MP Board 12th Exam Pattern 2027: Marks, Question Types and Marking Scheme

The MP Board 12th exam pattern for 2027 is set by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) for the 2026-27 session. Every subject is worth 100 marks, split between a 3-hour theory paper and a practical, project or internal assessment component. Theory exams run from 17 February to 19 March 2027, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon.

For 2026-27 the board revised its question format to include more concept and application questions and uploaded subject-wise marking schemes to the Academics section of its website. This page explains the marks split, the question types you will meet, how passing works, and how to use the three hours well.

Question Types in the Theory Paper

Question type

Format

What it tests

Objective

Multiple choice, fill in the blanks, true or false, match the column, one-word or one-sentence answers

Recall of definitions, formulas, facts

Very short answer

About 30 words, usually 2 marks

Precise definitions, short reasons

Short answer

About 75 words, usually 3 marks

Explanations, short derivations, small numericals

Long answer

About 120 to 150 words, usually 4 or 5 marks

Derivations, diagrams, detailed numericals, essays

The objective section opens the paper and is compulsory. Most subjective questions carry an internal choice (an "or" question). The exact number of questions and marks per question vary by subject and are set in the 2026-27 marking scheme. For Class 12 non-practical subjects, recent reports describe an 80-mark paper with 10 very short, 4 short and 4 long answer questions alongside the objective section.

Key Changes to Know

  • More application questions: from 2026-27 the board is moving towards reasoning-based questions, so rote answers alone will not secure full marks.

  • Fresh marking schemes: subject-wise schemes for 2026-27 are in the Academics section of the MPBSE website.

  • Older pages: some sites still show earlier question tables whose marks do not add up. Follow the official 2026-27 scheme.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

There is no negative marking. A wrong objective answer simply scores zero, so attempt every objective question. In subjective answers, examiners award step marks for correct working, formulas and labelled diagrams, so write the method even if you are unsure of the final answer.

What This Pattern Means for You

  • Objective marks are the easiest to secure: one or two days of revising definitions and formulas per subject can lift your score quickly.

  • Long answers decide the top grades: practise derivations, diagrams and structured answers under time.

  • Practicals are a separate pass: in 70 plus 30 subjects you need about 10 out of 30 in practical as well as 23 out of 70 in theory.

  • No penalty for guessing: never leave an objective question blank.

Practical Exams

Main-session practicals are reported to run from 1 February to 19 March 2027 at schools, under board guidelines. Expect an experiment or practical task, your practical record, and a viva. Projects and internal assessment for non-practical subjects are completed in school during the session.

How Results Are Calculated

Your subject score is theory plus practical or internal marks, out of 100. Results are issued with divisions; 60% and above is reported as First Division, 45% and above as Second, and 33% and above as Third. For example, 58 out of 70 in Physics theory and 28 out of 30 in practical gives 86 out of 100.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

  1. Use the reading time: plan which "or" options you will attempt before writing.

  2. Objective section first: finish it in about 20 to 25 minutes.

  3. Budget by marks: roughly 2 minutes per mark leaves 15 minutes to review.

  4. Present answers clearly: headings, underlined key terms, labelled diagrams and units.

Subject marking schemes are in the Academics section of the MPBSE website.
