test (10 January 2027) | Top 7.5% of students per region, ranked separately for Marathi medium, English medium (Maharashtra State Board) and English medium (other boards) |
Phases III and IV: Interviews (14 March 2027) | Top 10% on the combined score of 30% of Phase I marks plus Phase II marks |
Medals | Every student who reaches the interview stage |
Students who do not reach the practical but score above 35 marks receive a passing certificate, as per the 2026-27 circular. Phase II qualifiers receive a merit certificate. For the marks and duration of each stage, see the Homi Bhabha Class 6 exam pattern.
Eligibility Checklist for Parents Before Registering
Registration usually opens in July each year. Run through this checklist before the school or you submit the form, because most details cannot be fixed later.
Confirm the class: The student must be in Std 6 in the year of the competition, not the year the family plans to start preparing.
Decide the medium: Pick English or Marathi based on the language of science lessons at school and comfort in speaking during interviews.
Ask the school first: School registration costs less than individual registration. If the school is not registering, arrange the bonafide certificate for individual registration.
Use a permanent mobile number: It cannot be changed and is needed for hall tickets and results.
Check every field: Verify the name, date of birth and medium before the edit option closes.
Students outside Maharashtra: Find out whether the school will reach 50 registrations. If not, choose three Maharashtra centres you can travel to.
A student who takes the Std 6 competition can enter the senior competition again in Std 9, so an early start also builds experience for the later attempt.
Who Is Not Eligible?
Students in other classes: Std 5, Std 7 and Std 8 students cannot take the Std 6 competition. Std 9 students take the senior competition.
Students registered through a coaching class: These registrations are not accepted and can lead to disqualification.
Late applicants: Once the window closes (18 August 2026 for this cycle), no new registrations or spot entries are accepted.
Students wanting a Hindi or other medium paper: Only English and Marathi papers are offered.
Incomplete individual registrations: If the photograph or bonafide certificate is not uploaded, the registration is not complete.
Older pages sometimes describe the competition as open to Classes 6 to 9 or list a fee of about Rs. 300. GBSTA runs it only for Std 6 and Std 9, and the 2026-27 fees are those shown above. Always confirm details on the official Homi Bhabha exams page on msta.in.
