UP TGT Exam Pattern 2026: Marking Scheme, Negative Marking and Selection

The UP TGT exam pattern is changing. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) conducted the June 2026 exam for Advt. No. 01/2022 on the old scheme of 125 subject questions with no negative marking. In August 2026, along with a revised syllabus, it announced a new TGT pattern of 120 questions for 360 marks, with a General Studies section and negative marking.

This page explains the revised pattern you should prepare for, compares it with the old one, and turns the numbers into decisions: how much each question is worth, what a wrong guess costs, and how to split your two hours. Where a detail has only been reported and not yet printed in a TGT advertisement, it is marked so you know to confirm it.

Key Features

  • Mode: Offline, with answers marked on an OMR sheet.

  • Duration: 2 hours (120 minutes) for the whole paper, as reported. There is no separate timer for each section.

  • Question type: Multiple-choice questions with four options.

  • Subject level: Graduation level in the subject you applied for, such as Hindi, Mathematics or Science.

  • Language: Language subjects are set in that language; other papers have usually been bilingual in Hindi and English. Confirm in the advertisement.

  • Negative marking: Introduced in the revised pattern. See the marking section below for the reported deduction.

The revised TGT pattern mirrors the structure printed in the 2026 PGT advertisement (Advt. No. 06/2026), which has the same 120 questions, 30 General Studies plus 90 subject, and 360 written marks. The difference is that PGT adds a 40-mark interview, while TGT does not.

Old Pattern vs Revised Pattern

Many candidates who wrote the June 2026 exam will appear again. The table shows what has changed.

Two changes matter most. First, General Studies now carries a quarter of the marks, so subject-only preparation is no longer enough. Second, negative marking means attempting all questions is no longer automatically the right strategy.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Each correct answer earns 3 marks. Reports of the revised pattern say 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer, which is one-third of a question's marks. This is the same rule printed in the 2026 PGT advertisement, where marking more than one option is also treated as wrong. Until a TGT advertisement prints the rule, treat the exact deduction as reported, not final.

Worked Example

Here is how the same candidate's score changes with different attempt strategies, using the reported 3 and 1 rule.

Approach

Careful

264 - 12 = 252

Aggressive

93

19

279 - 19 = 260

Attempt everything

120

95

25

285 - 25 = 260

The aggressive candidate gained 8 marks over the careful one by attempting 12 more questions with reasonable accuracy. Attempting the last 8 blind added nothing. Extra attempts help only when you can eliminate options.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Each question is worth 3 marks: One correct answer outweighs two wrong guesses, so informed attempts pay off.

  • A blind guess is close to break-even: With four options and a one-third penalty, random guessing gains nothing over many questions. If you can rule out one option, the odds move in your favour.

  • General Studies is 90 marks: That is more than the gap between many category cut-offs in past results. It cannot be skipped.

  • One minute per question: 120 questions in 120 minutes leaves no slack. Subject questions with calculations need time saved elsewhere.

  • Old cut-offs will not translate: Past cut-offs were out of 500 with no penalty. Do not convert them directly to the 360-mark scale.

How Different Subjects Experience the Pattern

All candidates write the same 30 General Studies questions, but the 90 subject questions feel very different from one subject to another. Plan your time around your own paper.

Subject type

Nature of subject questions

Time pressure

Main risk under negative marking

Mathematics, Science, Commerce

Numericals mixed with concepts

High

Rushed calculations leading to wrong options

Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu

Grammar, literature facts, authors and works

Medium

Confusing similar authors, works or periods

Social Science, Home Science, Agriculture

Mostly factual and conceptual

Low to medium

Guessing on dates, terms and definitions

Art, Music, Physical Education

Theory, history and technical terms

Low

Small syllabus but very high cut-offs, so every error counts

Practical Adjustments

  • Calculation-heavy subjects: Finish General Studies quickly, ideally within 20 minutes, to protect time for numericals.

  • Language subjects: Use a fixed order such as grammar first, then literature, so you do not lose time switching between styles.

  • Factual subjects: You will usually have spare time. Use it for a careful second round rather than extra guesses.

