RSMSSB Exam Pattern 2026: CET and Main Exam Guide

The RSMSSB exam pattern works in two layers. The Rajasthan Subordinate and Ministerial Services Selection Board, which now operates as the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board (RSSB), first conducts the Common Eligibility Test (CET). Clearing the CET only makes you eligible. Your actual selection depends on a separate main exam for each post, such as Patwari, Clerk Grade-II or Village Development Officer.

This page explains both layers for the 2026 cycle. It covers the CET Graduate Level and Senior Secondary Level patterns, the marking scheme with its negative marking and option E rule, and the main exam pattern for popular posts. It also shows how to plan your time around these rules. Several details changed recently, including the 12th-level CET structure and the score validity, so older pages may show outdated figures.

How the RSMSSB Selection Route Works

Most Group C recruitments of the board now follow the same route. Knowing it helps you understand why two different patterns matter.

  1. One Time Registration (OTR): You register once on the Rajasthan SSO portal and pay the OTR fee. Your category, disability status and home state are fixed here and carried into every application.

  2. Common Eligibility Test: You take the CET at the Graduate Level, the Senior Secondary Level or both, depending on the posts you want.

  3. Qualify with the minimum score: You need at least 40 percent marks to apply for the main exams. SC and ST candidates get up to 5 percent relaxation.

  4. Post-wise main exam: When the board advertises a post covered by the CET, only qualified candidates can apply. Selection is made on the main exam merit, category-wise.

  5. Skill test and document verification: Posts such as Clerk Grade-II add a typing test. Every post ends with document verification.

Key Changes to Know

  • Board name and website: The board now publishes notices as RSSB on rssb.rajasthan.gov.in. Older pages still use the RSMSSB name and the old address.

  • Three-year score validity: A CET score now stays valid for three years from the result date, under a Personnel Department notification of 16 January 2025. Earlier scores were valid for one year.

  • 2024 scores have lapsed: The Graduate Level 2024 score expired on 11 February 2026 and the Senior Secondary Level 2024 score expired on 16 February 2026. Candidates from those cycles had to apply again for CET 2026.

  • Smaller 12th-level paper: The Senior Secondary Level CET 2026 has 120 questions for 240 marks, not 150 questions for 300 marks.

  • Negative marking at both levels: One-third of the marks of a question is deducted for each wrong answer.

CET Graduate Level Exam Pattern 2026

The CET Graduate Level 2026 was notified under Advertisement No. 09/2026. The notification first fixed the exam for 1 to 3 December 2026, but the board's revised calendar of September 2026 moved it to 16 to 18 January 2027 because of local body and Panchayati Raj elections. It is a single offline OMR paper covering general studies, reasoning, mathematics, computers and two languages.

Marking Scheme, Negative Marking and the Option E Rule

Every question in both CET papers carries 2 marks. A wrong answer costs one-third of that, so you lose about 0.67 marks for each wrong answer.

Each question has five options. Options A to D are answers, and option E means "not attempted". The board applies these rules to all its objective exams:

  • Darken option E if you skip a question: A skipped question with option E filled gets zero marks and no penalty.

  • Do not leave a question completely blank: If none of the five circles is darkened, one-third of the marks of that question is deducted, the same as a wrong answer. This applies up to 10 percent of the questions.

  • More than 10 percent blank means disqualification: If you leave more than 10 percent of the questions without any circle darkened, you are disqualified. That is more than 15 questions in the Graduate Level paper and more than 12 in the Senior Secondary Level paper.

  • Extra 10 minutes: The board gives 10 minutes after the exam time to fill option E for unattempted questions.

This rule has real consequences. In the Clerk Grade-II and Junior Assistant 2026 written exam, the board disqualified more than 1,100 candidates for not darkening any option in over 10 percent of the questions.

A Worked Example

Suppose a Graduate Level candidate answers 120 questions, gets 90 right and 30 wrong, and fills option E for the other 30.

  • Marks for correct answers: 90 x 2 = 180

  • Deduction for wrong answers: 30 x 0.67 = 20

  • Final score: 160 out of 300, which is about 53 percent and above the 40 percent qualifying mark

If the same candidate had left 10 of those 30 questions totally blank instead of filling E, about 6.7 more marks would be deducted. Leaving 16 or more blank would mean disqualification.

What the CET Pattern Means for You

  • Qualifying is the easy part: 40 percent is 120 marks in the Graduate Level paper and 96 in the Senior Secondary Level paper. Clearing it is necessary but not enough, because only qualified candidates move on to the real competition in the main exam.

  • Your best score counts: There is no limit on attempts, and the best valid score before a recruitment is used. A higher CET score does not decide selection by itself, but it keeps you eligible for three years.

  • Guessing has a cost: With three wrong answers cancelling about one right answer, guess only when you can rule out at least two options.

  • Rajasthan knowledge carries weight: A large part of the paper covers the history, geography, polity, economy and culture of Rajasthan, and the same areas return in most main exams.

Each post notification sets its own main exam pattern. The two recruitments below are recent examples of how the board structures them.

Patwari (Graduate Level CET posts)

The Patwari 2025 written exam had 150 objective questions for 300 marks in 3 hours, with one-third negative marking. Only candidates qualified in the CET Graduate Level 2024 could apply. The next Patwari recruitment will need a valid CET Graduate Level score.

Clerk Grade-II and Junior Assistant (Senior Secondary Level CET posts)

The 2026 recruitment (Advertisement No. 04/2026, 10,644 posts) used a two-paper written exam followed by a typing test.

Paper II

About three times the number of vacancies, category-wise, were shortlisted from the written result for Phase II. That phase is a typing test in Hindi and English, each with a speed test and an efficiency test of 10 minutes and 25 marks. Check the post notification for the minimum marks needed in each component.

Posts such as Village Development Officer, Forest Guard, Supervisor and Junior Accountant follow the same route: CET first, then a post-wise exam. Some add a physical test or a skill test. Read the latest post notification for the exact paper, because patterns are revised between cycles.

How Final Merit Is Decided

The CET score is used only for eligibility. Final merit for a post is prepared on the main exam, and on any further stage that the post's service rules count, separately for each category.

  • Normalisation: When an exam runs in several shifts, the board normalises scores so that candidates in easier and harder shifts are compared fairly.

  • Deleted questions: If a question is deleted after the answer key review, the board rescales marks over the remaining valid questions.

  • Area-wise lists: Many recruitments publish separate merit lists and cut-offs for Scheduled Area (TSP) and Non-Scheduled Area posts.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

  • Do two rounds: Answer the questions you are sure of first, then return to the doubtful ones. This keeps your accuracy high under negative marking.

  • Bubble as you go: Fill each circle immediately and use the extra 10 minutes only to darken option E for the questions you skipped.

  • Keep languages short: Hindi and English questions are usually quick. Finishing them early saves time for mathematics and reasoning.

  • Practise on OMR sheets: Timed practice on a five-option OMR format builds the habit of never leaving a question blank.

Older pages may still show the 12th-level CET as a 150-question paper without negative marking, or a one-year score validity. Follow the official notices on the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board website, and download admit cards from the Rajasthan Recruitment Portal.
