Teaching Exams

UP TGT

UP TGT is a recruitment exam for the recruitment of Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT), relevant to aspirants preparing for teaching and education-sector recruitment.

UP TGT Study Material

UP TGT is the recruitment exam for Trained Graduate Teachers in government-aided secondary schools of Uttar Pradesh. It is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), which took over this work from the former Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Service Selection Board (UPSESSB). Selected candidates teach Classes 6 to 10 in one subject, such as Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science or Sanskrit.

The last cycle (Advt. No. 01/2022, 3,539 posts) finally reached its written exam on 3 and 4 June 2026, and results followed in July 2026. In August 2026 the commission also released a revised syllabus and a new exam pattern with negative marking for future TGT recruitment. This page explains both: what happened in the last cycle, and what the next UP TGT exam is likely to look like.

Latest Updates and Notification Status

Here is where UP TGT stands as of October 2026. Each point is tied to a cycle so you do not mix old and new rules.

  • 2022 cycle completed in stages: The written exam for Advt. No. 01/2022 was held on 3 and 4 June 2026. The final result for most subjects was released on 28 July 2026, and institution allotment for 13 subjects followed in September 2026.

  • English result held back: Reports of the final result notice say the result for the 557 TGT English posts was not declared because of a petition pending in the High Court. Hindi and Sanskrit selections were also reported as pending in the later revised list.

  • Revised syllabus and pattern: In early August 2026, UPESSC released revised TGT and PGT syllabi. The new TGT paper is reported to have 120 questions (90 subject plus 30 General Studies) for 360 marks, with negative marking introduced for the first time.

  • Other 2026 advertisements: In September 2026 the commission issued Advt. No. 05/2026 (Assistant Teacher, primary) and Advt. No. 06/2026 (PGT, 2,607 posts). A fresh TGT advertisement had not been published at the time of writing.

Many websites quote very large figures for "upcoming" TGT vacancies. None of these are confirmed by an official advertisement, so treat them as speculation until UPESSC publishes the TGT notification.

UP TGT Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility is subject-specific. A B.Ed alone is not enough; your graduation subjects must match the subject you apply for. The full rules are on our UP TGT eligibility criteria page.

Educational Qualification

  • Core rule: Graduation with the subject combination prescribed for the post, plus B.Ed or an equivalent teacher-training degree.

  • Examples from the 2022 advertisement: Science needs B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry; Mathematics needs graduation with Mathematics; Social Science needs graduation with two of History, Geography, Political Science and Economics.

  • Special subjects: Physical Education, Art and Music have their own diploma or certificate requirements in addition to graduation.

  • Preferential qualifications: M.Ed, Ph.D or representation of the state in a national sports event were listed as preferential, not compulsory.

Age Limit

Rule (Advt. No. 01/2022)

Details

Minimum age

21 years as on 1 July 2022

Maximum age

Not more than 60 years as on 1 July 2022

Category relaxation

Not separately specified, since the upper limit was linked to the retirement age

The age reference date and upper limit for the next cycle will be set in the new TGT advertisement. For comparison, the 2026 PGT advertisement uses 1 July 2026 as its reference date.

Other Conditions

Reservation benefits are given only to candidates who are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh and hold valid certificates. Women, ex-servicemen and dependants of freedom fighters follow the rules stated in the advertisement.

Application Fee and How to Apply

Applications are made online on the portal linked from the official website. The 2022 cycle charged the following, including a Rs. 50 processing fee.

Category

Total fee (Advt. No. 01/2022)

General and OBC

Rs. 750

EWS and SC

Rs. 450

ST

Rs. 250

Persons with disabilities

Half the fee of their original category

Fees are revised with new advertisements. The 2026 PGT advertisement charges Rs. 1,500 for General, OBC and EWS, Rs. 750 for SC and ST, and Rs. 500 for PwBD candidates, so expect the next TGT fee to be confirmed in its own notification.

Steps to Apply

  1. Register: Open the application link on the official website and create your registration with a working mobile number and email.

  2. Pay the fee: Pay online through net banking, debit card or credit card within the fee deadline.

  3. Fill the form: Enter academic details exactly as printed on your mark sheets and choose your subject carefully.

  4. Upload documents: Upload your photograph and signature in the size and format the notice asks for.

  5. Submit and save: Review every field, submit, and keep a printout of the final form.

Common reasons for rejection include a subject combination that does not match the post, missing B.Ed results by the cut-off date, and category details that differ from certificates.

UP TGT Exam Pattern

The written test is the only stage that decides merit, so the pattern matters more than anything else. Two versions exist, and older pages often still show the first one.