  • Small-cadre subjects: In the 2022 cycle, cut-offs in subjects like Music, Art and Commerce were above 460 out of 500 for unreserved boys' posts. Accuracy is what separates candidates there.

Selection Stages After the Written Exam

Document Verification

After the written result, candidates are shortlisted subject-wise and category-wise for document verification. In the 2022 cycle, about one and a half times the number of posts were called. You present originals of your degree, B.Ed, category, domicile and identity documents, and any special qualification you claimed.

Candidates who did not appear on both the scheduled and the rescheduled verification dates in the 2022 cycle had their candidature cancelled, so treat the date as final.

No Interview for TGT

The TGT post has no interview. The 40-mark interview in UPESSC's new scheme applies only to PGT recruitment.

How the Final Merit List Is Prepared

The final selection list is prepared from written exam marks, separately for each subject, each category, and for boys' and girls' institutions.

  1. Written score: Your marks out of the paper total decide your position.

  2. Subject and category lists: You compete only with candidates in the same subject, category and institution type.

  3. Document check: Only candidates who clear verification stay on the list.

  4. Institution allotment: Selected candidates are allotted schools as per the commission's process.

Some cut-offs in the 2022 cycle were not round numbers, such as 362.88 in Science. Published results suggest a weightage was applied for certain candidate groups, so read the notes in the official result notice for your subject.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

A two-round approach works well for a 120-question paper with negative marking.

Phase

Time

What to do

General Studies

20 to 25 minutes

Answer what you know at once; mark doubtful questions

Subject, first round

65 to 70 minutes

Attempt every question you can solve with confidence

Second round

20 minutes

Return to marked questions where you can eliminate options

OMR check

5 minutes

Confirm bubbles match your question numbers

  • Choose your order before the exam: Some candidates prefer to start with their subject; others clear General Studies first. Practise both in mocks and keep the one that gives the better score.

  • Fill the OMR as you go: Leaving all the bubbling to the end is risky.

  • Do not stall on a calculation: If a question takes more than two minutes, mark it and move on.

How to Practise for the Revised Pattern

Candidates who prepared for the old pattern need to retrain two habits: attempting every question, and ignoring General Studies. A phased approach helps.

  1. Phase 1, accuracy first: Solve topic-wise sets of 25 to 30 subject questions untimed. Aim for 85% accuracy before you add speed.

  2. Phase 2, General Studies sets: Take 30-question GS sets in 20 to 25 minutes, three times a week, and note which areas cost you marks.

  3. Phase 3, full-length papers: Sit full 120-question tests in one two-hour block, with OMR-style answering if possible.

  4. Phase 4, guess control: After each test, count wrong answers that were guesses. If guesses are costing more than they earn, raise the bar for attempting.

Track three numbers after every full test: net score, accuracy percentage and the number of questions left blank. A rising net score with steady accuracy is the sign that your attempt strategy is working.

Exam-Day Rules for the OMR Paper

  • Use the prescribed pen: OMR papers usually require a black or blue ballpoint pen. Follow the instructions on your admit card.

  • No corrections: Whitener, erasers and overwriting can make a response invalid.

  • Check the booklet series: Fill the question booklet series and roll number correctly; mistakes here can stop your sheet from being evaluated.

  • Carry valid ID: Take your admit card and a valid photo identity card.

  • Keep your OMR copy if given: It helps you check your responses against the answer key.

Common Mistakes Seen on Older Pages

Many websites still show the 2022 cycle pattern without saying so. Older pages may still show 125 questions, 500 marks and no negative marking, so follow the revised official pattern.

  • "No negative marking": True for the June 2026 exam, but not for the revised pattern.

  • Reasoning, English and Maths sections for all: The TGT paper does not have separate aptitude sections for every candidate. The new General Studies section is a single block of 30 questions.

  • Interview for TGT: There is none. The interview applies to PGT only.

  • Old marks used for targets: Cut-offs out of 500 do not apply to a 360-mark paper.

Always confirm the final pattern in the next TGT advertisement on the UPESSC official website.
