UP TGT Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Subject-Wise Rules

UP TGT eligibility decides whether your application survives document verification, so it is worth checking before you spend months preparing. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) recruits Trained Graduate Teachers for government-aided secondary schools, and each subject has its own qualification rule. A B.Ed is compulsory, but your graduation subjects must also match the post.

The rules below come from the last TGT advertisement, Advt. No. 01/2022, whose exam was held in June 2026. A fresh TGT advertisement had not been released as of mid-October 2026, so age reference dates and any changed conditions will be confirmed only when it is published. This page explains each condition, shows the subject-wise degree requirements, and lists the mistakes that most often lead to rejection.

The table reflects the 2022 advertisement. Use it to plan, but confirm each line against the next TGT advertisement before applying.

Educational Qualification

UP TGT is a subject post. You apply for one subject, and your degree must show that subject, or the prescribed combination, as part of your graduation.

The Two Compulsory Parts

  • Graduation in the right subjects: A bachelor's degree from a recognised university with the subject or subjects listed for the post. For example, TGT Science needs B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry.

  • Teacher training: A B.Ed, or an equivalent training degree accepted under the rules (older qualifications such as LT and BT are named for some subjects).

Result and Cut-Off Date

The 2022 advertisement applied the qualifications in force up to the last date of application. As a safe rule, your degree and B.Ed should be complete by that date. If you are in the final year of B.Ed when a notification is released, read the advertisement closely, because rules on appearing candidates are stated there and not assumed.

Percentage Requirement

The 2022 advertisement did not set a general minimum percentage in graduation for TGT. Some third-party pages quote 50%, but that figure was not confirmed in the advertisement text we checked. Treat any percentage rule as valid only if the next advertisement prints it.

Subject-Wise Qualification for UP TGT

The table summarises the subject rules in the 2022 advertisement. B.Ed or the accepted training qualification is required in every row. Minor wording differs in the original, so use this as a guide and match your degree against the official text.

Art

Music (Vocal and Instrumental)

What This Means for You

  • Check year-wise subjects: Some candidates studied a subject in only one or two years of graduation. Reports say the commission has sought clarity from the Secondary Education Department on equivalent-degree questions, so keep your year-wise mark sheets ready.

  • Science and Biology are different posts: A B.Sc with Zoology, Botany and Chemistry fits Biology, not Science, unless Physics was also studied.

  • Social Science needs two subjects: A degree with only History will not qualify.

  • Skill subjects need extra certificates: Art, Music and Physical Education candidates must hold the specific diploma or certificate named in the advertisement, not just any course.

UP TGT Age Limit

UP TGT has a wide age window. Under Advt. No. 01/2022, the age conditions were measured on 1 July 2022.

Condition

Rule (Advt. No. 01/2022)

Minimum age

21 years as on 1 July 2022

Maximum age

Not more than 60 years as on 1 July 2022

Date of birth window

Born on or before 1 July 2001, and not more than 60 years old on 1 July 2022

Category-wise relaxation

No separate relaxation was listed in the advertisement

Some websites still show an upper limit of 35 or 40 years with category relaxation tables. That does not match the 2022 TGT advertisement, which linked the upper limit to 60 years. The next advertisement will set its own reference date. For comparison, the 2026 PGT advertisement (Advt. No. 06/2026) measures age on 1 July 2026, with a minimum of 21 years and an upper limit tied to the retirement age in the recruitment rules, reported as 62 years.

How to Calculate Your Age

  1. Find the reference date: Use the date printed in the advertisement, not the date you apply.

  2. Check the lower limit: You must have completed 21 years on or before that date.

  3. Check the upper limit: You must not have crossed the stated maximum on that date.

  4. Use your High School certificate: Your date of birth is taken from your Class 10 certificate, so make sure your application matches it exactly.

Nationality, Domicile and Reservation

  • Citizenship: Candidates should be citizens of India, as per the general rules for state government recruitment. Confirm any other categories in the advertisement.

  • Domicile for reservation: SC, ST, OBC and EWS reservation, and horizontal reservation for women, ex-servicemen and dependants of freedom fighters, are given only to candidates domiciled in Uttar Pradesh with valid certificates.

  • Candidates from other states: They can apply, but only as unreserved candidates.

  • Category certificates: Certificates must be in the format and validity period required by Uttar Pradesh government rules. OBC candidates should check non-creamy layer validity.

The category split comes from the 2022 advertisement as reported. A new advertisement will publish its own numbers.

Preferential Qualifications

The 2022 advertisement listed qualifications that are preferred but not compulsory:

  • M.Ed: A master's degree in education.

  • Ph.D: A doctorate, in line with the rules.

  • Sports representation: Representing the state in a national-level sports competition.

If you claim any of these, carry original proof to document verification. A claim without proof can be rejected.

Is TET Required for UP TGT?

The 2022 TGT advertisement did not list UPTET or CTET as a requirement for TGT posts in aided secondary schools. In 2026, news reports discussed TET becoming mandatory for primary-level teaching posts in aided secondary schools, which concerns PRT posts, not TGT. Treat any claim that TET is now required for UP TGT as unconfirmed until the next TGT advertisement says so.

Eligibility in Common Situations

Most doubts about UP TGT eligibility come from a few situations. The table gives the likely answer under the 2022 rules and what to check in the next advertisement.

Fits Science, and may also fit Mathematics

Whether the advertisement allows applying for more than one subject

B.A. with Hindi, English and History

Year-wise subject rule and the equivalence clarification

Candidate from another state

Can apply as unreserved

Domicile rules for reservation

Age 45 with B.Ed

Within the age window used in 2022

Upper limit and reference date in the new advertisement

D.El.Ed instead of B.Ed

Not listed as the TGT training qualification

Accepted training degrees for TGT

If your case is not covered here, read the subject's qualification text in the advertisement word by word. Where it is still unclear, the commission's helpline listed in the advertisement is the right place to ask, not a coaching forum.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • No B.Ed or equivalent: Graduation alone does not qualify for any TGT subject.

  • Mismatched subjects: For example, a B.Sc in Chemistry, Botany and Zoology for TGT Science.

  • Age outside the window: Under 21 or over the upper limit on the reference date.

  • Missing skill certificates: Art, Music or Physical Education candidates without the required diploma or certificate.

  • Incomplete qualification: Degree or training not completed by the date set in the advertisement.

  • Unverifiable claims: Category, domicile or preferential claims that cannot be supported by valid documents.
