Can Students Apply for IDBI Assistant Manager?

Not directly. A fresh graduate does not meet the experience condition. But that does not mean you should ignore this post. Think of it as your second step in banking, not your first.

Here is a realistic roadmap:

Step

What to do

Typical timeline

1

Complete graduation

Age 21–22

2

Get a permanent job in a public sector bank, private bank, cooperative bank or RRB (through exams like IBPS Clerk, IBPS PO, SBI Clerk, SBI PO or IBPS RRB)

Age 22–24

3

Complete at least two years of full-time service

Age 24–26

4

Apply for IDBI Assistant Manager before crossing the age limit

Until age 30 (more with relaxation)

The good news is that the IDBI Assistant Manager syllabus overlaps heavily with IBPS and SBI exams. The preparation you do today for your first bank job also builds the base for this exam.

Must hold a valid Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university or institute recognized by the Government of India or bodies like UGC / AICTE.

Diploma Acceptability

Ineligible

A standalone diploma course alone is not accepted as a valid educational qualification.

Computer Knowledge

Mandatory

Must possess operating/working knowledge of computers, verifiable through:

• Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in computer studies/IT, OR

• Having studied Computers/IT as a subject in school or college.

Work Experience: What Counts and What Does Not

You need at least two years of full-time work experience after graduation in a Scheduled Public Sector Bank, Scheduled Private Sector Bank, Cooperative Bank or Regional Rural Bank.

The advertisement is strict about what it will not count:

  • Contractual roles: Only permanent, full-time employment is considered.

  • Short stints: Experience of less than six months in any organisation is ignored.

  • Outsourced roles: Work through an outsourcing vendor, BPO/KPO, IT support provider or third-party payroll does not count, even if you worked inside a bank branch.

This matters for students choosing their first job. A sales role in a bank through a staffing agency may look like bank experience, but it will not qualify. Aim for a permanent position on the bank's own rolls.

Experience in branch banking, operations, retail assets, credit, sales and third-party products is preferred. Qualifications such as JAIIB, CAIIB, CA, CMA or CFA are listed as desirable.

Other Conditions

  • Credit history check: Applying counts as consent for the bank to check your credit history. Loan or credit card defaults, or adverse CIBIL reports, can stop you from being onboarded. Pay your education loan and card dues on time.

  • No Objection Certificate: If you work in a government body or public sector bank, you must produce an NOC at document verification.

No Negative Marking: What It Means for You

Some preparation websites mention a 0.25-mark penalty. The official advertisement clearly states that there will be no penalty for wrong answers. Always follow the official notice for your cycle.

  • Never leave a question blank. An educated guess can only add marks.

  • Save the last minute of each section for marking. Sections close separately, so fill in unattempted questions before time runs out.

  • Watch the General Awareness clock. You get 25 minutes for 60 questions, about 25 seconds each.

Syllabus at a Glance

The advertisement names only the sections. The topics below are what these sections usually cover in bank officer exams.

Interview and Final Selection

Shortlisted candidates go through document verification and a 100-mark personal interview. You can answer in Hindi or English. The minimum qualifying score is 50%, or 45% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates.

Final Score = 3/4 of Online Test Score + 1/4 of Interview Score

You must bring an original experience certificate in the bank's prescribed format, on your employer's letterhead and signed by HR. Without it, you may not be allowed into the interview. Selected candidates then take a Pre-Recruitment Medical Test.

IDBI Assistant Manager Salary

Salary is one of the biggest reasons students aim for this post. Here is what the official notification confirms and what depends on bank rules.

Basic Pay and Pay Scale

The starting basic pay is ₹48,480 per month in the pay scale of ₹48,480-2,000(7)-62,480-2,340(2)-67,160-2,680(7)-85,920, spread over 17 years.

In simple terms, the basic pay rises in three stages:

Stage

Increment

Basic pay moves from

To

Stage 1

₹2,000 × 7

₹48,480

₹62,480

Stage 2

₹2,340 × 2

₹62,480

₹67,160

Stage 3

₹2,680 × 7

₹67,160

₹85,920

Assuming one increment each year, basic pay would be about ₹58,480 after five years, ₹67,160 after nine years and ₹85,920 at the top of the scale. Promotions to higher grades come with their own pay scales.

Allowances and Benefits

The advertisement states that allowances, perquisites and reimbursements are paid as per the bank's rules at the time of joining. In bank officer roles, these typically include:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): A percentage of basic pay, revised periodically.

  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) or leased accommodation: Depends on the city of posting.

  • Medical and travel benefits: As per bank policy.

  • Pension: Appointees are covered under the IDBI Bank Ltd. New Pension Scheme (IBLNPS) Rules, 2011.

What About In-Hand Salary?

IDBI Bank does not publish an official gross or in-hand figure for this post. Estimates on preparation websites vary widely, because DA rates, city category and deductions change the final number. Use the official basic pay as your reliable anchor.

Also note: some websites quote ₹36,000 as the Assistant Manager's starting basic. The 2026-27 official advertisement for Assistant Manager (Grade 'A') states ₹48,480.

Probation, Posting and Career Growth

  • Probation: One year from the date of joining, usually confirmed from the following quarter.

  • Posting: Anywhere in India, with transfers possible outside India.

  • Growth: Grade 'A' is the entry officer grade. Officers move up through higher grades such as Manager, Assistant General Manager and beyond through internal promotions.

How Students Should Prepare

Since most students will first target IBPS, SBI or RRB exams, build a preparation plan that serves both goals.

Phase

Duration

Focus

Foundation

2–3 months

Basic concepts in quant, reasoning and grammar; daily newspaper reading

Practice

2–3 months

Topic-wise tests, sectional tests with timers, banking awareness notes

Mock phase

Ongoing

Full-length mocks, detailed analysis, revision of weak topics

Build strong basics in quant and reasoning. Puzzles and data interpretation carry the heaviest weight in the reasoning section. Practise them daily.

Read for English and GA together. A daily business newspaper improves reading speed for English and builds your banking and economy awareness at the same time.

Train for sectional timing. English gives you 40 questions in 20 minutes. Practise each section against its own clock.

Analyse every mock. Track where you lost time, not only where you went wrong. With no negative marking, attempting every question matters.

Plan your career path. Once you join a bank, consider JAIIB and CAIIB. They are listed as desirable qualifications and deepen your banking knowledge.

Practise with Testkart

Timed practice is what turns preparation into marks. Testkart's IDBI Assistant Manager mock tests follow the four-section pattern, so you can build section-wise speed. Strengthen weak areas with banking awareness practice tests

The IDBI Assistant Manager post rewards students who plan ahead. Start with a strong foundation, secure a permanent bank job, complete two years of service, and apply before the age limit. The preparation you begin today counts toward every step of that journey.