Revised Pattern (announced August 2026)

General Studies

30

Each question carries 3 marks. Reports of the new pattern say one mark (one-third of a question's marks) will be deducted for each wrong answer, the same rule printed in the 2026 PGT advertisement. Confirm the exact deduction in the next TGT advertisement.

Pattern Used in the 2022 Cycle

The June 2026 exam under Advt. No. 01/2022 followed the old scheme: 125 subject questions, 4 marks each, 500 marks, 2 hours and no negative marking.

What This Means for You

  • General Studies is now 25% of the paper: You can no longer prepare only your subject. Current affairs and UP-focused GK need a daily slot.

  • Guessing has a cost: A blind guess on a four-option question no longer comes free. Attempt questions where you can rule out at least one option.

  • Time is tight: 120 questions in 120 minutes leaves about one minute per question, so speed practice matters.

For the full breakdown and a time plan, read the UP TGT exam pattern guide.

UP TGT Syllabus Summary

The syllabus has two parts: the subject you apply for, at graduation level, and a General Studies section added in 2026.

Part

Important topics

General Studies

Current affairs, Indian history and geography, Indian Constitution and economy, environment, ICT, teaching aptitude, Uttar Pradesh GK (as reported)

Hindi

History of Hindi literature, prose forms, poetics (ras, chhand, alankar), grammar, Sanskrit basics

English

Comprehension, grammar and usage, vocabulary, literary forms and major English authors

Mathematics

Algebra, set theory, real analysis, trigonometry, complex numbers, statistics, probability, commercial maths

Science

Graduation-level Physics and Chemistry with general biology

Social Science

History, geography, political science and economics

Other subjects

Sanskrit, Urdu, Home Science, Art, Commerce, Agriculture, Physical Education, Music (Vocal and Instrumental) each have their own syllabus

UPESSC publishes subject-wise syllabus PDFs, but a detailed topic list for General Studies had not been widely published when the pattern was announced. Use the official PDF for your subject as your checklist. Our UP TGT syllabus page breaks each subject into a study order.

Selection Process

  1. Written examination: An objective, OMR-based paper. Your marks here decide your rank in the subject-wise merit list.

  2. Document verification: Shortlisted candidates (about one and a half times the posts in the 2022 cycle) present original certificates. Candidates who missed both the scheduled and rescheduled dates had their candidature cancelled.

  3. Final merit list and allotment: The final list is prepared subject-wise and category-wise, separately for boys' and girls' institutions, and institutions are then allotted.

There is no interview for the TGT post. The 40-mark interview in the new scheme applies only to PGT.

UP TGT Salary and Career Growth

Component

Details

Pay level

Level 7 (earlier grade pay Rs. 4,600)

Pay scale

Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400

Allowances

Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and others as per UP government rules

The pay level and scale come from the 2022 advertisement. In-hand salary depends on the current DA rate and the city of posting, so any monthly figure you see online is an estimate, not an official number. With experience and higher qualifications, TGTs can move towards lecturer (PGT) and head-of-institution posts through the routes set in the service rules.

How to Prepare for UP TGT

Because one paper decides selection, preparation should balance subject depth with the new General Studies section and accuracy under negative marking.

Subject Preparation

  • Start from the official syllabus: Print your subject's syllabus and tick each unit as you study, practise and revise it.

  • Use graduation-level books: Questions go beyond school level, so revise your B.A., B.Sc or B.Com subjects properly.

  • Solve previous papers early: Papers from past cycles show which units repeat and how deep questions go.

General Studies Preparation

  • Daily current affairs: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day and make short monthly notes.

  • Uttar Pradesh focus: Revise UP geography, schemes, culture and administration alongside national GK.

  • Teaching aptitude and ICT: Cover basic concepts; these are short topics that can add easy marks.

Practise With Mock Tests

Begin full-length tests six to eight weeks before the exam and analyse each one for wrong answers, slow questions and questions you skipped but could have solved. UPESSC does not publish official mock tests for UP TGT, so use the syllabus and question papers on the official website as your reference. For timed practice, you can attempt UP TGT mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see whether General Studies or your subject is costing you marks. Pair them with UP TGT study notes on Testkart for quick revision of high-frequency topics.

UP TGT Cut-Off Reference

The 2022 cycle cut-offs were released with the final result on 28 July 2026, subject-wise and category-wise, out of 500. Selected figures for boys' institutions, as reported from the result notices, are below.

Treat them as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin. Notices, results and syllabus PDFs are published on the UPESSC official website.
