UIIC Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: Marks, Time and Marking

The UIIC Assistant exam pattern is a single online objective test of 200 questions and 250 marks, to be finished in 120 minutes, followed by a Regional Language Test for shortlisted candidates. The pattern below comes from the last Assistant recruitment of United India Insurance Company Limited (advertisement dated 14 December 2023) and its official information handout.

No newer Assistant notification was listed on the UIIC recruitment page at the time of writing. The structure has been consistent in the official documents, but UIIC states that it reserves the right to modify the exam structure, so confirm the pattern in the new notification before you plan your final months.

Online exam pattern

The online exam has five tests of 40 questions and 50 marks each. All five run inside one composite 120-minute window, so you can move between tests and spend your time as you choose.

Every question is multiple choice with five options, and only one is correct. Several sample questions in the official handout use "Other than those given as options" as the fifth choice. Candidates are advised to expect about three hours at the venue for login, verification and instructions, though the test itself lasts 120 minutes.

If the exam runs in more than one session, UIIC equates the scores across sessions to adjust for small differences in difficulty.

Marking scheme and negative marking

Each question carries equal marks, which works out to 1.25 marks per question (50 marks across 40 questions). For every wrong answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question is deducted. That is a penalty of 0.3125 marks per wrong answer, calculated from the official rule. There is no penalty for unanswered questions.

An answer counts only when you click "Save & Next" or "Mark for Review & Next". A question marked for review with an answer saved is still evaluated.

What the pattern means for you

  • Average time is about 36 seconds a question: 120 minutes across 200 questions leaves little room for long calculations or very slow passages.

  • Marks are equal across tests: a computer or general awareness question is worth the same as a reasoning question, so quick, sure marks matter.

  • A wrong guess costs more than 0.3 marks: guess only when you can eliminate at least two options, and use the "Other than those given as options" choice carefully.

  • Every test needs a floor: the previous cycle applied a minimum of 5 marks in each test, so an unattempted test can end your chances even with a strong total.

Regional Language Test and later stages

Candidates who qualify in the online exam are shortlisted state-wise for the Regional Language Test. It checks the ability to read, write and speak the language of the state you applied for. Original documents for category, age and qualification are verified at this stage, and application data cannot be changed after registration. Final selection also depends on medical fitness.

How final merit is decided

UIIC prepares the final merit list state-wise and category-wise in descending order of online exam marks, subject to qualifying the Regional Language Test. The score is the corrected score after the penalty for wrong answers. For example, if you answer 30 questions in one test, get 28 right and 2 wrong, your corrected score for that test is 28 x 1.25 - 2 x 0.3125 = 34.375 marks. This is an illustration based on the official rule, not a real result.

A contingency list may also be drawn up if selected candidates do not accept the offer.
