The UPSC CSE syllabus is wide, so what you remember depends on how well you condense and revise it. Good UPSC study notes are short, linked to the syllabus and easy to revise in the last weeks. This page shows what to include, how to organise your notes and when to revise them for both the Prelims and the Mains.
What to Include in Your Notes
Area | What to note | Best format |
|---|---|---|
Polity and governance | Constitutional provisions, institutions, key amendments | Short points and comparison tables |
History and culture | Timelines, movements, personalities, art forms | Timelines |
Geography and environment | Concepts, maps, conventions, biodiversity terms | Labelled diagrams and lists |
Economy | Terms, budget concepts, schemes | Definitions with examples |
Ethics (GS IV) | Thinkers, key terms, case-study approaches | Framework notes |
CSAT | Formulas, shortcuts, common traps | One-page sheet |
Build your notes from the official syllabus on upsc.gov.in and standard textbooks, so that every note maps to a listed topic.
How to Organise Your Notes
Keep them short: Write in points, not paragraphs. If a note is longer than a page, it is a chapter, not a note.
Tag by paper: Mark each note for Prelims, Mains or both. Polity, economy and environment serve both stages.
Keep an error log: Record every question you get wrong in a test, with the correct answer and the reason.
Make monthly current affairs notes: Link each event to a syllabus topic, so it supports Mains answers as well.
Revision Schedule
Weekly: Revise the notes of the subjects you studied that week.
Monthly: Revisit current affairs and your error log.
Before the Prelims: Revise all core notes at least three times, starting early enough to leave the last week for tests.
Notes are only useful if you test your recall. After each revision round, take a topic-wise test and add every mistake to your log.
